“Beautiful & Location!”
Reviewed 4 April 2012

Yeng Keng is a beautifully restored Chinese building on Chulia Street which is within the UNESCO world heritage part of George Town. Super location with 5 star well maintained boutique hotel. Convenience to access to any attraction in Komtar town area. Nice breakfast provided in private cafe just beside the hotel.

Stayed 3 nights and if not for having pre-paid (Agoda booking) in full we would have moved after 1 night. Upstairs room and shower is tiny and crammed with DIY/ somewhat tacky furnishings. The 'king' bed is 2 single beds parked together wedged against a window and there is about a 2' gap at foot of bed for squeezing into chair/desk in order to work on a notebook. We also get to hear all traffic on the wooden stairs and corridor. We liked the open front yard/ al fresco dining area, the friendly staff but for the price of almost RM400 per night, there are many far more comfortable/ more luxurious offers in the area.

The hotel is a 3* but is very well maintained and service is good the hotel is simple and clean nothing flash which is what you would expect from a hotel of this rating. rooms are basic and have basic amenties like water kettle tv. the hotel is a small botique hotel and serves a very personalised service. the staff will go out of there way to help you guide you and make you feel welcome. very friendly and always there to help. breakfast was served between 7 -10 am and is very nice and is included in the price of your room. there is a small swimming pool and a few deck chairs. The hotel is clean and tidy. Penang is a very pricey area for hotels so this came up best value for money which it certainly lives up to that. It is a 3* so please do not expect any more you get what you pay for.

I would defo stay here again as it great value great service and most of all its clean. i would reccomend this hotel.

The hotel is in george town a very cultural part of Penang. Hotel is in a excellent location easy to reach all parts of town by walking, china town india town and temples and churchs. Goeorge town is small enough to be seen by foot. But you can book a guide for a few hours, which is reasonable in price.

We read all the other reviews, and the place seemed good. We were only going to be in Penang a night, and really, the basic thing we were looking for was clean. But Yeng Keng was simply a gem, an old style colonial bldg. right in the middle of everything. Paying a few extra bucks was definitely worth it.

Room Tip: AC was great

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Yeng Keng Hotel is a 20-room restored heritage boutique hotel located in one of the oldest surviving and intact 19th-century buildings at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage City of George Town, Penang. Like many of the other buildings in the neighbourhood, it was originally built in the mid 1800's as a private residence. The Anglo Indian bungalow belonged initially to Shaik Eusoffe bin Shaik Latiff an Indian Muslim family and remains unique in Chulia Street for not being relegated to the rear of a row of shop-houses blocking its facade. In 1897 trustees of the Cantonese Club 'Ying Han Pit Shu' bought the building on behalf of the association, later donating it to the trustees of the Straits Chinese Building Association in 1939. The building was later leased to Yeng Keng Hotel. The conversion from a residence into a budget hotel was the prevailing trend along the street at the beginning of the 20th century. Small places of lodgings that were conveniently reached from the harbour were in great demand as the traffic in the port grew. An impressive traditional Chinese entrance gate was constructed announcing entry to the 'Lodging House,' adding grandeur to the commercial establishment and to distinguish it from the rest of the buildings on the street. Conservation and upgrading by the present owner, Hoo Kim Properties Sdn Bhd, was undertaken in March 2009 with the renewed Yeng Keng Hotel completed in April 2010. ... more   less
