We stayed here for 7 nights in total and had a lovely time. Our room was good but I think in the older part of hotel so not amazing but spacious, clean and well appointed. The staff were all very friendly and extremely professional from the reception staff, to those in restaurants, the sports team staff and those around pools. Without exception all went the extra mile to be helpful and even seemed to remember us which was amazing given the size of the hotel and number of guests. We took advantage of the activities and loved the morning yoga sessions ( what a location).

We choose half board which given prices for dinner within the hotel restaurants we're pleased we did. However, drinks are still very expensive and not included in half board package. Like many others we found the range of food at breakfast to be excellent but did feel it was a little chaotic with huge numbers of guests to be served. Having said that the staff managed it all with good humour and professionalism.

The location is good and with hindsight we realised getting into Kota Kinabalu was easier than we anticipated so wished we'd eaten outside of hotel more in the evenings as got a bit bored with food offer after a few days.

Great accommodations. Great staff. Amazing breakfasts and the best place to catch the sunset. This resort would be perfect for families the rooms are great and plenty of activities to partake in. You will need transportation of some sort to get to and from because it's a 20 min drive into the city

On arrival, we were taken to the Kinabalu lounge for private check in. What a nice surprise! The room was large, with a nice mountain view, but also a view of the bay. Nice that mosquito coil and plug in is provided, you definitely need it! Bed was huge and very comfortable. Bathroom had separate bath and shower, with good water pressure. The club lounge staff Linda, Claire and Karl, looked after us each evening. Remembering drinks from the previous evenings and showing genuine interest in our daily activities and plans for the rest of our stay. We chose to have breakfast each day in the lounge, it offered a large spread the same as would be expected from any buffet. The STAR Marina staff were very helpful each day we chose to take the boats to the Islands offerings suggestions of where had the best swimming conditions. All the restaurants offered great value and good food with the exception of Shang Palace, where the food was very bland. We have reviewed all the restaurants separately. We will defiantly look at returning when we need a relaxing break away in the future.

This is quite a large hotel with multi national guests and quite near KK, 10myr and 15 mins in an Uber. Having been to quieter hotels the last few years we wanted a hotel with a more activity this year with some entertainment near to a town and this hotel delivers this very well. We ate in all the 4 restaurants for 8 of our 10 nights, they provide a good range of food and we enjoyed all of them. N.B. Peak Hour at breakfast is busy. There is a poolside ice cream cafe, poolside food and drink service and coco joes covered sea view restaurant too.
The staff are a key asset of this hotel, so friendly, obliging and professional, a credit to the organisation and certainly enhanced our holiday.
The 2m+ deep pool is large enough not to be busy and provides a large separate area for adults still leaving other large mixed and children's parts. There is an excellent seating/lounging area around the edge to cool off in the water, an excellent design. There are plenty of new sun loungers with shade or sun. There are a lot of children here and a great area for them with water activities and slides. There is chess, football billiards, tennis gym, golf, pétanque and even blowpipes. I'm sure plenty of other things too.
The beach is small but well kept and quiet. Water sports are available with boat trips to the many islands for snorkelling etc. The views out to sea are great.
We preferred the quieter Kinabalu wing and possibly best to have a sea view on level 2, which would get the afternoon sun but we were hardly in the room in the daytime. The sunset from the sunset bar (need to book) or beach is fabulous and suspect the newer but larger busier Tanjung wing sea view also benefit from this. Our large room was what we expect from a Shangri-La, having stayed in 3 others, and had everything we needed including good sports channels for U.K. Football and F1, a very large comfortable bed, plentiful water, tea, coffee, fruit, AC etc
Wifi appears very good and works everywhere.
Had a great holiday and would definitely visit again

We stayed for 5 days on our honeymoon after 4 nights in Singapore (the Shangri-la) and after a rough first night due to noisy neighbours finally relaxed and enjoyed our time here

Pros:
- great location relative to KK and the airport (30MYR flat fee for a taxi)
- staff service was high quality. They are accommodating and will try and rectify any issues ASAP. For example, the first night we had a noisy neighbour and they were very quick to move us.
- hotel is well furnished
- rooms were cleaned daily (or twice daily if you wanted) to a high standard.
- amenities e.g. The pitch and put was good fun and well maintained.
- a high quality packed breakfast was provided for us on the day we had an early 5am start to visit the Orangutans
- patisserie counter (inc. macaroons) was very good
- adult area of the pool which is heavily enforced by the life guards

Con:
- Operational awareness: we made a reservation to eat at Peppinos and the booking was taken by someone who wasn't aware an event was taking place the next evening. However, as a pro and another example of great service, on discovering this on the night of our reservation we were offered a complimentary meal at the buffet.
- Breakfast - seems there is not enough seating capacity or staff levels for the number of guests. Some guests were led into the dining area without a table at the popular times (8.30-10).
- smoking was allowed in some areas including the Borneo bar, which coming from the UK we found unpleasant.
- we noticed plastic rubbish within the sea which put us off going in the sea - however the staff did clear this up regularly
