“Great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 August 2012 via mobile

We stayed here after unexpectedly extending our stay by a night but not our stay in Yeng Keng hotel. we booked here specifically for the location and whilst the hotel is nother as nice they were perfectly fine forprice we paid.

One tip though, the corridor can be quite noisy and we had a window above our door so earplugs and an eye mask are advisable!

This is a great value budget hotel centrally located on Chulia St. It is clean and modern. The standard rooms are quite small but we were upgraded to a deluxe as they had just painted our room and the smell of paint was overpowering. I recommend getting the deluxe if you want space and asking for a room away from reception as it gets noisy and the light peeps in from under the door. We jammed a towel in for a restful sleep.

Great choice for the price range. Would stay again.

So I loved this hotel in many ways. Perhaps the best front desk staff I have come across in my six week holiday. The hotel itself is fairly new. The AC works great, they have a flat screen TV with a couple English stations, and though the location around it seems a bit dodgy, it's really in a great area.

The problem we ran into is the noise level, but not from the street as you are tucked far enough away from the street which is a blessing. The hotel flooring on the second floor is wood so if you are unlucky enough to be on the first floor (that is to say, got a room with a private bath) you hear everything above you. The door also has about a two inch gap between it and the floor and since there is no carpet, everything is heard and everything bounces around that is being said on the first floor.

Two nights in a row we were woken by God knows what happening above us. The best way I can describe it is picture the sound a garbage truck makes when it is picking up an industrial trash can, and that's what we had happen, twice, at 3 am, for 10 to 15 minutes.

So I love the place, I really do. It's cheap, the bed was nice, the location was central, but the noise is something that made it rough for us. If you can tolerate the noise, I doubt you'll find a better staff with a cleaner hotel in a better location!

I checked in to this hotel on Sunday and stayed for 3 nights. I booked the standard room and was upgraded to deluxe room (I only knew the room was upgraded upon check out). I stayed in room 106, which is located at the ground floor, right next to the altar. Free wifi is available in the room but signal is rather weak (2 bars out of 3). Still ok for me. I'm not here to download movies, anyway. I drove from Kuala Lumpur. Thus, I parked my car at the hotel without any charge. There is no F&B outlets in the hotel. It's solely rooms. But there are plenty of cafes and local restaurants nearby the hotel.

The beds are comfortable. The hotel does provide the basic amenities like towels, coffee tea, kettle, a mini fridge (available only in deluxe rooms), a flat screen tv, air conditioning, water heather, hair dryer and a small wardrobe for your clothes. There is no safe deposit box.

If you are driving, this hotel is rather secluded and can be quite difficult to locate. I was driving along Chulia Street for 3 times. Only then I found the hotel. It's right before Yeng Keng hotel and is approximately 100-200 meters from the Penang Road intersection. There is a narrow lane between old shop lots and you need to drive in. Nevertheless, this hotel is centrally located in Georgetown.

You can easily walk to Campbell and Kimberly Street from this hotel. Grab a local map and you will find your way, by foot, to many tourists attractions, including the several UNESCO sites, namely Godness of Mercy, Kapitan Keling Mosque, Khoo Kongsi, St George church, Penang state museum, Pinang Peranakan mansion, Cheong Fatt Tze mansion.

Chulia Heritage hotel is also walking distance to the infamous Penang Road cendol, Line Clear Nasi Kandar, Toh Soon alley coffeeshop, Chowrasta market and Jalan Kuala Kangsar morning market, Perangin mall and Komtar.

I will recommend this hotel to my friends. The price you pay, plus the location and the convenience you enjoy, this is the place to be when you are in Penang.

Room Tip: Choose room 104 when you book a Deluxe room. It's spacious and wifi signal is perfect. But you m...
