Berjaya review

We spent 1 week in a rainforest studio with our 2 kids (4yo and toddler). Berjaya is a lovely resort with stunning surroundings. The beach is gorgeous. Our room was spacious, clean and had everything we needed. We were amongst the trees and loved listening to the tranquil sounds of the rainforest, but unfortunately the peacefulness would only last about 5 minutes before being interrupted by a noisy diesel truck roaring by (aka shuttle). Most of the chalets are situated on the road where shuttles and motorbikes constantly pass noisily by (the road was directly beneath our balcony). Almost every night I would just be drifting off to sleep only to be awakened by yet another shuttle driving by, and this would continue into the early hours of the morning. In the mornings we preferred to walk to the lobby for breakfast, but even a pleasant stroll in nature was left tainted by smelly diesel fumes with every passing shuttle. I don't understand how a resort of this standard can be using these trucks as shuttles? Electric vehicles would be a huge improvement, and much better for the environment.

The resort surrounds are lovely and we spotted a lot of wildlife from our balcony - monkeys, squirrels and even a flying lemur.
If it weren't for the noise of the vehicles, we would've liked to have slept with windows open to enjoy the fresh air and wake up to the sounds of the rainforest, however without screens on the windows and doors to keep out monkeys and bugs, there is no choice but to use the air conditioner every night (which many would prefer due to the climate but we actually found the temperature quite pleasant as we come from a warm place).

Laundry service wasn't ideal - we arranged for 1 plastic bag of laundry to be washed (mostly kids clothes which weren't on the price list) and were charged 100RM! In addition it was meant to be same day service, but we didn't receive it back until 6pm the following day, after numerous phonecalls. So in hindsight I think it would be cheaper and quicker to pay for a taxi to the nearest laundromat.

Other than that, Berjaya is a beautiful place and the staff were outstanding - very friendly and helpful, always greeting everyone with a smile, and they love kids. Our 4 year old loved the kids club and came home with some lovely crafts.

The breakfast buffet is fantastic, and the restaurants do excellent food - there is an earlybird discount of 20% off before 6.30pm which was perfect for us with small kids. Otherwise the Oriental Village is very close by and we had many good cheap meals there. We also had a complimentary meal at the amazing Thai restaurant as part of our package for staying 1 week, along with 15% discount on all food & beverage at the resort (stay more save more package).

Overall I would recommend Berjaya to others but especially if they can improve the shuttle service to quieter vehicles. Though having said that, my kids keep saying they miss the resort, especially the trucks!

Older resort in reasonable condition. The rooms are really spread across the property and necessary to use the shuttle buses for most movements. There are also several water bungalows which I didn’t stay in, however they looked larger and newer than the traditional cabins. The buses are regular but I chose to relocate close to the lobby so I could walk to the pool and main dining areas. All rooms appear to be the same age, and a bit rustic. Everything was working (eventually after call to maintenance). Most rooms are located in fairly thick jungle with limited views so they are generally dark. AC and plumbing work well. The pool is large and on the backside of really nice white sand beach. Ample loungers and towels available, as is swim up bar. Drinks and food are good quality and reasonably priced. Staff in all areas are friendly. The spa is very well done with good value and excellent service, Joe was my masseuse and he was really really good at getting deep breaking up all the stress points. Resort was good value overall and good quality, not 5* but you are paying for 4* IMO.

I stayed here more than 10 years ago for business and at that time, I'm pretty impressed with the hotel. When I returned in January this year, I'm disappointed. The rooms are dated, the main dining area (1 floor below the lobby) is dated, the food from the main dining area is horrible and too oily; a few of us had to visit the toilet more than twice and our refreshments (served outside the meeting room) are infested with ants! Overall, I'm extremely disappointed with the food and not forgetting that the coffee sucks. Also, the crew at the dining area doesn't look like they wanna work at their station.
On the better side, the housekeeping crew & those driving the shuttle are accommodating and helpful. I appreciate their help.

It is often difficult reading between the lines when deciding where to stay and I’m glad we focussed on the positive reviews as we thoroughly enjoyed our 6 nights in Berjaya and wished we could have stayed longer.
We were in rain forest chalet 4150 and as I have mobility problems I panicked at first but we had no steps to our chalet and the longest wait we had from calling for the shuttle bus was around 4 minutes.
We were also worried this may be too remote for us and restaurant choices limited but this wasn’t the case.
The staff are very friendly and the room was clean and the bed very comfortable.
Breakfast was more than adequate and the staff work very hard.
We would like to return.

