“Take a bite!”
Reviewed 24 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We had a great time at the Apple House. It was a unique experience, living like true residents of Kyoto, in an authentic neighbourhood. The house was spacious by Japanese standards and had all the comfort requirements ticked off. It's big enough for a family, so two of us enjoyed the extra room. Hiroko is an excellent host, extremely well organised and so friendly. She loves the Apple House, and we kept discovering quirky references to apples every day. It's an Apple shrine in the best possible way. Two air conditioners made it easy in hot summer. Two bikes made it easy to get around. There is a great park 10min ride from the house, where I spotted deer family during my runs. And the Imperial Garden, which is highly recommended, is 5min walk. The only thing that found tricky was travel to the heart of Kyoto using trains. The closest station is not on the main line and is of little use. Matsumoto station is a fair bike ride away. It's probably best to explore bus options, which we didn't. Either way, travel to and from the house will chew up some of your time. But if you're keen to experience a more genuine Kyoto lifestyle in a comfortable spacious and very reasonably priced house, this one is a great choice.

“Apple House is THE BEST!!!”

Our family of four had a fantastic time at Apple House. Hiroko is a perfect hostess, and Apple House is a perfect place to stay in Kyoto. Hiroko was wonderful communicating with us prior to our arrival, and she met us at the train station when we arrived. Hiroko even gave us a ride back to the train station when we departed. She gave us wonderful suggestions for restaurants, sights to see, and experiences to include. We really appreciated using the bikes she let us borrow. The house is a wonderful example of a traditional Japanese home with tatami mats and a fantastic bath. If you are going to Kyoto, definitely stay at Apple House!!!

“Pleasantly cozy”
Reviewed 19 May 2015 for a stay in April 2015

Apple House is a comfortable and cozy place to stay in Kyoto - a home away from home.

It was really great to be able to cook breakfast before heading out to explore Kyoto. The kitchen was great for making fresh-ginger garlic tea to help us stay healthy. The heating kept the whole house warm, cozy, very comfortable - they were easy to operate. At the end of a packed day, we looked forward to resting on the Japanese futons on the tatami mats. We all slept very well.

Hiroko is a lovely host. She brought us to the grocery store, which is an easy 10-15 minute walk from the house, on our first night. Our son was feeling under the weather and having something to eat that night was so helpful. She responded very promptly to all the emails, and even wrote notes on a copy of the map she had prepared in advance for the taxi driver.

On our last night, I took the path towards the mountain that can be seen from the house and it was a treat to see it!

Although our visit is rather short and packed, staying at Apple House made us feel we are going at a more relaxed pace and made the experience more authentic. We are already thinking of the second visit, and when that time comes, it will back to Apple House!

“Home sweet Home!”
Reviewed 18 May 2015 for a stay in April 2015

We have been back to Apple House six times. So it is like my home in Kyoto. The house is comfortable, clean and it has all the basic necessities and more. The clothes washing facilities are great. Everything there so you can hang your washing under cover or outside on sunny days! The owner of the house and the neighbours around are lovely to have. They are around when you need them for any help or to chat to make friends but at the same time they trust that you will look after the Apple House. I love being there and hope to go back again and again as it really feels like my second home with my new friends we have made. Nearly forgot! The Ryku is just around the corner and all the wonderful temples are close.

“Our home away from home in Kyoto”
Reviewed 4 May 2015 for a stay in April 2015

Apple House welcomed us back for a sixth stay and managed to keep us warm and dry through a very wet April and to provide a fabulous base for our visits to some fabulous places - revisiting Heiezan and Shisendo and finally making it to Fushima Inari. This is such a welcoming and rewarding self-catering home that we are already looking forward to our return.
