Owner description: One of Kyoto's most famous attractions, this temple was originally built in 1397 as a residence for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. The structure was completely covered in gold leaf, earning it the name Golden Pavilion.

The building itself is just magical.. The golden two top levels just glitter. The water around it with small islands and trees set it off perfectly. The whole area was clean and well maintained by volunteers. Little paths weave around the immediate area with a waterfall and a shrine. This leads out to other buildings that are beautiful in the way Japanese buildings are in the old style. A serene place, but there are crowds, so be patient and take your time to get really good photos.

The temple is nice but I was disappointed by the garden not the one surrounding the pavillon but on the way out . It felt more like a tourist trap. Also full of tourist very pushy and very rude especially during Sakura/ cherry blossoms ! I am a tourist but I learned the Japanese way to be respectful and patient. Compared to Ginkakuji Temple called the silver palace that temple was more peaceful and the garden beautiful and less packed.

This place is beautiful, serene with a lovely green garden surrounding the main event, the golden temple. Even with the rain & bustling tourists it's worth the crowds to see it. A must in Kyoto.

A must, really easy to navigate within the grounds. Just pure beauty even on a bad weather day. Take pictures right at the entrance - it is the best view/angle.
The 4 stars is only because it’s hard to reach by public transport. We took the JR line to Emmachi then a taxi costing 1250 yen.

This Temple is absolutely stunning. Set on a small lake which has little islands with trees, small pagodas and beautiful plants. Painted Gold of coarse makes this a real eye pleaser. Also the grounds are very nicely landscaped which makes for a pleasurable walk and day out. A must see.
