My family and I traveled to Kyoto and stayed at Hotel Kanra for our first four nights. From the moment we entered the hotel, we were showered with attention from the front desk concierges and other staff. Check in was a breeze, and we were each given a glass of refreshing cold sencha as well as an azuki red bean pancake sweet treat - a really nice mid day boost before setting out to lunch.

Although check in was officially at 3pm, we arrived in Kyoto at about noon and our rooms were already ready to our surprise. We were thoroughly wowed when we were shown our rooms, as we did not expect rooms of this size and decor. The rooms are expansive, and the tatami seating area was a nice touch that added a little Japanese traditionalism to the interior design. Beds were adequately comfortable and we made use of the hinoki bath tub in the bathroom every night. We were given rooms that faced the temple which was a quiet street and so we slept well each night.

Every morning we set out to a different part of Kyoto - Kibune, Fushimi Inari, Uji, and even a day trip to Nara. The front desk was extremely helpful in getting us 5 person taxis and pointing out directions accurately. Each time we walked out and entered the hotel, the front desk greeted us warmly and asked how our day was going which was a very pleasant touch to their hospitality.

Although the hotel is not located along the main streets of Kyoto, it is 1 minute away from Exit 8 of Gojo Station, which is 1 subway stop away from Shijio (where Daimaru, Takashimaya and other main boutiques are located). We used a mixture of taxis and the subway to get around depending on where the sights were.

Overall, Hotel Kanra surpassed our expectations and we would not hesitate to return in the not too distant future!

Room Tip: Ask for rooms facing the temple as they tend to be quieter

We were really pleasantly surprised by how big the room is. We are a family of 4--2 adults and 2 teenagers and we booked the 2 queen bed room. The size of the room is easily double of what we got for the same rate in Tokyo. The decor is modern and tasteful. Air conditioning worked really nice--and that makes a big difference in the June summer heat. The bathroom was elegant! It's got a wood tub as well as a standing shower. Of course, the toilet has the prerequisite bidet. We really liked the fact that the hotel is next to the temple. We had nice strolls through the temple grounds early in the morning when it was nice and quiet as well as later on in the day with our children. Although it's in the middle of the city, it's very quiet. We walked to and from the Kyoto station to the hotel, approximately 5-10 minutes. Even in the heat, it wasn't that bad. However, to get to the old town (Goen), you'll have to take a taxi and it's approximately 10 minutes away. I would also strongly recommend getting the package where breakfast is included. We tried both the western breakfast as well as the traditional Japanese breakfast--both were delicious! Overall, highly recommended for a family vacation or a couple's trip!

We had a wonderful experience at Hotel Kanra. The rooms were spotless, service was excellent and the entire hotel spelled wonderful. They have their own aroma therapy scent blended for the hotel and it's available to purchase. The onsite restaurant was accommodating to part of our party that was vegan with soy allergies. This can be a difficult combination in Japan. We were well taken care of and enjoyed our trip.

From the moment we arrived every member of the staff was extremely helpful. The rooms are clean, beds comfortable, bathrooms modern, and rooms are spacious. The cafe in the lobby is great for a quick bite in the am. The restaurant in the building was accommodating for a gluten allergy.

The hotel lived up to its high traveler reviews. We had 2 rooms on the 3rd floor and they were clean, quiet, and the air conditioning was great. The bathroom shower and cedar tub were beautiful and water pressure was strong. Storage was adequate. While the rooms are a bit narrow, they are very functionally laid out and the beds were very comfortable. The bathroom mirror was a bit low for a 6' tall man, but certainly didn't negatively impact our experience. The hotel staff was very helpful in hailing cabs and speaking Japanese to drivers advising where we wanted to go, and in securing restaurant reservations. Walking distance to Starbucks, train station and a large temple (sightseeing). We liked the small feel (boutique like).
