This was our first time in this part of the world. Living in Canada my wife and I usually go to Caribbean islands for sun destination. What we've experienced in Constance Le Prince Maurice exceeded our expectations as to service, the grounds, the rooms, the food and most importantly people. Very friendly, ready to help and serve. It is hard to remember all the names but we would like to thank Rishi for the fantastic food he prepared, Imtiaz and stephan for making us feel welcomed and Sachin for arranging and delivering very early breakfast on our departure day. We strongly recommend Le Prince Maurice for a very special holidays.

This hotel is in a good location and well designed, built and maintained. Their real draw is the quality of the food, in all restaurants consistently excellent - exceeding our (high) expectations. We are a family of four (6 and 4 yr olds) and stayed in a family suite that worked very well with the kids in an adjoining bedroom with their own facilities. The Kids Club was very good and we didn't expect them to want to spend so much time there - but it allowed the adults some real relaxation time. Whilst is kids club they did Tennis, Golf, Pizza making, a Glass bottomed boat ride, a cocktail demonstration, T shirt painting, and lots of well supervised swimming in the shallow kids pool with their new friends. The supervising staff were very skilled with good staff:kid ratios.

So why the title saying its not that kid friendly. Well as per other reviewers we had two occasions where lunch service took over 1 hour for very simple single course. With young kids you really need quick service and chasing the kitchen is not what I expect in a 5 star resort. More importantly if you want to feed your kids supper before 7pm you can't in any of the restaurants as they are not open until 7pm - and none of the restaurants are set up for young children (all fine glass and China etc). We found this lack of focus on something so fundamental incredible. The choices for kids supper are either room service, a 6.30 kids sitting in the kids club (without parents) or a slow starchy adult restaurant experience after 7pm.

As others have noted - this hotel has a somewhat pompous dress code in the restaurants. No swimwear at alluring the day and for dinner long trousers (no jeans), closed shoes and shirts with collars. I am all in favour of maintaining standards but on holiday in a very hot country what is wrong with quality tailored shorts and sandals? I only had one pair of trousers with me that met all the rules .....

They certainly know how to charge too - I don't mind the £5 for a Beer, but £8 for a bottle of sparkling water with food was pushing it (although they provide copies free water bottles on the beach or around the pool during the day). The wine list is extensive and the 24,000 bottle cellar worth a look around - so why then, repeatedly, were they "out of stock" of the popular reasonable (£40) bottles. It looked like a practice of upselling but with such a large cellar there is no excuse for not having enough stock of the every day wines that people drink. Over 7 nights 4 of my first choice bottles, although offered on the wine list were subsequently not available - the sommelier not even looking, just telling me straight away they didn't have it. Hmmm

To top it all (and it was due to my own stupidity for not using the safe), I had 7 large local notes removed from my wallet which was in a rucksack in the room. Whilst only about £150, we reported this to management who ultimately concluded they couldn't identify the culprit due to the number of staff that had entered our room (from keycard records interrogated). The hotel did not offer to refund this cash although they waived one lunch bill.

The hotel is very good overall - but so are many others in this price bracket on the island.

Dear valued guests,

We would like to thank you for having chosen Constance Le Prince Maurice for your family holidays and for having taken the time and effort in sharing your recent experience with us.

We are delighted to read that you had a great family holiday with us, we will not miss the opportunity to share these fantastic praises with the team and in particular with Jennifer her team at the Kids club.

Your feedback regarding the food service delay is duly noted and we unfortunately did not anticipate on this occasion, we are currently working on this particular issue and would like to apologies for the delays.

We currently stock 42 different wines from 6 different countries ranging from Euro35 to Euro45, we also wish to inform you that we source and purchase our wines directly which means that the saving made are passed to our guests, together with a team of 13 sommeliers we not only offer the largest variety but also we are the most competitive prices in Mauritius allowing our guests to chose a wine that matches the food or the moment rather the price.

With regards to the alleged theft that took place in your room we do recall from the conversation with the Hotel Manager that you were not expecting a refund. Due to the short time ahead, the late flight the next day and not wanting you to leave the resort on this note, a complimentary late check out and lunch was offered to the family as a gesture which in itself largely covered the GBP140 reported loss.

We exchanged several emails and we would like to once again apologies for the incidents you experienced and wish to renew our offer to personally take care of your future travel plans to Mauritius.

Yours sincerely,

Christophe Plantier,
General Manager

We loved so much about this beautiful hotel. They have made the best of the quiet location by building a truly elegant resort, reminiscent of the Oberoi in Seminyak and the Datai in Langkawi. The offering for families was superb, the family suites married practicality with luxury and tranquility. The main pool was wonderful - vast, with breathtaking views and the ideal depth for kids and adults alike. It was incredibly indulgent to have a second, idyllic pool which was almost empty and the very essence of chilled-out bliss. The service on the beach and around the pool was impeccable and the beach felt somewhere you could truly relax. The resort never felt busy and we felt that we had found another special place.

So, why not 5 stars? We'd have preferred a more relaxed, professional approach to service at dinner. We had 2 different evenings which were neither relaxing nor enjoyable and that's a shame, given the efforts of the majority of staff and the sheer quality of the offering. The grave service issue that arose was handled immediately and decisively, but it marred an experience, which otherwise had the potential to be outstanding.

We had to think very carefully when it came to choosing a hotel in Mauritius as my husband is very allergic to shellfish. The reservation staff assured us that the chef at Le Prince Maurice would be able to ensure no cross contamination in the kitchen and they exceeded all our expectations in that regard. The food was excellent in both the main restaurant and the floating restaurant. (we did not try the Asian one due to nut and sesame allergies in the family). The cherry on the cake was when my daughter caught two baracudda while we were there and the kitchen prepared them beautifully for us the next day. A very special meal that we will remember forever.

If fishing is on your list of activities, you must ask for Pascal. He took us fishing on two days and then we went out on a snorkelling trip with him which was fantastic. The hotel also offer snorkelling daily (free of charge), however the trip out with Pascal was to a spot a bit further out and the coral and fish were much better than the hotel spot. Well worth the money.

My girls, aged 11 and 8, both enjoyed the activities at the kids club, choosing to dip in and out as it suited them. The staff running it are very well trained, very responsive to any suggestions, and lots of fun to be around. My girls particularly enjoyed the BBQ and movie on the beach, Henna tattoos, Parasailing, an scuba introduction in the pool.

We stayed in a family suit near the lap pool. Other reviews talk about this being a quiet area, but I think that all the accommodation is very cleverly laid out and all areas feel private. We were a little walk from the main pool and restaurants, but en route to our room was the spa, chip and putt golf, and kids club - so this worked well for us.

The spa is out of this world. We all enjoyed various treatments through out our stay, and the kids pedicure was a real highlight for the girls.

The customer service staff at the desks in reception are exceptional and were always available to help. It was so lovely to be able to sit down and discuss ideas for activities etc. They all amazingly remembered our names from day one.

If I have one area where I think they could improve it would be the lunchtime food service around the pool and on the beach. On most occasions when we ordered something for the children (pizza's/burgers/ sandwiches etc) it took around an hour to arrive. After the first few days we just factored this into our calculations and did not wait for them to be starving before ordering.

Over all a very memorable 8 days and one which we hope to repeat in the coming years.
