We stayed at this place for one night after paying for five. It was the worst hotel experience. We had been to Vietnam the previous two weeks and thought we would unwind and treat ourselves in a luxury stay, which the hotel's photos suggest.

The hotel is basically a suburban house set amongst industrial premises situated on a busy dual carriageway. The owner has added sleepouts and additions, which are basically bad DIY attempts, to try and make a business.

We booked also based on write ups on websites. I am really not sure who writes these. The place was dirty and amateur. Our faces dropped as we approached the hotel when we saw it's location. ..nowhere near a beach, mountain, decent restaurant. ..although if you want want your car or motorbike fixed there were plenty of places over the road to go to !

There was a small home made pool and waterfall and a jacuzzi which had a sign" clothing optional" . This was a little creepy and sickened my partner who is pretty liberal. The room was damp and smelled. It overlooked the main road and a neighbours' house . The stairs and walkways were wooden and makeshift.

The downstairs bar area was busy with local youths smoking and basically "hanging out". This was meant to be a holiday hotel not a youth club. We were the only people staying there.

The place was awful. It was amateur. We decided to check out the next morning and go elsewhere. We lost $400 as the owner refused to refund us. It was better losing this than having to stay another minute.

We have travelled extensively throughout Asia and Malaysia and have never experienced anything so dreadful.

Location is some 15-20 mins drive from the town centre; 20-25 Ringgits by taxi.
The Secret Sanctuary is alongside a main road and traffic noise at night is a problem in at least one room. There is also noise from the popular bar and restaurant and the music played there, though to be fair Cyril the owner did offer to turn the music down.
The rooms are simple and very dark but have character, though ours (all 3 of them) didn't seem to be cleaned once during our stay and the bed linen is basic.
Water features - ponds, pools, waterfalls and so on - are everywhere. Which is nice, but the mosquitoes that go with them are not - the most mosquito problem we had during our entire 2 weeks in Borneo.
The owners try to keep the mosquito numbers down with coils and spray, and they provide free repellent, but the mosquitoes will still bite. As will whatever woke me up in agony in the middle of the night by inflicting a very painful blood-drawing double puncture wound in my arm which luckily didn't yet develop into anything else more serious. Subsequent internet research suggests the culprit may have been a spider. It was after this that we finally decided to check out early. A shame because the owners are friendly and helpful (although they didn't offer a refund nor did Cyril even asked us why we are leaving early, it was his wife/ partner that did...), the food is OK and the staff are keen to be of assistance.
The self-service bar concept works well and there are some good eating places nearby, as well as an interesting small park 10 minutes walk away that has monkeys and a popular jogging track.
Overall, with a few small improvements like proper bedding, fixing doors, better lighting, cushions for chairs, and some more rigorous cleaning and pest control, the Secret Sanctuary would be a good choice for those who can easily adapt to a more alternative accommodation experience.
But even then would still only provide value for money at half the price we were charged.

Thank you for review . We are having year end promotional rate rite now . For Budget traveler or solo traveler who love alternative life style please contact me directly .I might be able to give you a very special rate specially for thus like minded people who love nature and simplicity .
For House keeping , our crew usually need to get your permission to enter your room . Usually the guest will let us know if they need their towel change of room to tidy up . We are most happy to do so .
Our room is basic with large air con unit and balcony for private sun bath . My design is base on basic and simple . Most room have two king size beds. One bed is very soft and the other bed usually is organic coconut fiber which is good for our back . Room have rotan chair and table. wall is made out of original mountain bamboo like old time .
All room have mosquitoes netting before you sleep u can put down and spray the mosquitoes repellent . So that u are inside the romantic bed and all the mozzy is dead .
I am sorry about the rate that i charge because i try not to encourage local people come here just for doing some hanky panky business . Plus we need to survive from this little property of 8 to 10 rooms . we can cater for 30 guests at one time but i have to sleep at the hammock outside ( i dont mind ) .By the way, I don have any wife or any partner yet . I hope one sunshine day some special one will come this way check in and never check out . Just like hotel California. To contact me you can go to facebook The Secret Sanctuary or The Secret Sanctuary Gastro-lounge or Cyril Lim .

I hope the rich will help the poor . For thus who need lower rate pls chat with me at facebook . for thus who are rich pls pay double . I always love Robin Hood . Sincerely Cyril lim . With lots of love to you and your beautiful family .

We stayed in Cyril's place for three nights. There is so much thought put into the decor and design of this place which makes it a really unique and out of the ordinary place to stay. Our room was quirky and comfortable and the pool/hammocks/waterfall all very enticing. The food was very good and the bar area was really cool. I wouldn't however call this a sanctuary and I think Cyril needs to reconsider calling it this. There are locals in using the pool the whole time so the place can be quite noisy with kids playing until late at night. We found it very difficult to relax. There is very little privacy here as there are so many people coming and going in such a small place, even though we were the only guests who appeared to be staying there! Overall it's a bit unconventional but we did enjoy ourselves and would recommend it to guests who enjoy a bit of spontaneity and fun. Not if you want to relax and chill out or be close to the city. Yummy scrambled eggs! Best I ever had!

Where do I start.......
From the moment I arrived I felt like I was truly on an unforgettable holiday that I will remember for the rest of my life.
First of all the owner/manager Cyrill picked me up at the airport with a big smile and we proceeded to a market to purchase some fresh fish that he had previously ordered.
Once we arrived at this place it was as if someone beamed you into another dimension. it was as if you were high up in the mountains in a jungle. There are waterfalls and swimming pool with a cave in it. Fish pools, sauna, Jacuzzi and the most amazing rooms each different from the other. Extremely friendly staff. Beautiful people really. wow is all i can say. Loved and you must experience it to believe it.

Room Tip: Get the tree house room. so nice. private and yet you are in the middle of everything
