Sands Suites Resort & Spa
Ranked #1 of 18 Hotels in Flic En Flac
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 25 March 2012

My wife and I spent two weeks at the Sands in March 2012. It was our second stay at this hotel forming the southern end of the quite large series of hotels located at Flic en Flac. Its immediate neighbour is the luxurious Maradiva (which has, by the way, the same owner). The Sands has a most beautiful position across Tamarine bay with mount Tamarine immediately before your eyes and the Morne mountain greeting a little bit farther from the south.

The rooms are spacious. On the one side of the entrance you will find the bath with bathtub, two wash-basins, separate shower and separate WC; and, above all, a roomy walk in closet. When you ask for a sufficient number of coat hooks, you will feel quite comfortable when changing your garments -- all will be at hand. On the other side of the entrance you have a well-equipped living with a large bed and still lots of space before the balcony. Air conditioning is individual, i.e. you may adjust the temperature to your personal needs (20 or even 21 degrees Celsius will do). House- and room-keeping is irreproachable.

Food is OK, if perhaps not always excellent – but this depends on individual taste and preferences.

There is quite one major problem. Providing a Wifi connection can be seen as standard in better hotels nowadays. In most of them it is even complimentary (there may be exceptions in Switzerland or France). Now, in principle, the Sands offers such a complimentary Wifi service in your room and even at the beach. The only problem is that frequently it is down, be it on behalf of too many users logged in, be it because the server itself is down. Be that as it may, more often than not you have to go to the reception asking for the server to be restarted -- which seems to require the presence of an ‘IT manager’. This can be an annoying experience.

Snorkelling possibilities are quite well as soon as you leave the swimming area sheltered by rocks arranged in a half circle facing the beach, heading about 100 m for the left shoulder of mount Tamarine. There are three small buoys visible, the best region being the space between the first and the second to the left. During high tide you can swim there on the crest of the barrier. There we never got bothered by currents, even swimming without fins. For snorkelling you may also use the service of the boat-house which brings you twice a day to another place on the other side of the barrier.

Boats and kayaks are OK. We observed a quite attentive and very busy rescue service, e.g., for surfboarders.

Dancing is possible every night starting from about 8.30 p.m. The quality of the bands is quite different, though. Some play only music of a soporific kind permitting you nothing but a monotonous blues. Most of the others play their songs way too quick, the typical rhythm of their keyboard machinery being 60 bars per minute. (A 45 bars Jive over three minutes can be considered as competitive sport.) There will be only few people venturing onto the floor, though, more than two pairs of dancers being rather seldom. So in case you dance, you mostly will have the floor for yourself. And it will tend to be a physical challenge for you and your partner, anyway.

The Sands is recommendable and fully worth the money you spend.

Dear Mr. Lahjakas,

It is with immense pleasure that we have read your detailed review on the Trip advisor. The Sands team wishes to thank you for devoting your precious time to give us your feedback. Your loyalty to the Sands is highly appreciated and we value your comments.

Thank you for mentioning the wifi. We are aware of the irregularity of the wifi reception and the IT team is actively working on it so as to ensure an homogeneous and stable coverage across the whole premises. The evening entertainment is quite varied throughout the week with a different band every night, each one with a different style and there are also shows like the sega and the Indian Dance shows.

Thank you again for your valuable contribution to the Sands on the Trip Advisor and we all look forward to welcome you for a third time among us.

Warm regards,

Patrick,
Resident Manager.

Our 10 day holiday at Sands Resort Mauritius exceeded our expectations. The photos on the website indicated that the location would be idyllic and it was - we felt as though we were living in a postcard. We were made welcome from our arrival, and appreciated the many thoughtful personal touches and treats throughout our stay.

Even though the hotel was nearly at full capacity, it never seemed crowded. The grounds were attractive, well looked after, full of bird life, and would have been all the more colourful, if many of the blooms had not been picked early each morning to be used for various decorations and celebrations later that day. We appreciated the resort being the last along the beach front, meaning very few passers-by on the beach (apart from the occasional horse rider), and having immediate access to the adjacent natural woodland and coastal pathway (shame this public land was so spoilt with litter and rubbish).

We were on the top (3rd) floor in the Tamarind wing, which meant it was quiet. If we had been a level lower we would have been able to see the sea, however, we did enjoy looking out through the top of the palm trees. Our room was spacious and well appointed. It was regularly well cleaned at our convenience and a broken light bulb was immediately attended to.

The staff were excellent - friendly and helpful. The food was varied and the fresh fruit at breakfast time was lovely. The evening buffets were themed, giving variety each evening, with something for every taste. It was our wedding anniversary and also my birthday during the time we were there, and the Sands kindly provided a cake for each occasion, with associated firework display on top. It was a perfect setting for such celebrations.

The sea was very warm, but we were glad we had been warned to wear reef shoes, as there was a lot of dead coral on the sea floor which was most unpleasant to walk on bare footed. Unfortunately the coral reef nearby was very much in decline, but there still were some fish to be seen. A lot of the watersports were free and the staff at the Boat house very obliging and friendly. We took advantage of the free hamman and sauna and will not forget our special hour's walk with a tiger and lion at the nearby safari park, organised by marvellous Melvin.

It was a holiday in paradise for us and we hope to return some time.

Dear Ric and Carine M,

Thank you so much for your wonderful review on the Trip Advisor. We are all very glad to read that you were fully satisfied with your stay with us and we loved your expression ‘we felt as though we were living in a postcard’. We also appreciate your detailed description about the atmosphere and environment within which the Sands is impregnated.

Rest assured that the palm leaves and coconut leaves are regularly trimmed so as to allow our guests from higher floor rooms to be able to enjoy the sea and garden view. It is also a real pleasure for us to celebrate any important occasions of our guests be it birthday or wedding anniversaries. We are happy to read that you liked our offering of a cake on the occasion of your birthday.

Melvin, our concierge send you his best regards. Thank you again for providing us with your valuable comments which will surely benefit other Trip Advisor readers.

The whole Sands team wishes to welcome you back at Sands when you will be visiting the island again.

Warmest regards,

Patrick,
Resident Manager.

We had fanstastic outsanding holidays at the Sands Resort. Excellent and personal service, staff taking care of everything, great food, beautifully located. You can chose amongst sportive activities and leisure, or get around to see interesting spots of the island. We wished to have more than 2 weeks time....and will be back!

Had two very pleasant weeks stay here last November, after having an unpleasant couple of years my wife and I needed somewhere that was away from it all and was of a high standard both in terms of accommodation and customer care. The Sands surpassed our expectations on all counts. A truly superb experience, no gripes whatsoever. The staff are not only a credit to the Sands but to Mauritius as well.
Would recommend it to anyone who is a diserning traveler.
Thank you to everyone at the Sands.

The Sands Resort Mauritius has just given us the very best holiday ever. Yes I am aware of how big a call this is but it is true. We decided to spend my wife's 50th Birthday at the Sands, and the whole experience from start to finish has been awesome.
We would rate the service as off the chart, along with value for money, very well maintained, spotlessly clean and the food was super. We also are convinced that the Sands is very capable in maintaining this high standard as this was the 2nd trip in 7 months. The benchmark for the overhaul quality of a resort style set up in Mauritius is high, but The Sands manage to be well above this standard of excellence.
The one very, very special quality at the Sands is the dedication of ALL its staff. The attention they possess to detail is just short of being divine, (and I say just short only because I have not yet taken the stairway to heaven) from the time you get up in the morning to the time you go to bed the staff work tirelessly to make you very, very comfortable.

Please don't take my word for it, give it a go...............you WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.
