“Good food and views, overpriced drinks, outdated bathrooms”
Reviewed 7 September 2012

The Sands hotel enjoys a great location with amazing views from every room. The pool area, probably recently updated, is very impressive with a large infinity pool and 28 degrees water temperature. The breakfast and dinner are suprisingly good offering a good choice of high quality food from a buffet. We were however disappointed by the 500-600% markup on poor quality wine by glass and lack of choice. Suffice to say we ordered once and not again. The staff was overall friendly but at times we felt we were being told where to sit for dinner rather than being treated as guests. The hotel offers many leisure activities for free but if you want to rent bicycles these are at charge. Water skiing was not possible due the weather every day for a week. One starts to wonder if this was really due to weather or rather due to cost reduction ( waterskiing was free). The room is average size and we had one on the ground floor which was convenient (no stairs) but less privacy (other guests can look inside). The bathrooms are outdated and could do with a renovation. On the other hand one gets both bathtub and shower as well as a large dressing room. The Sands is a very pleasant hotel in a very good location and spectacular views. It could become fantastic if they updated the rooms, bathrooms, trained their staff in courtesy and improve wine pricing and selection.

Room Tip: Ground floor for convenience, upper floor for privacy, rooms with higher numbers tend to be farther...

This is a good hotel - superb situation with a good beach area, stunning views and beautiful sunsets. Rooms were spacious and attractive with pleasant balconies and the advantage of coffee-making facilities. More storage space (ie drawers) would have been useful, but this is a minor point. Service was excellent, with polite, welcoming, responsive and helpful staff at all levels. Our only complaint - and the reason why this review gets only 4 stars - was the food. Breakfast and bar food were good, but we were disappointed by the quality of food served in the main restaurant, especially given its cost. As a non-meat-eater I found the choice just about sufficient (especially starters), but the quality of some dishes was poor - eg risotto and a chickpea curry that were too salty to eat and soggy polenta. Location-wise, although the setting is wonderful, it's too far to walk to Flic-en-Flac, so a car or taxi is needed to go to restaurants in the town - we paid Rs500 (about £4)for a return taxi - and it was well worth it!

The Sands Resort & Spa is mind blowing. On arrival you are swept off your feet, with towels to freshen up, fruit cocktails and champagne at your fingertips, conceirge of luggage and shown to your room and shown around. The Hotel itself is very well maintained with very friendly members of staff that are always happy to help. The room was very spacious and we were on the top floor which had a very beautiful view with our personal balcony, I couldn't get over the two sink basins so we had our own, the shower as well as the bath tub and walk in wardrobe...very very spacious. The facilities provided within the resort and in the hotel room were fantastic, I would not change a thing. I did not like anything that was on TV, a DVD player with a range of DVD's was sent up to my room. I had special diet requirements and a lot of care was taken by the staff to ensure that this was met at all times, which made you feel special. It's a resort for all types of holidays, we were on honeymoon and felt comfortable for the whole duration of stay, it's nice and intimate, we had a special honeymoon evening meal on the beach which came with our package which was a personalised service. We stayed here half board and the range of breakfast and evening meals were fantastic, the days we were at the resort which was all the evenings there was always something different to eat, with foods from all over the world. The lunchtime menu is reasonably priced and you can order lunches to your room, on the beach. The Beach and the Infinity pool are what makes your stay complete, was always kept clean and the activities provided at the Boat House kept you busy. Various other sports facilities are provided. The Spa and Sauna is lovely. I am actually going to stop as there is so much to say about the resort, you will only appreciate how lovely Mauritius is when you stay in Flic en Flac at the Sand's resort. We got on a bus which is a short walk from the resort into Flic en Flac to have a wonder and do some shopping. When checking out, they allowed us to stay in the room till our transport for the airport came and offered a free cocktail while we were waiting. So the service overall from arrival to departure is outstanding!!!

Room Tip: A room on the top floor, which is 3rd is lovely. As your out the way and have a lovely view through...

We stayed at resort in May, overall a lovely holiday ideal for couples of all ages. Rooms are spacious and clean, we were lucky enough to have a room on the left hand side of the hotel and located in the end block, views beautiful and service excellent. Overall rooms are comfortable for a two week stay, we also enjoyed samples each evening of the food available at the restaurant.

Spa at the hotel is fantastic, treatments very good value and it's nice to share a massage with your loved one!

Gym is also very good, often when you travel aboard you tend to fine the equipment dated ( not the case here) there are also a number of free activities available during the day.

Food- generally good, although you do get a bit fed up after two weeks but guess that's the same wherever you go unless you dine a la carte. There were times when arriving at the buffet restaurant we found that food serving trays were not topped up and often has to wait 10 minutes for food to arrive.

We found from speaking to others that the restaurant was cleared ready for breakfast with 1 hr plus of service still to go. This was generally the case in the evenings when restaurant manager was not on duty. We found breakfast to be of no issue, great choice and helpful staff. Wine list is of good quality that's if you don't mind spending a bit of cash.

Drinks - generally expensive at all hotels in Mauritius but a good choice available at the hotel.

Comments were raised at end of stay and the manager responded accordingly.

Entertainment - there are nightly shows in the bar which were ok. Mostly music shows were offered it would have been nice one night to offer a musical or play just something a bit different.

Recommend you take a walk into town along the beach while the sun is going down, take some cash and have a drink in Flic en Flac before taking a cab back to the hotel.

Recommend hiring a car to go out and about and vsit the island, reception team are happy to assist.

Overall a good choice and recommend as a 4star choice of stay.

It always intrigues me when a hotel receives overwhelming excellent ratings with people waxing lyrical and writing at length about their stay and then the reviews are interspersed with an occasional counter experience and you begin to wonder whether this is the same hotel. Viewpoints are always coloured by personal circumstances and expectations, and measured against what one considers are your own ‘norms’ (i.e. the correct ones!) and will differ from those of others. In writing a review I always try to apply the maxim ‘what is reasonable in the circumstances’.
Overall a fair-minded person could not fault the Sands Hotel. Any problems I had were always attended to quickly by staff. Sometimes things are not a 100%, for instance birds do come quickly to the tables at breakfast time – quite pretty ones in fact – and you do need to cover plates etc. if you are on your own as I was to prevent them trampling all over your breakfast. A previous comment that amused me was ‘no elevator for the third floor’ – the word EXERCISE springs to mind, or if there are health issues, then taking a room on the ground floor is the solution. You could argue that drinks are expensive as some have done but the Sands is a more expensive hotel and the solution lies in purchasing supplies at the local supermarket, which you can bring back to your room.
The accommodation has been described in detail elsewhere, and yes, the rooms are very nice indeed, so I shall make no further comment. The food was fine but not everything was to my taste – I did not expect it to be – but I was never forced to leave the evening buffet without eating something that I liked.
Some reference has been made to noise – if you listened carefully you could hear music late at night but also you could enjoy the noise of croaking frogs, and if you listened very carefully you could hear the noise occasionally of animals in the distance which has been referred to in one review, but you had to listen hard.
Yes, the Wi-Fi internet connection is patchy – a little frustrating – but go and sit outside the fitness room and then no problem at all with the Wi-Fi signal and after all the connection is free.
All in all I enjoyed the relaxation of two week’s stay at the Sands. I could laze on the beach, enjoy the fabulous scenery, swim in the infinity pool and watch the world go by – a taste of paradise!

Room Tip: Head for the second floor, to the left as you face the sea - no-one above you to shift furniture &am...