Room Tip: Rain forest chalets generally don’t have sea views but some do but the remoteness and privacy is worth it.

We loved Berjaya, Langkawi - we were in a premier chalet on the waters' edge (room 1277) and it was perfect.

Lovely spacious room, clean, modern, everything worked (although had to request an extra bed on arrival (only had 3 beds for 4 people) which came very promptly (10 mins) once it was agreed to - not sure why they think 4 people can sleep in 3 beds). Could have done with a few more hangers in the wardrobe (but that is nitpicking!). Safe was very fiddly to use - manager came very promptly and sorted it out and then it worked fine (although the resort felt very safe and had no concerns about theft).

Lovely spacious veranda area with two loungers and 2 chairs. Bathroom very spacious and very well appointed - bath, shower, his and hers sinks. Shower amazing - powerful and hot (had to use a water heater for only a few minutes). Lighting in room and veranda perfect.

Breakfast fantastic (Beach Brasserie - what a beautiful restaurant and gorgeous location) - curry (chicken rendang, chapatti/roti boom, vegetable curries e.g. chana masala), fresh fruit (melon, pineapple, papaya, lychees), cereal, waffles, eggs any way you wanted them, hot pastries, toast, cheese, meat, salad, a selection of juices, tea, coffee.

Restaurants plentiful and reasonable prices (loved the Thai restaurant and the Beach Brasserie). The staff in the Thai restaurant were amazing and remembered our drink order every time. Gorgeous fresh fish available as well as other plentiful menu options.

I had my birthday while there and a cake was waiting in our room when we first arrived as well as a cake that was given to me when we went to the Thai restaurant on my birthday and another cake was waiting in our room when we came back - amazing!

Amazing swimming pool, very well maintained although swimming pool bathrooms and toilet drainage could be improved. No lifeguard at the pool but wasn't a problem for us. Efficient system for pool towels. Not enough sunbeds around the pool and sometimes had to wait for one - some more could be added to help. Sunken pool bar was a real treat - service could be slow but happy hour was for 4 hours so didn't really mind. Kids absolutely adored the swimming pool - had different depths, was large and never felt crowded, was very well appointed with beautiful planting around it and a waterfall as well.

Wifi seemed to work well and was efficient although didn't use it that much. Had to log back a few times but not a problem.

Staff very attentive and helpful throughout the hotel and always welcoming with a smile. Shuttles could very occasionally be slow but generally we had no problem at all - they were generally very quick (more so when the young women were in charge) and the maximum time we had to wait was 10 mins (which we really didn't mind - if we were in the foyer, there were swallows/swifts flitting around as well as hornbills and then geckos at night). We also enjoyed walking to and from our room (10 min walk) which was very near the Thai restaurant. Easy to get to Oriental Village or cable car from reception.

Beach area gorgeous (very spacious) and really liked the pontoon that led into the mangrove - saw fish, snakes and mudskippers in the mangrove at low tide. Good warnings about jellyfish in the sea unlike other resorts in Langkawi. Good netted area in sea to swim in.

Spa area gorgeous and peaceful (pool cool but you quickly get used to that). Had a massage which was lovely - a really nice service where you sit in a relaxation area beforehand and are given tea, then the same afterwards. Sauna and steam room available as well. Very clean and well maintained.

Well lit at night but not obtrusive. Loved watching the Barracudas and other plentiful fish beneath the Thai restaurant as well as the herons keenly hunting. Also saw a large brown jellyfish, a large white jellyfish and a smaller white jellyfish underneath the Thai restaurant.

Wildlife plentiful - black and brown monkeys - brown monkeys could get very cheeky and regularly tried to steal from people's bags round the pool (especially if they had food but the monkeys seemed to like mobile phones as well) - but generally we brought nothing valuable so didn't bother us. Saw hornbills, monitor lizards, sea eagles, brahminy kites, herons, lots of fish in the shallows. Beautiful wooded mountains behind the hotel which was a gorgeous backdrop.

Did a trip booked through the hotel to the mangroves, bat cave, eagle feeding etc. Really enjoyed it apart from the fish farm which had rays and other large fish in tiny enclosures and the bathroom facilities in the fish farm were disgusting. The rest of the tour - the bat cave, the eagle feeding, the swimming monkeys in the mangrove as well as the boat trip out to sea to see the fruit bats on an island were amazing - would prefer to miss out the fish farm completely.

To sum up, Berjaya Langkawi was a totally amazing place - were there for 2 weeks and were sad to leave - what a gorgeous place! Amazing geography, amazing wildlife, fantastic staff, gorgeous rooms. Would definitely go back.
