I don't think there is enough room in this box to explain how absolutely fantastic this Shangri La is.

My husband and I spent 4 nights here as part of our honeymoon and the experience was amazing. From the moment we arrived, greeted by the gong, we were so impressed by the resort and especially the staff.

We stayed in a Club suite (well worth the paid upgrade) and enjoyed every minute. The Club Lounge was great for the breakfast (don't bother with Cafe Tatu - it's a circus), and in particular the conplimentary drinks and canapés in the evening. The club is great, however, the staff really make all the difference. Andy Zain, Stassey, Johnny and the rest of their team were absolutely delightful.

Overall, we loved our stay and can't wait until we return!

We returned to the hotel having had an amazing holiday in 2011, hoping that we wouldn't be disappointed. We weren't once again the hotel and it's staff pulled out all the stops and we had a holiday of a lifetime. Who knows we might be back for a third year running! We booked an executive Kinabalu Club suite, but chose to upgrade to deluxe suite in the Tanjung wing after our 4th night. This room had the most amazing sunset views from the wrap around balcony. Would definitely recommend it, well worth the extra money. May we say a huge thank you to Wett, Andy, Duncan, Johnny and all the ladies in the Club for looking after as, you really were amazing. Once again we ate in all the restaurants, Peppino's, Shang Palace and Cafe Tatu all excellent. My only negative comment was Coco Joes food was not up to the same level as the other restaurants we only had lunch here a couple of times, we didnt think it offered value for money and the menu wasn't very exciting. Another huge thank you to Alfred at the leisure centre, who knows we may see you in England next year! So once again Shangri La Tangjung Aru, we had a wonderful holiday and you make choosing next years holiday destination very difficult.... we may be back!

Room Tip: Request a high floor overlooking the Sunset Bar

We stayed from March 18th to 25th 2012 in a Club room partly compensated for by the hotel as a result of a very problematic visit 12 months earlier caused by the then ongoing extensive renovation programme.
The visit this time shows what a difference the renovations have made & what a fantastic resort the Tanjung Aru now is. We were greeted like long lost friends by Linda who had been in the Club lounge last year & who is a great representative of the Shangri-La guest relations department. All Kinabulu Club rooms - ours was 9714, one floor up from the Club lounge - have balconies overlooking the sea - plus a room safe (we did have trouble with ours but had it fixed quickly), daily water, tea & coffee making, bath & large shower & a fairly complicated flat screen TV plus video plus PC system. The room wi-fi-wasn't very good but improved slightly after a visit from a hotel IT specialist sent along after we raised this problem. You can use the hotel wi-fi computers in the Cliub lounge. The rooms are large & the beds big & very comfortable. With breakfast included & soft drinks/tea all day, then afternoon tea from around 2-4pm & a great array of food, cocktails & all other drinks included from 5-7pm, this is very good value & will save you spending on these things elsewhere. What makes the experience of the Club lounge so very good is the staff. They are dedicated, professional, very friendly & relaxed & a credit to the hotel. In particular, Jonny and Wett (who went out & bought me some chinese stomach remedies when we had eaten out & I had an upset stomach - that's above & beyond the call of duty!). Other newer staff are just as helpful & the whole atmosphere of the Club lounge is delightful & where you get to chat with other guests & find out what to do & where to go. My wife is vegetarian & when we told the staff there wasn't much for her at the 5-7pm food time, they arranged for the hotel's top chef to come & discuss options she could have & they then prepared something special for her for the evenings.
You have the option of eating your included breakfast in the main hotel's cafe Tatu - very extensive food range though, as you should expect, a lot of Asian options & breakfast is very noisy & it's hard to find a table.
The resort has an in-house travel bureau but the three agents all work for different operators! We found by talking to all three that you could get the same trip cheaper from one rather than the other. A bit of a surprise but we got the North Borneo steam railway trip cheaper by talking to a diffent tour operator in the same room! It's a good trip to do as is the Klias river trip & do go & see the Orang Utans at the Rasa Ria (sister hotel) - we saw more there than on this year's stay in Sandakan & visit to Sepilok.
We ate in Peppinos, the Italian restaurant, where the food is excellent & reasonably priced but beware of the wine & drinks prices, which are sky high as in most places in Malaysia.
The new Infinity pool is stunning though there are too few sunbeds - these were mostly full early in the day but we used the small beach a lot & it benefits from a cooling breeze. We were two adults only but could see the new children's pool & water games area must be really good fun & as it's separate from the main adult pool area any noise doesn't carry. The 'pitch & putt' is rather neglected & with holes of only 50-60 metres is more like putt & putt!
The whole resort is what we had hoped for on our last visit 12 months earlier - this time it beat all our expectations - we will miss our visits there.

very attentive staff everywhere. go the extra and reserve the club facilities as they mean easy check in and out and a lounge for breakfast and snacks and complimentray drinks. the beach bar is in a great spot but the music is not always designed for the older listener. we stayed here three times in three weeks and used it as our base for excursions into north borneo, the hotel was very helpful with leaving luggage whilst we were on tour. it is close to the airport but still takes 10-15 minutes to get there as you have to drive around the perimeter. really enjoyed our stay here

Room Tip: go for the club rate
