“Nice looking hotel, good view but poor service and facilities”
Reviewed 8 June 2012

Stayed at the Kinta Hotel for 7 days. It is a new hotel and they seem to be unprepared to handle the surge of guests (combination of families, small business meetings and big conventions) - from check-in, housekeeping, dining. Even hotel facilities are not able to keep up - elevators are unreliable, wifi is 99% unavailable, our toilet was twice not functioning, improper swim wear (shirts/shorts) is allowed in the pool. One night, the alarm of our electronically locked door went off at 3:15 am - disturbing our sleep! For our convention, our brewed coffee was either sweet (I suspect sugar was already added to the big coffee dispenser as no sugar sachets were available) or instant coffee warmed up in metal pitchers - This is not even 3-star standard. This depressed me as I need good brewed coffee in the mornings. Palong Restaurant staff seem rude. Great Miner Chinese Cuisine Restaurant though is good - both in terms of food and service. Kinta management needs to wake up as their beautiful hotel is being wasted and ruined by bad service. If I have the chance to go back to Ipoh, I wouldn't stay at Kinta.

Room Tip: Unfortunately, most of those in our group also had different complaints about their rooms and bathro...

I have booked a stay via the hotel website and nobody get back to me....even though i have sent many reminders to enquire them if my room reservation has been confirmed but no one get back to me at all until i have to make a phone call to check with them. Room rates indicated in their website is different from what they quoted over the phone and when asked, they claimed they have not updated their website.
Checked in/out was slow as only one staff was around. No wifi service.Lifts have to be individually press as not link and no lift indicator inside so you have to guess if you have reached your level. The room was spacious and with good view of the 'river'. However stains, chips and cracklines can be found eveywhere in the room even though is newly built. Called the front desk to check on the hot water supply in the bathroom and it took forever for them to come and which in the end they never did came. Breakfast was miserable selection and taste awlful. The staffs around did not even bothered to set up the cutleries until asked and they just cleared everything away while we went to take some tea. Saw some of the hotel staffs eating at the breakfast area but aren't hotel staffs suppose to eat seperately from where the guests are eating? Branded as a new and only 5 star hotel in Ipoh, i think it is far overrated!!

Had an international business meeting here. This is a new hotel, open only about 6 months, and they still haven’t finished it completely. In addition to the musty and mildew smell on what seems every floor, there’s an odor of sheetrock dust. It’s sad, because they’ve invested quite a bit in the hotel, but the service just seems so-so. There’s not much if anything near the hotel, and the “river view” is more like looking at a drainage canal.

Check in was very slow as there was only one person at the desk, and it took him a while to even find my reservation or those of my colleagues. My room didn’t smell as bad as the hallways; I don’t know why it smells so musty, although it might have something to do with the lack of air conditioning in the halls. The room AC worked very well, but after looking for a thermostat, I found that it’s controlled with touch panels on the wall as is everything else including lights. The room was relatively large, but very bare. Only a fat screen TV on the wall. Unfortunately, there were only about a dozen channels, and the only English channels were sports channels (they need BBC or CNN). The wall already had a large crack running from the ceiling to the floor, and there were multiple spackling repairs that hadn’t been painted over. The carpet was already stained. The toilet sprayer leaked on the bathroom floor, but was not fixed despite informing the front desk. Luckily, there was complimentary bottled water. There was a hot water kettle and coffee, which is always a plus, but is standard in Asian hotels. The bed was fairly hard, but again expected in Asia.

The lobby bar was nice, but the ‘pool bar’ on the 5th floor didn’t accept room charges since they claimed they weren’t part of the hotel. Unfortunately, they didn’t tell us that when we ordered, and the hotel doesn’t change money (so be sure and get money somewhere else). Internet was free, but you definitely get what you pay for. Sporadic outages.

The elevators were one of the most frustrating things about this hotel. There are 4 elevators, but you have to push all 4 (they aren’t synced to be ‘called’ if you push just one) on any floor to go up or down. This slowed the elevators down because if you get in an elevator, the others still have to stop even if no one is waiting. Once you get in, 3 of the 4 elevators didn’t even have floor indicators inside to let you know what floor you were stopping at.

The meeting facilities were large, and the AVs worked. The staff seemed responsive to our needs for the meeting. I hope they can improve their service that can take this hotel to the next level; however, next time, I’m going to try the Impiana.

There were 3 of us traveling. I booked into the 2 bedroom apartment. I was upgraded to a 3 room but still I did not like it. Being new it was dusty, the un-carpeted floor put me off, it was not homely, and I felt that it was not ready to be put up for sale.

So I asked to change to a superior room with an extra bed. I got breakfast for three and the room did not disappoint.

I liked the big rectangular shower and the glass walled bath. I liked the touch screen controls, the flat screen, the study table, the linen.

At checking in, there was a wedding reception with a lion dance making the atmosphere tense and stressful to both the guests and those manning the reception. The banquet hall share the same entrance as the main lobby, which was not very smart. Make noise if you wish but restrict it within the banquet hall.

I like the tin mine bar, a bit small though but with a well located smoking area. I like the bar b q spread.

The breakfast spread was average, with thrifty spread of western selection. On the 5th floor is the swimming pool, gym and cafe. The glass, see through shell or wall swimming pool was good for "underwater" snapshots.

The city was within walking distance. The view of the limestone hills and the greens was pleasing.

It needs a good wash or continuous and concerted wiping to get rid of the construction dust. It should get better.

Room Tip: avoid the apartment.
