“Peace on earth...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 February 2012

This is a very late review. We were here in May 2011 and the island is about 30 mins away from Male via speedboat. Journey to the island was rough as the it was windy that day and the seas were rough. Once we got to the island, it was magical. White sandy beaches, blue clear waters and it was so peaceful. We were ushered to villa 35, it was a beachfront villa, room was relatively big, free wifi access, no TV (which was very good to spend time with each other), and a jacuzzi in the rear of the villa, next to the doorway. Villas were very comfortable to sleep in and just seeing the waves crashing out in front of us was very comforting. Snorkelling in the island was a hit and miss affair, the reefs are slightly further out and once you are there, its pretty. If you have the time, go to the reef at Angsana, the sister property, the reefs are alot closer to shore and we saw more fishes there as well, we even saw a black tip shark barely 4 metres from us and that was a very nice experience.

Feeding the stingrays and turtle was a good experience, seeing how conservation is being done and also learning about the marine eco system was educational. Food is a buffet affair, there is no dress code and there is a certain time where we would go to the common meal area to have our meals. Meals are good, have to pay for beverages. Spa is excellent! Its by far the best spa that we have ever tried, and Banyan Tree Spa has clearly lifted the standards sky high!

This place is gorgeous, we spent 5 days here, didnt make it for the dinner on a deserted island as it had strong winds. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, its very peaceful and a good place to spend with your loved ones.

Having read previous reviews was a bit concerned we would be in a minority, and so it proved. The majority of guests were Chinese/Japanese. My main problem with this were the gentlemen's regular loud throat/nose clearing, usually whilst we were eating. We also didn't appreciate that it was Chinese New year while we were there, which could also explain the large groups.
That apart the hotel was lovely. We stepped off the plane at Male and were stepping onto a speedboat within half an hour. 25 minutes later we were welcomed onto the island. Room was nice, if a little weird having the bed in the middle of the room. All staff were brilliant, welcoming and efficient. Eager to help and resolve problems, we couldnt get the ipod dock to work, they changed the whole unit. Wi Fi in rooms was free and fast. Lovely touches like little presents left on bed after turndown service.
Food was amazing, we were on full board, one night I didnt fancy the meal meal choices, so they asked what I would like and delivered it, amazing. Lunches included a made to measure salad bar.
The marine biologist, a lovely italian lady, Marta I think, was brilliant. We saw the baby turtles, watched them feeding the manta rays every night at 5pm. I went diving and was thorughly impressed by the professional way the dive shop was run. Having dived in many resorts this was the best run I have ever dived with.
Highlights were the free cocktail party on the beach for chinese new year, watching the sharks around the pier at night, the vast variety of sealife around the reef and the lovely staff.

The first sight of the island from the speed boat from the airport (30 minutes) took our breath away. It was our first visit to the Maldives, and we wanted Peace. We got it. The long jetty was surrounded with so many beautiful reef fish and the coral sand was blinding. The welcome was warm and so friendly, and since It only takes 10 minutes to walk completely around Vabbinfaru, our villa was 250 metres from the front desk - and immediately we saw it, we knew that we would have perfect relaxation for our two weeks.
The villas are very well equipped, and it's worth the extra to have a deluxe beachfront villa, with its beach pavillion, sun loungers, jacuzzi and even lilos. The bedroom was so atmospheric, and the insense and mood music - and no TV - made for a remarkably romantic experience, even at our ages! The only problem was that the wardrobe was very small, but only because we brought far too many clothes, as we were used to hotels where there was a strict dress code in the dining rooms. At the Banyan Tree, there's a bare foot policy, and the coral sand is on the floors throughout. You can wear, within reason, what you want at all meals, and we used less than half the clothes we brought.
The staff were so attentive - without being pushy - friendly and keen to help. The food was superb - in the evening, fine dining under the palms. A good choice at each meal, and good variety too throughout our stay. The only negative is the breathtaking price of wines and spirits - but we probably came away healthier as a result.
Tips - take an iPad (there's free access in each room) and there's an iPod dock and a good CD system. There are 8 page daily hotel newspapers in most languages, but with no TVs, a good newspaper app. is helpful. Plugs are UK and continental. As for nationalities, we reckon that of the 90 guests, there were about 70% Chinese, Japanese, Korean, 25% French, Italian, German, and 5% British, Australian, American. Young children seemed to be tolerated, and were never a problem. Also, try to be on the Western side - more beach, but further from the reef.
The beach is fabulous, and the sea so clear, with 44 species of reef fish, we were told during one of the lectures, which are free and a must. Daily feeding of the lovely stingrays (perfectly safe - as are the reef sharks and turtles) is a real experience on this nature friendly island that actually builds coral to help replace any damaged by time and humans. The Dive Centre provides masks, snorkels and flippers free for your whole stay.
As can be seen, we loved Vabbinfaru, a will go back again. It has stopped us looking elsewhere.

Room Tip: As we have said, we prefer the western side, but if you want to be closer to the fish, or have a bea...

Its all been said...but I felt compelled to add my thoughts to all the superlatives that have been written.
We have found a most special place. The staff are second to none; with a genuine care and thoughtfulness that can not be forced.
Yes this is a 5 star island; I will not use the term resort as it is so much more than that. There is so much attention to detail. Your Villa provides all those little things that you wished that you had remembered to pack..even down to a lovely beach bag and beach flip flops
The food is without exception excellant ,even to the point where you can request a roast dinner if you felt a desperate need. But to be honest there is so much choice , in the 2 plus weeks that we stayed we saw little on the menu that was repeated.
This Island is unspoilt and is all the more special for that...just enjoy the nightly feeding of the Sting Rays accompanied by the Mario the resident Stork whom you can set your watch by..not that you would be wearing one.
Thats it writing this short review has clarified for me what made this our best ever holiday.
We left our watches on the jetty and laptops and I phones to gather dust.
No shoes , No worries just relax.....................

It's amazing to swim with all the beautiful coral & coral fishes. I need a h2o prove camera the next time round. It's a perfect place for couples, a romantic and relaxing get away. u need not bring much as most of the stuff is provided. Things like make-up removed ( I gotta give a thump for that).
When u r in any banyan tree u gotta go for the massage ... I heard its really famous !
