Superb location Best Western Kinabalu hotel

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 Jul 2013
This hotel is about 5 kms from the airport,Lot 3-4 jalan Pantai. We paid $ 90 per night, for the family room, for 3 nights.Buffet Breakfast was quite ok,nothing much to choose from. Our room was spacious, nothing to complain about except for the failing safe deposit box(they offered us safe box at the front desk). No bathtub, but the size of the bathroom is big, with complete amenities and towel for 4 people.Location was superb cannot find any better than this.Just the opposite of Wisma Merdeka, short walk to Gaya center(tour operator offices),Suria Sabah, Jesselton harbour and eateries just steps away,Sunday market is very near.Tour operator desk at the front desk.Helpful and friendly staffs, but peoples at the front desk must try to smile a lot, dont give us that serious look:-)..Satisfied with the sum we pay,and what we got from it.Value for our money.

I stayed here with my mum, aunt, cousins, and grandparents for one night in June. We booked two rooms through hotels.com and instantly checked in.

The rooms were spacious although for the price we paid, we did not get any windows. The service was certainly wonderful as they tried their best to accommodate to our requests. Although we requested a non-smoking room, we were given a smoking room, probably due to their lack of space. They were very helpful in spraying the room and trying to get rid of the odour.

I have stayed in many hotels in Kota Kinabalu as I visit my family there twice a year. The hotel's location is great as it is in the city centre and close to all the attractions and food places. There is a convenience store nearby for all your late night needs and the nearby supermarket has all the supplies a traveller needs during his stay.

We were only able to stay one night as they were fully booked out, otherwise we would have definitely stayed longer.

Room tip: Splurge a little and get a room with a window to see the hustle and bustle of the city. Skip the breakfast to save money; there are tons of cheap places to eat around the area

Arrived tired from long flight and was glad to reach my destination at Best Western Kinabalu. The first thing you notice is the musty smell in the foyer. That said though for the price this hotel offers great position and comfortable amenities. Breakfast buffet was adequate. Staff were friendly and more than happy to help plan tours and tend to needs. The music in the bar needs to be turned down though as it made it impossible to have a drink in there.

From check in till departure, I felt like I was staying in a motel with no service at all. Hotel is old & in desperate need of refurbishment. Lift door is so small that big luggages get stuck going in! Hotel room is small and smells musky. Toilet is small, dirty and tiles were stained. Bedsheets have stains, pillows flat & bed springs poke out like a sore nightmare. Room fridge sticks out because it doesn't fit under the old tv cabinet. There is only an old box tv with only a few snowy channels. No bedroom slippers or basic toiletries. Internet is always not working. And to make matters worse, staff don't seem bothered to work or either don't understand English. Front desk manager Mr Musyadi had to be "requested" when I wanted to.complain. He initially told coffeehouse staff Ms Hayati, "why should I come out to see the guest?" And only when I got upset, did he walk over. Without any manners to apologise or attempt to understand my problems, he merely showed me that his laptop internet was working fine & blamed the problem on my company laptop having access issues. When internet suddenly worked, he just pushed the laptop back to me & walked off. Without a word! This is by far the worst attitudeI have seen in a hotel manager. So in conclusion, thiswill be my 1st n last time to step foot here. Others please be aware n choose wisely.

On a tight budget you are ready to accept poor conditions. However cheaper options such as backpackers and guesthouses are plenty in KK. We checked in late and at the reception there was very loud music. The receptionist did not know until what time it was opened - hopefully a customer could reply: 2am. Arriving in the rooms at 8th floor, hopefully there was no sound from downstairs. However, I was put in a smoking floor while I am allergic to smoke - so had itchy eyes the whole time.

A tiny spider on the bed, no big issue for me, I just killed it. The bathroom was leaking. We had to flush manually by opening the bidet as it was broken. The bidet was yellowish - not very clean - and some dead insects were floating...
No possibility to open the window - anyway there was a loud generator just outside which kept me awake as the noise did not stop the whole night.
During the night, our neighbours were drunk and walls were so thin that we heard them screaming until we had to knock and ask them to remain quiet at 2 am...

In the morning, after the room service cleaned the room, it was more dirty than before cleaning due to long hair on the floor...

On the plus side, location is very good, just near the main attractions and shopping mall. Staff is also nice. You can book tours, though I did not.

I would not go back as I can find much better options for the same price.
