Everything was perfect. Super comfortable clean hotel. Rooms were spacious enough and well thought out. The bathroom was great. They have a nice lounge area on the ground floor with complimentary coffee machine. You can buy delicious baked goods around the corner and have your coffee and breakfast right here if you don't want to go to a restaurant.

Rather terrible experience. Definitely not a service one should be getting at the hotel reception, not forgetting we are in japan the most polite country in the world. Not coming back to this hotel for sure!

This was the best hotel we stayed in whilst we were in Japan. The rooms are new and more spacious compared to other hotels we stayed at, the fit-out was quite trendy and there were even tatami mats around the bed. I particularly liked the matcha powder and provision of a chasen and the toiletries which were great and included a cloth bag and even ladies set with hair-tie.

The location was good, easy walking distance to Pontocho, a bit further for Gion. All the main attractions were accessible by bus except for Fushimi Inari which was an easy train ride. The hotel does provide a map with which stops and buses to take for each tourist attraction.

I found the staff the usual courteous and very polite. Although we were told it was impossible to check in prior to 3pm I wasn't surprised by the inflexibility and were not travelling with children.

We were charged to check in at 2pm instead of the usual time of 3pm. I have NEVER encountered this before in any hotel I have every stayed at. It's the first impression the hotel made on us as it was literally the first thing they said to us when we arrived and there was no way back from this in terms of improving the impression they had made on us - it seemed greedy given that the room was ready - they just wanted to squeeze 1000 Yen out of customers to check in ahead of time. The fact that it was a small amount makes it worse as it's petty of them to do this. We had a toddler who was very tired and needed their nap - we explained this and they didn't care. The manager was a complete coward and stayed in their office out of sight relaying the message 'pay 1000 yen or wait an hour' via the young boy clerk who seemed somewhat embarrassed by the situation but was not capable of explaining why we needed to pay and didn't apologise either. They insist on it being cash that you pay immediately rather than adding it to your room bill - this is unorthodox and I wish I had insisted on an official receipt documenting exactly what the payment was for as in retrospect this raises a red flag about the integrity of this payment - a cash payment with no official record of it. We were tired and wanted to check in so didn't think of it - something they clearly rely on - taking advantage of weary customers.

The next morning we asked the staff on reception for help with tourist attractions and they didn't have a clue - it wasn't a language problem - they just didn't know anything about Kyoto tourist attractions - surprising given this is pretty basic training for staff in a hotel in a tourist area.

Breakfast is odd as it's in the Italian restaurant next door which is otherwise separate to the hotel - you can't wear the room attire to it because it's separate and this is a shame. The buffet is trying to be Italian with western and Japanese so it just doesn't work - it's 1500 Yen per person. There are plenty of other cafes nearby so I would recommend you go to those instead.

There is a new hotel opening on the next street to this called The Cross Hotel - it looks similar in style and has the same great location so I would recommend you try staying there - I will be next time I visit Kyoto as unfortunately this hotel isn't aware of the fact that you don't get a second chance to make a first impression.
