I found Tropic a great bargain for what it offered. I thought the pool area was decent size and quite quiet, despite the parking lot location, I found it relaxing enough to sit and read on several occasions. My room was on the back side on top floor at the very end, facing another set of apartments and a side view of the pool. It wasn't dark at all. I LOVED the kitchen on the terrace with the slats for privacy, and found it great to be outside and inside at the same time! Also, there was one wide open, unslatted window, which gave lots of light. For me, sufficient light came from the sliding glass doors into the room ti make it bright and airy. The room was quite large, the bathroom was particularly spacious, wih lots of storage space and a nice deep tub. The room decor was a bit dated, with little to no effort given to any particular sense of style. The television was adequate, although I thought the placement over the sofa (instead of over the mirror at the foot of the bed, was odd. took two days (because of holidays) to get my safe working, but the nice women at front desk let me keep my valuables there. The room had Internet, but not wifi, so my iPad was rendered inoperable for the occasion, which was a bit inconvenient, as there was only one internet cafe in the area, and it was attached to a restaurant, so not very approachable. The location was very convenient, less than 5min walk to the beach. Not many walkable restaurants, though, so did need a car, and parking was secure and plentiful. The walk-to beach was decent, although it had a lot of pine needles and rocky bits, but was still nice swimming area within. (beaches down the way at St. Leu were nicer). There was a nice shopping center nearby (within walking distance) with a good grocery store, an Internet restaurant (Chez Laila's), a laundry and several small shops. Not St. Gilles, but ok if no car! Contrary to misleading assertion, hotel is NOT in St. Gilles beach (although may well be in the St.Gilles district), and you need a car to get the 10min drive from L'hermitage to (the supremely overrated) St. Gilles pedestrian tourism area. Overall, Tropic was a great deal, was clean, quiet and comfy. It was a SELF-catering apartment, not a hotel room, so not having 24hr attendance wasn't a problem for me. Recommended, especially for families.

Room Tip: Rooms on upper floor and rooms away from the street, parking lot side were quieter, although little view.

The price is right at this new budget hotel/ apartment complex that will especially appeal to families who want to make this their base while in Reunion. It’s also not a bad option for others transiting to or from the airport before exploring the rest of the island.

Positivies:
• Good value for money
• Very friendly service. Morning receptionist is a gem. Afternoon one nice but couldn’t even arrange a transfer to the airport. (Note: If you don’t have a car getting around Reunion with luggage is a big problem as the bus service is not that frequent and doesn’t stop everywhere. They can contact a taxi man who will arrange transfers for one person for Euro 80 and for Euro 40 if you don’t mind sharing.)
• Very clean and fixtures are new
• Great location near supermarket, laundromat, restaurants
• Internet is cable which is good given the vagaries of Reunion WIFI but it is VERY slow. You pay Euro 5 for a day. Cheaper if you buy a week’s usage.

Negatives:
• Room very dark even during day. The room has a terrace with a table and kitchen outside which is surrounded by dark wooden slats to hide the view of the parking lot and give you some privacy. This makes the interior of the room very dark.
• Bed is a queen couch bed and so mattress thin and a bit uncomfortable, but tolerable.
• Breakfast for Euro 8 (instead of 10 Euro) in the tennis court restaurant. You have to inform them by 5 PM the prior day. (Note: You get more atmosphere and a better breakfast at the beach restaurants as of 9 AM.)
• Pool is tiny (think hot tub more than pool) and surrounded by a parking lot and tennis court.
• Reception is only open from 7-7. If you need help during the off hours they charge you between Euro 20-30 an hour depending on what time of the night it is.
• The shower in my room (room 118) didn’t work.
• Bed light broken (lady knew about it when she took me to the room and said it needed to be fixed so I got the feeling it would be a while before the light and shower were fixed)
• Tiny TV screen
• Check in and check out process a bit convoluted because you basically sign a short term lease and have to do an inventory of all the crockery, linen, fixtures, etc.

Tip: Eat at Coco Beach (20 minute walk) and the Creperie around the corner opposite the tennis court. (Turn right as you leave reception. Enter the pathway of the apt./ hotel next door past the swimming pool of the Tropic Hotel swimming pool, past the tennis court and you will see the Creperie on your left. Great salads, crepes and deserts at good prices.

I wouldn’t base a beach holiday here but will stay again as a one night transit stop.

We booked 2 x Duplexs @ EUR 95.00 per unit. For the 8 of travelling ( family and friends ) so a range of ages, it was perfect for our needs. The location is great a quick drive to St Gilles for restuarnts and night life, a 2minute walk to the local bakery, and a 50 minute walk to the beach. It overs an upstairs room and bathroom en-suite, and a room downstairs that is a lounge / kitchen and bathroom. The lounge has a couch that coverts to two rollaway beds. Plasma TV Screen (nothing in english mind you). Aircon in both rooms. Value for money if you dont plan on spending hours in your hotel room, I can recommend this. It has a small swimming pool, clean and neat(bring your own beach towels though), it offers a snack bar restuarant and a vending machine for snacks and coffees as well. Reception was very friendly even though we battled with the french / english. The only down side, is the bathoom down stairs - the bath/shower is situated under the staircase so you basically have to kneel to shower without knocking your head on the stairs - and Im not very tall. Overall a really nice, neat clean hotel, offering everything we needed for our two night stay. Oh and free parking as well always a bonus.

After a week in various grade hotels in Madagascar this was just what we needed. having spent three nights at Hotel Select in St Denis on the way over the difference for a couple of Euro extra per night is huge. Nice big rooms (we stayed in duplex with our teenage daughter in the lower level) everything clean & working, and very helpful staff especially as we didnt speak much French (used a dictionary & Phrasebook) but always managed to be understood in the end. Close to the restaurants of l'Hermitage beach area and a supermarket as well as about 50m from beach. Pool a little small but not crowded on any day we were there. Complimentary newspaper left in foyer each day. Didnt need pegs for our washing and just used the small clothes horse supplied.

Would certainly consider staying again
