“Clean and comfy”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2012

This hotel was booked for me by a tour company, it's what you'd expect from a hotel chosen by a tour company - clean and comfy but a tad dull.
I was upgraded to a twin (perhaps a double-double - the beds were quite big) in the South Wing, it was very spacious for a Japanese hotel room.
The hotel is across the road from the Shinkansen station, which contains some shops, a convenience store, and lots of casual restaurants. The hotel also has a really big vending machine room.
The metro station is a little further away, but that's not that helpful since the metro in Kyoto isn't very comprehensive. A taxi to Kiyomizu-deru is about 15yen.

Room Tip: I think the South Wing is newer.

The New Miyako Hotel has a superb staff with a good understanding of english. The location across the street from the JR Kyoto Station, and next door to a department store are part of the appeal of the hotel. Reasonable access to other parts of Kyoto, and others are within reach by metro or taxi. The room was clean and good size! As in most Japanese hotels internet is available via LAN connection. Breakfast offered both Japanese and western options. I will stay here again! During "cherry blossom season" they have a bulletin board showing the condition of cherry blossoms at various parts around Kyoto.

Room Tip: It might be better choose a room not facing the JR Station or one on a higher floor. Noise did not...

The hotel was in a fantastic location. 5 miniutes walk from the Shinkanshen station and 10 from the metro system. Being located opposite the Kyoto JR station meant that even if I didn't want to eat in the hotel I could just walk over to the station to look for food.

My friend and I took a western style room which was large and spacious for a Japanese hotel. It was really comfortable and relaxing after a long day out. Despite the common opinion that it doesn't matter cause you generally spend the whole day out touring I find that coming back to a cramped room is actually quite stressful. The convenience of the hotel and the size of the room made it quite plesant after a long day!

This was our 2nd stay at this hotel -- First we stayed at the South Wing (facing the garden) for the first trip and the high premier floor in the older building at this time. I prefer the design of the South Wing, so I would go back there again. Nothing really beats its fab location. Was with my old mum and young children, so it was fantastic that we could just get there in less than 5 min off the Shinkansen. Could exit from Shinkansen and walk direct towards Kintetsu Railways. On the right side of entrance to Kintetsu, there's an escalator going down. As you reach the ground level, just walk ahead while enjoying small eateries and shops. As you see a restaurant called Amichi, take left and leave the building. All you need to do is just walk across the street and you'd be at the hotel. Could leave your luggage before your check-in and after your check-out. We arrived quite early in the morning at around 930 (left Tokyo by Nozomi at 7am) so we left our luggage there and went out to Kiyomizu Temple. Facilities are quite up to the standards. Some parts of the buildings do need some face lifts for sure, but got all the amenities and facilities we hoped for. We didn't eat at any of restaurants, as we preferred to enjoy other fantastic restaurants at Isetan Dept-Store (just the other side of the Kyoto station) or other traditional eateries in town. We tend to walk so much in Kyoto and Nara and come back exhausted. So the hotel's proximity to the Kyoto station is quite important for us. If you are to plan a 1-3 days trip to Kyoto/Nara, I could highly recommend that you'd check with JR Tokai Tours. Unfortunately they only have Japanese website which market quite good tours to Kyoto. I normally purchase a free and easy package tour to Kyoto that includes round-trip tickets from Tokyo to Kyoto and hotel stays. There are quite many hotels you could choose from depending on your budget. It's really reasonable. Once you reach Tokyo, ask at any JR station where you could find a branch of JR Tokai Tours. My brother booked for us at Shinjuku Branch. We are already planning our next trip to Kyoto this fall.

Room Tip: Could recommend either a premier floor or the South wing. If you are to stay at south wing, ask for...

First, you have to ask yourself WHY, you're in Kyoto. The hotel is convenient to the Shinkansen station but not a lot else. There are a few reasonably cheap cafes around the station but not much else and hotel restaurants seemed quite expensive. So, if you're here for a quick stop over- seems like the ideal location, otherwise you will have to catch taxis or the subway to get into the main part of town and to the temples and palaces.
As always the staff were incredibly polite and kind.
The room seemed enormous after Tokyo but the whole place is looking a bit tired and could do with a freshen up. One good thing is that you can actually open a window and let some fresh air in. Found the bed to be a little hard as well.
