“Watch the Bill”
Reviewed 28 April 2012

I have used this hotel for several years for business trips to Manila. Being in Makati it is a safer area to be a night and being close to two modern shopping malls can be useful.
Service is second to none in the hotel and security is high profile though I am not convinced it is effective as it could be.
There would be no need to venture out to eat given an excellent catering department serving food in a number of venues catering for all tastes.
Rooms are beginning to look jaded and in need of some refurbishment. Public areas are impressive and every area is well maintained and clean.
This hotel is expensive. Do not be fooled into thinking everything in the Phlippines is cheap. Quality costs.
A final word of warning, the hotel will 'reserve' more than sufficient funds on your credit card on arrival to cover accomodation so make sure you have an adequate credit limit ahead of arrival. Also check terms of booking, such as is breakfast included and check the bill carefully to make sure you are not being charged for mini bar items or other miscellaneous items you have not used.

We stayed in this hotel to celebrate our 9th wedding anniversary. I've been in this hotel couple of times before attending weddings, dinner with family or on business convention. But it was our first time to check-in. Everything was very luxirious. I especially love their main lobby. During our stay they had a dragon made of red flowers as centerpiece as it was the Chinese New Year celebration back then. Lovely!

Room - spacious enough. Comfortable and huge bed.

Location - couldn't be more perfect! It's within Makati shopping center! Shopping, food or just simply hanging out, no problem. If you love coffee, there's one Starbucks right around the corner.

Breakfast - outperformed it's branch at Edsa. Made me wished I had bigger capacity to eat more. :)

Pool - this one comes 3rd to Sofitel and Shangri-la Edsa. A bit typical, but good enough.

We stayed there twice in the space of two weeks.
All went exceptionally well on our second stay until the last moment, on departing.
On the morning of 22nd of April, at 5am, we were leaving and I walked down the ramp to the street to see if there were any taxis available, of which there were four.
As I exited the main doors and went to walk down the ramp the security guard offered me one the hotels cars to go to the airport.
I explained that we wanted a taxi as it would be cheaper.
He asked if we wanted a metered taxi, to which I replied "Yes".
He said "Wait here and I will get one for you." He yelled to the taxi which we could see in the street, from the hotel entrance doors.
The taxi came up and we got in. I asked the taxi driver if the meter was on to which he replied " No, this is a hotel taxi."
I did not understand this entirely but assumed that it was a hotel courtesy taxi, meaning there would be no charge.
When we arrived at the airport I offered the taxi driver P100 tip.
He responded that the taxi cost was actually P600!
So, instead of being allowed to walk the 30 meters to the street and getting charged P150 -200 we were charged ~three times the amount.
This is very, very disappointing and is what we visitors hear so much about before visiting the Philippines. Tricks to overcharge!
This trickery (dishonesty?) was made even more disappointing because it was made by a security employee of the hotel, whom we considered up until that point to be the friendliest, most polite and honest of all the people we had dealt with in the Philippines.

Finally, Shangri-la security staff need to realise that we visitors are not all rich and deserving for these types of dishonest ways.
We work hard save our money for a long time to afford these holidays and are happy and willing to pay a fair price for services.
This incident was not an example of a "fair price for services".

Lesson - Do not catch a taxi within the hotel grounds or with the help of security guards and always ask to make sure that the meter is on.

Within the hotel itself, all was as it was the last time we stayed - close to perfection.

Huge hotel right in the centre of the shopping district, it is pure luxury. The common areas are large and plush, and the rooms very comfortable with free wifi and good amenities.

The service is also very good, and with 3 restaurants on site there is plenty to choose from when it comes to meal time. The gym and pool facilities are also well appointed and so there is lots to do.

I felt safe here and that was very important for me. The workers are friendly and the guard dogs and their handlers are awesome. Room service was on point (but the food was eh, ok at its best). The chefs and wait staff at the breakfast buffet were awesome! They wen't above and beyond for me.

What I wasn't used to seeing but I totally understand, were ladies of the night with business men at breakfast or all over the hotel. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just a heads up if you see it, don't worry. :)
