The building itself is spectacular. So much so that it's almost hard to concentrate on the wonderful works of art!

“One of the best museums in the world”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 May 2012

I've been to a lot of museums and this one is pretty amazing ... as others have mentioned, like Versailles, the British Museum and the Louvre all rolled into one.

Suggestions:
If you can afford two days - buy the two day pass.
Buy your ticket on the Internet in advance - it also includes the extra fee for taking photos.
Get in line early (before opening time) and have the printout of your Internet ticket in-hand ... they will pull you out of line and send you to a different ticket window (or the info desk)
There are two optional tours (gold room / treasure room) and maybe only one in English each day - have to be early to book these (only like 15 people on a tour)
We studied the floor plan for about a half-hour to understand how to get around ... once mastered no problems ... but if you have a hard time with directions you may want to consider a guided tour
Once inside the ticketed area we were solicited twice by licensed guides - one also wanted to offer us a 4-hour 10,000 ruble city tour (ouch!) ... maybe best consulting with your hotel or on TA forums for guide arrangements if desired

“St Petersburg and the Hermitage”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 May 2012

Another reviewer said "If you visit St Petersburg, you have to visit this place." I feel even more strongly--the Hermitage alone is a sufficient draw to go to St. Petersburg. I have been to the Louvre, Prado, Musee d'Orsay, Vatican et al and the Hermitage at least equals and in some respects outshines them all. The Hermitage is just one of the many awesome sites available in St. Petersburg and the surrounding area. I was also struck by some of the "Onion domed" churches in the city and by the architecture and history of Navy Yard from the old Soviet days.
If you are going on a cruise make sure they schedule at least a 2 day port stop or you will be shortchanging yourself.

“Hermitage and Winter Palace”

A once in a lifetime experience. We spent the whole day; first of all
going through the palace rooms and then the section of the museum having Russian artists around the Impressionist period
