“Sweet Sojourn”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 March 2012

When my husband and I decided to take a short weekend getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life, we looked up a number of places that would give us the complete relaxation we both needed. We found Tanjong Jara Resort! It was not coincidence but fate that led us to this remarkable place. We found a toll-free number to call to make our reservations and on a Sunday, someone answered our prayers and before we know it, we were packing our suitcases to head out to the east coast of Malaysia in search of something wonderful.

Upon arrival at the resort, we were warmly welcomed by Mr. Kumar and the concierge team. Later we were shown to our room and much to our delight; we were upgraded to the Serambi room instead of Bumbung as per our booking. All this at no extra cost. The Serambi room is so spacious and comfortable with complete amenities in the bath and mini-bar. It is on the ground floor with a spacious verandah where we could relax and read or just listen to the birds chirping all day against the background of waves crashing onto the shore.

There are two restaurants and a pool bar / outdoor dining area that cater to all guests. We thoroughly enjoyed a private steamboat on our last evening al fresco complete with 5-star service from F&B staff. At the Di Atas Sungei restaurant, we had an experience that we will remember for a long time when we were asked what we wanted to eat by the walking and talking chef because there is no written menu. The other restaurant, Nelayan, is located at the far end of the resort. It was here during a storm when we had our taste of fine dining and winds howling away and a group of young ladies serenading their friend who was about to get married.

At the Spa Village, we booked for a one-hour massage together and found the experience to be very relaxing at the capable hands of Pak Yah and Sue. They made us feel comfortable and completely rejuvenated after the session - so much so that we wanted more!
We also discovered that at the resort, there were a multitude of activities ranging from morning exercises to biking, walks up Jara Hill, souvenir shopping, batik painting, tours of Dungun town, etc. available for the adventurous guests. On Saturdays, the resort also organizes a series of activities depicting Kampong Life. Food and drinks are available at no charge. The management and staff are always available to assist guests. Even the GM, Peter Neto, is seen mingling with guests and making everyone feel welcomed.

This has been the best weekend getaway we have ever had in Malaysia. Thanks to the wonderful team at Tanjong Jara Resort. To quote Mark Twain, "Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been." Keep smiling!

Room Tip: Serambi rooms are on the ground and spacious with a verandah and day bed

Dear Mr and Mrs CPhun

Thank you so much for your inspired comments, I am delighted you had such a wonderful stay with us at Tanjong Jara Resort and have taken the time to share your experience in this website.

Since you have quoted Mark Twain, I thought I could add a second less known quote of his: 'Hotels are the only proper places for lecturers. When I am ill-natured I so enjoy the freedom of a hotel where I can ring up a domestic and give him a quarter and then break furniture over him.'

It was a pleasure meeting you and I am looking forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future. Please feel free to contact me directly if I may be of assistance in making the reservation.

Yours truly

What a fantastic place to stay, we've not been to Malaysia before and this was the highlight of a superb trip. The service was brilliant, each and every member of staff could be singled out for excellent service and beautiful smiles, it's great to really feel so welcome. We ate in the main restaurant each evening as we just loved 'Chef Anne' coming to the table to recommend the days specials, each and every meal was excellent and the Tempura Calamari was the best ever.
The bedrooms are set in the beautiful grounds and are of a really high standard, we loved the fact that robes and flip flops were provided for going down to the beach and on the loungers near the pool and beach fresh towels were provided each day. The beach is amazing, we spent ages swimming in the lovely warm sea. It was just at the end of the monsoon season when we went so the sea was quite rough, but for me this made it even better! Couldn't believe how few people were on the beach or swimming in the sea. The pools looked good but we never used them as why would you when there is a crystal blue warm sea to swim in?? Some amazing wild life to see as well as beutiful plants and trees. We loved the fact that we were there when it was quiet as it gave us the opportunity for a much needed relax. We couldn't have asked for more, a huge thanks to all the staff for making this such a memorable stay.

