“Nice and cozy!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 May 2012

We stayed in one of the chalets. It was very cozy with a nice glass-panelled view of the beach from just beside our bed. Clean beach and not overly crowded, it's pretty relaxing to stroll along the coastline... Food aplenty at the stalls next door, with 7-Eleven just around the corner.

Room Tip: Get a chalet. It fits 2 adults and a child.

Stayed for 2 nights recently as part of a trip around Sarawak and Sabah. The hotel rooms were clean and pleasant. There are lots of different types of room depends on cost, so have a look. The facilities were good, and the sea food restaurant was nice - although we did eat in the main restaurant one night and the food was decidedly average. Nice pool and lovely beach. Great sunsets! BUT remember this hotel is approx. 45 mins taxi ride from Kuching city, so you can't really just pop to the city for dinner or a few drinks.

Room Tip: Have a look around - lots of different types available.

A really lovely hotel with a great location and excellent staff. We had a fantastic time and were really well looked after by the fantastic staff. The room we stayed in was a little dated but was clean and comfortable and was an excellent price. The only thing which was a downside was some of the miserable rude other guests but thats not the hotels fault.

Room Tip: Pay a bit extra and stay in a suite or some of the beach side rooms look more modern.

We recently spent a week at Damai Beach Resort in April. Really, we had 'run of the joint' during the week. There was a handful of guests at any one time, whether in the cafe, the pools, table tennis, chess etc. The staff are wonderful. Friendly, kind and genuinely interested.
Our room- 2 chalets overlooking the beach with connecting door, one for us with a king bed, and one for the kids with double beds (2). In each room the air con was super efficient, there were large tv's, fridge, tea/coffee making facilities, table and chairs, complimentary bottled water every day, clean bathrooms with a shower over the bath, drying line, hair dryer, complmentary supplies each day. In the parents' suite there was a lounge, chair and table, as well as a desk. Plenty of space to put clothes away and store cases. We latched and locked the kid's door and entered and left units through our chalet. Housekeeping kept our room clean, often being cleaned by the time we got back from breakfast.
Services- can buy prepaid internet cards from reception. I put my iphone in air plane mode, logged into wireless to text family with imessage and browse internet etc. Remember to log out of session, this way a 24 hour card can last 3 days. Laundry- we sent clothes off to be laundered by hotel laundry, though not cheap by Malaysian standards, cheap by Australian, and super efficient. Clothes sent off at 10 am were returned early in afternoon. After Caving with 'Kuching caving' this service was highly beneficial!!! Activities- giant chess set (always available), bicycles and kayaks for hire (very cheap), Malaysian marble game (staff will sit with you and teach how to play), There is mini golf around the hotel, golf clubs are free from the recreation counter, At the recreation counter there are daily activities twice a day, and coconuts for sale (these are efficiently opened ready for consumption! There are 2 pools, one in main hotel section, the other up the cliff (the shuttle will run you up and back) and a kiddie pool. Towels are available from poolside with a card given at check in. Meals are available at the top pool via phone call, at the main pool there is a swim up bar with stools. We had a lovely snack there of juices (all the juices are really good and come in a small carafe), wedges, calamari and curry puffs.
Food- we had many meals at the resort. They were all good. Again, not the cheapest by Malaysian standards, but cheap by Aussie standards. There is the Damai Central - 5 minute walk from the resort, which has fabulous food at the food court from 3 ringgit (about $1 Aussie). Breakfast at Damai was an extra for us, but the kids ate for half price. So for $30 Aussie 2 adults and 2 kids ate unlimited buffet. Breakfast was delicious. Asian, continental and western style food. The waffles are delicious with hot chocolate sauce! The staff were super efficient with taking dirty plates, topping up the coffee and offering advice on anything and everything when chatting. We were always seated promptly, and the bill bought to us for signing promptly.
Transport- The hotel runs a shuttle service where they will pick you up and return to airport (120 ringgit each way - $40 AUSD) Organise this before you leave home. The shuttle always operates throughout the day at certain times into Kuching (about a 45 minute drive) and back again, with the last trip at 10 pm from town back to the resort. Booking a return trip is cheaper than 2 one ways. If visiting the Sunday Market in Kuching, let the concierge know and the shuttle will drop off and pick up from the market near KFC if you ask. Sunday markets are great!! Don't miss them, from Saturday lunch to Sunday lunch.
There is a Matahari tour office in the lobby, we booked a Semmeggoh/Longhouse tour with them and Bako National Park. Both were very good. There is a convenience store open to 9 pm, a bar with pool table, and a Seafood restaurant. There is a kids club which our kids weren't interested in, as it was a little tired and not wll equipped for their ages (7 and 10) The play ground was basic. There is a gym, also a little tired. To be honest, with Mt Santubong behind the resort, a climb up this is all the exercise you need!
To sum up, IF you want a 5 star hotel, don't stay here. BUT if you want a laid back, relaxed, friendly, clean and fun hotel for kids, then stay here.. The weekends sees it come alive with locals coming and local businesses using it for conferences etc. It is a whole different side of Damai, which we enjoyed seeing.

managing everyone's expectations, yes its dated. Yes, the weekends are full of day trippers.
But, the staff try their best : )
We had flowers in the villa. The resident band singing our requests. Even the other guests are nice. They help take pictures for us at the beautiful beach.
Yes, sunset at the beach was just awesome.

Room Tip: Baruk suite
