“pathetic staff, okay rooms”
Reviewed 13 January 2012

The staff members were rude and weird in that dim dingy lobby of very poor taste.
Rooms were good for the price. They were clean as well.
Location was good for the price - 3-4 bus stop away from Minamiza Theater where you can watch Kabuki, same with the main shopping street and stretch of restaurants on the very narrow street along the river. about 15 min away on a bus from Kyoto station.

Choose this hotel because of the location: on the north side of one of the main roads running through Kyoto. Standard hotel, clean room, free WIFI, well priced. We had no breakfast with the room, but there are enough shops and restaurants outside the hotel.

Altough the rooms are rather small (japanese standard) this hotel is a really good option. Located within walking distance of pretty much everything and really well connected by public transport, this hotel is a good place to stay if the intention is not to spend a lot of time in the room (due to size).

Clean, well maintained and the staff is really friendly and helpful and I found that their level of english was much better than in other hotels around Japan.

The only down side was the bed, I found it quite hard and also they only had one channel in english in the tv, but I would stay here again if I was to be back in Kyoto.

Not well known hotel, but it quite cheap and not far from Kawaramichi, the shopping street of Kyoto.
The most thing that I like is service mind of Hotel's receptions.
I and my friend walked too much and got the pain in our legs.
The receptions not only tell the way to drug store, but also gave us the medicine before.
I and my friend were impressed by this.
Furthermore, they can spoke and communicated in English quite well.

We stayed at the Hotel Oaks in Decmeber 2010. Finding it was hard, only because the directions that we got were from an exit on the subway line that we couldn't find once we got out to the subway exits.
If you take the subway from Kyoto station, it's about a 5 minute walk. The building looks like an office building, and has green lettering up the front of it, so you can't miss it.
The staff are really great! They spoke English very well, and were always helpful when we had questions about places to go/see/eat.
The location is great, it's about a 20 minute walk to Ponto-cho and Gion, you just have to go towards these 2 regions to get more restaurants. The ones closer to the hotel are either a bit pricey for what they offer, or they didn't have English menus so I wasn't sure what we would have been ordering and if it was worth the price.
The rooms were surprisingly comfortable. Every hotel that we stayed at in Asia, I was expecting to be sleeping on my bags, but the hotel rooms at Hotel Oaks were a comfortable size and we could lay one suitcase open on the ground and leave another one standing up, with room to move around.
The sleep quality was the only downfall. The walls are pretty thin and we were staying in the room closest to the elevators, so we didn't really have any control on that. We could hear every time the room next to us kept opening and closing the doors - which was alot because on one side we had university students partying in a few rooms and on the other side we had a couple of families - their kids kept running up and down the halls - which usually isn't an issue - but we had the university students up until 2am (which wouldn't have been an issue except that we were leaving the next morning for a 12 hour flight home) and we had the kids running at 6am up and down the halls with their parents yelling after them.

All in all, the Hotel Oaks is a great hotel. For the price that I got it and for the location I would definitely stay there again.
