The out-of-town location of the Empart Hotel is fine if there is no reason for one to be in the overcrowded Kunming city itself, as it's near to the airport and there is also a large shopping complex nearby. The main tower of the hotel has well furbished rooms with good furnish and bedding. However this is not an international hotel so the quality of service, particularly in the eyes of foreign customers, could be problematic. Most of hotel staff don't speak English and choices for breakfast were mostly Chinese and the cafe can be extremely overcrowded with locals. The hotel also doesn't enforce the non-smoking policy in public areas, so locals will light up cigarettes wherever ever they like, including in the elevators.

I booked one room to stay before continuing to Lijiang and booked the standard hotel in the north tower. Well, I believe that when one hotel is categorized for a 5 star, it has to be for every aspect. However, during my stay it seems that the 5 star applies only for the newer tower as my room was dusty, smelly and felt more like 2-3 star. When I entered the room, there was a lady knocking the door asking if I would like to have the room cleaned. It felt strange indeed! Then, after a while, I understood why. The room was so full of dust that the next morning I woke up with my throat in pain. I know I should've complained and asked the room to be cleaned, or ask for a room change, but I was too tired to do so and slept away..
The breakfast the next morning was adequate with a lot of options, ranging from western style and chinese local style foods. Staff were all helpful and corteous. Apart for the 'discrimination' of the rooms, it could've been a pleasant short stay.

Kunming is associated with Shangri-La resort and spa kind of experiences, but the Empark is not that. It is strictly a business hotel, and much better than average. The decor and ambiance is upscale, and there is actually some nice lighting, wood, and interesting design which rises above the usual stone-and-florescents of Chinese business hotels. Rooms are luxurious and homey, they staff is friendly and efficient, and the restaurant has a great mix of well done cuisines where anyone can find something familiar. There is a big shopping center and Carrefour a short walk away.

Stayed for one night on a layover flying from Chiang Mai to Beijjng.

Convenient for KMG, 5-10 minute cab drive.

Huge hotel, decent front desk service.

Rooms characterless but functional.

Breakfast, lots of choice but nothing really wow.

Overall decent but nothing special.
