Our colleague got invited to a diplomatic reception, so we took the Metro down to West Lake. About 5:30, we figured we could eat. I had just noticed Grandma’s Restaurant as we walked by and was amazed to see it was rated #7 AND was vegetarian friendly! We had to go and boy was it wonderful!

Arrive before 6 PM on a weekday. There was no line at all. By 6, the courtyard was packed with people in line!

The menu is in Chinese only and you check what you want on the menu, but thanks to Google Translate, we ordered 8 dishes of vegetables. The servers made sure there was no meat. All the dishes were great, but stinky tofu is an acquired taste (it took me a decade to try it). The green beans and eggplant were both great, but the cauliflower was the BEST cauliflower of my life! It was THAT good!! All for RMB129! Service was great, too. The server recognized chicken in one of the dishes and replaced it without us asking.

What a wonderful thing to find a place like this with a mobile device.

My two teenage sons and I visited this restaurant one evening when we took a day trip from Shanghai to Hangzhou. All in all we visited over 40 different restaurants in our 1 month holiday in China. Grandma's in Hangzhou was in the top 3 for all of us. We loved the food flavours, enjoyed very good service. All for what we felt were very reasonable prices. While none of us speak Mandarin, we did use google translate with our phones (well the teens both did) to go over the menu. There were lots of vegetarian options. It didn't matter that the restaurant staff spoke such limited English, they had ready smiles and used the calculator to show us the price of the bill at the end of a great meal. I wish we had a Grandma's here in New Zealand!

Grandma's Kitchen (in Chinese: 外婆家) - There's nothing like Grandma's food, and you'll be surprised, but even the grandmothers in Hangzhou know how to cook great! Grandma's restaurant, located a short distance from the West Lake, is part of a successful chain of restaurants, which has existed for more than 10 years in the city. The waiters working in the restaurant are extraordinarily courteous and professional, so they can recommend the most delicious dishes on the menu. In order to enter the restaurant, which is considered one of the most popular in the city, you will have to wait about half an hour in line, but remember that the food is worth it! Among the dishes you will find on the menu are the famous beggar chicken and the late-tea tea. How does the menu? There is an English menu. Average price: 45 yuan

After being recommended this restaurant from someone who used to live in Hangzhou we decided to try it one evening, but we were disappointed to see that the whole building is undergoing renovations. No signs on if that specific location is going to be reopened.