Me and my family have gone to this resort for the past 6 years and now have gone around 10 times in total! There is a good variety of food selection with a western, seafood, buffet, and in the evening with the set menu which even then has multiple choices! The rooms also vary a bit but are all with gorgeous bedrooms and bathrooms which include numerous sinks, a shower and a bath often with salts to make the relaxing experience even better! The spa is perfect and even the full body massages (which I'm not usually a fan of) are a joy. If you come here at the right time o the year, you can also go to an amazing little island not far away called Tengul where my the snorkeling is so incredible at the right time that my friend said it easily is in the same league as the great barrier reef! with two pools, a gym, spa, such great and inventive chefs and staff how can you not want to visit this rustic delight!

Tanjong Jara Resort is a nice resort on a large acreage in a beautiful location. However the final impression to me is only reasonable, due to a combination of little things. We arrived by car to find the security gate bar down and the guard absent. We looked elsewhere, but returned to the gate to find the guard had returned. The welcome was good and the staff friendly and helpful. We went to the room but the staff couldn't open the door. A second staff member was called who forced the sticking door open. The front door use a strange multi-turn lock and a small door handle that is a pinch point.
There is no electronic card entry or smart power disconnect system, so we left the room with most of the lights on - not very energy conscientious.
We couldn't find instructions for the satellite TV remotes and ended up screwing up the settings. The technician was called to fix this up.
The room was large with wonderful hardwood floors, with a big bed and good large bathroom. However all the lighting switches are some distance from the bed, apart from two oversize bedlamps. While reaching for my bedlamp, I bumped a sharp edged post next to the lamp & cut my forehead.
The large size of the resort means that there is no WiFi in the room.
Dinner at the Di Atas Sungei restaurant (one of two restaurants) was good for me, but the Singapore girlfriend complained that the local dish (chicken rendang) was not as it should be (the gravy/sauce was watery, not a paste). I wasn't happy that the sliced papaya fruit was not cut well and still contained seeds and stringy bits.
The restaurant staff seated us but then forgot us. We had to call the Senior Waitress over to take our drinks order, which took a long time time. There are lots of mosquitos around and it took a while for the requested mosquito coil to arrive. Things improved significantly when Chef Anne appeared. As others have mentioned, she is a major asset to the resort.
The signposts are a little vague and we got lost a couple of times trying to find the reception area.
The beach is great with numerous seashells washed up on the beach. However there is also some plastic waste. The larger plastic items and driftwood are collected from the beach each morning, but there was still a lot of smaller plastic items that were not collected.
The resort buildings are made primarily from local hardwood in the style of Malay royal timber palaces. This is very attractive, but some of the issues of timber (sticky doors, shutters that won't shut, white ant damage etc) are present.
The breakfast is a bit confusing, due to a mix of buffet and menu items. The quality is good, but again the papaya wasn't cut properly and contained seeds.
The resort is a little bit dated now. The remoteness from an airport and other resorts and buildings is great if you want peace and quiet, but there isn't much else to do or see in the area and travel time to Kuantan airport is significant.
In summary, the resort is very good, and is probably the best on the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia. However our experience was spoilt by a combination of small service problems and issues. We tend to prefer hotels in busier locations that have more attractions, services and restaurants nearby. Read some other recent reviews to determine whether Tanjong Jara is your cup of tea.

We read the reviews before we stayed at TJ and were looking forward to experiencing the resort and all it had to offer. We witnessed Kenneth T's proposal and can confirm that the staff certainly pulled out all the stops and made the occasion very special. There is really nothing that we can add to all the reviews except to say a very big thank you to ALL the staff. We can only remember the names of a few - Peter, Antonella (sorry for the spelling!), Kumar, Sue and the girls in the spa village who managed to iron out our backs! A special thanks to Chef Ann - it really showed when you took a night off! We also have a very big thank you to Liza for her towel dexterity! We cannot remember another resort where everyone addresses you by name and I have a very, very big thank you to everyone who helped 'Mr David' to finally chill out! We only wish that we were young enough to face more long haul and come to be pampered again, but sadly we are not likely to return. The memories, however, will last forever. Thank you.

Dear David and Josephine

The team was very happy to have you stay with with us and for their names (mine included) being mentioned on this website. It is very rewarding to hear back from guests and most specially those who everyone in the resort will remember for a long time to come. Malaysia may be far from the UK, however, may I suggest a short stop half way through the journey? The trip will seem so much shorter then. We certainly hope to welcome you back in the future.

Warmest regards

Peter Neto
