“Small, but comfortable, clean and convenient”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 September 2012

Stayed for 2 nights in early August. The hotel staff was very accommodating. The rate was reasonable and breakfast was included. The breakfast buffet was just OK, with an assortment of Japanese and continental options. Room was very small and cramped, but it was clean and I didn't really spend much time in it other than to sleep, so didn't bother me. The bed was comfortable, and despite the heat outside, the room was air conditioned. The location is ok. Close to shopping and Gion, but a bit further from some of the bigger sites. There is a subway stop though a close walk from the hotel.

contrary to some reviews...the staff were very courteous to us...the hotel is walkable to the covered shopping alley and the nishiki market as well...the gion district and the river is also near where restaurants are aplenty...i will definitely consider to stay in this hotel again

Room Tip: book early

We stayed there in April for 2 nights. I would just give this hotel an average rating according to the follow comments.
1. Location. The hotel was located in the middle of the shopping area, which was nice for some shoppers, but not us. You can try walking to the Gion area (The old house area with Geisha walking around near the Kamo river), but it would be around 20-30 minutes. The nearest subway was 15 minutes away by walking. So, it is not very good, but not very bad choice in terms of location.

2. Rooms. OK room with strange view. The view from our room was the cemetery.

2. Staffs. This is the real problem of this hotel. I've travelled to Japan for more than 10 times and found this hotel has the most impolite staff in Japan. We asked for help from them to tell the taxi driver the location of the restaurant that we wanted to go to, but they refused. The staff there told us to give the taxi driver the address card instead. We even told them that we did everything we could but the taxi driver didn't understand what we meant.

If you are fluent in Japanese and don't need any help from the hotel staff at all, you can give it a try. If not, try staying somewhere else. Kyoto is a big city with thousands of hotels. Choose wisely.

The Kyoto Best Western was a perfect spot to be during our adventures in Kyoto. Our boys (15,17) liked being steps away from shopping and we loved the proximity to the river. Most restaurants that were within walking distance were great. The rooms are small, but super clean and comfortable. We came from the Four Seasons in Tokyo, so obviously the differences in services provided were noted, but the staff were always kind and helpful. The breakfasts were great, we really enjoyed being able to choose between more traditionally Japanese foods as well as western pastries and meats. For the price, we would definitely stay here again.

I stayed here in July 2012. The hotel seems well kept up - I got booked in a smoking room, but it didn't smell like smoke at all.

Reception was incredibly friendly and all were fluent English speakers, and apologized about 5 times for the smoking room mix up.

The room was very large - and has air conditioning that works very well! If you've ever traveled to Japan in July, you know how important this is.

It's tucked away (it's easy to miss so be aware of that), but it is by lots of shopping and food, and very close to a JR stop.
