SaSaab is amazing! The rooms have magnificent views and are so comfortable, and the setting is magical. The staff exceeds expectations with their friendliness and willingness to surprise you at every moment. No request went unanswered, we literally wanted to cry when we said goodbye to everyone.

The staff and facilities at Sasaab were wonderful. The staff made us feel incredibly welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The area is so beautiful and wild. Highly recommended. Our room was private and offered incredible views of the river. We watched a Samburu marriage ceremonial party cross the river while an elephant cooled off all within half an hour of arrival.

We stayed at Sasaab for four days, as part of a trip organised by Africa Travel Resource that included its sister property Solio. As with Solio, we found this to be one of the best lodges that we have stayed in in either east or southern Africa

Sasaab has enjoyed some prominence on television in the UK recently and this is well deserved. The location is exquisite, located on a hillside overlooking the Westgate Conservancy across the Ewaso Nyiro river. The tented rooms are both comfortable and good places to spend a few hours watching wildlife. We were lucky enough to spend an afternoon watching a herd of elephants in the river that borders the lodge and on another occasion, a martial eagle in an adjacent tree. We just missed two leopards seen close to the camp by others

A slight drawback is the long drive to the Samburu Reserve itself, mentioned by others. It is probably an hour to the core area of the reserve, which does have much more wildlife than the conservancy in which Sasaab is situated. However, you can plan to spend the best part of a day in Samburu, with mobile breakfasts or lunches taken in the reserve, so it is not such a hardship. We saw leopards on two occasions, as well as lions and wild dogs, crocodiles and many elephants. There are also the many creatures unique to the north of Kenya. of which our favourites were the beautful Grevys zebras

There is certainly game in the Westgate Conservancy, and this will hopefully increase further as the owners of Sasaab are working hard to support a number of conservation and community initiatives. You feel very much a part of this while staying at Sasaab and get to learn a great deal about the way that wildlife and local community needs are being managed.

An added advantage of Westgate will be obvious to anyone who has visited Samburu. You have the place to yourself and will rarely see another safari vehicle while out on a game drive. Samburu is rather different and I think this gives Sasaab a real edge when compared with the better lodges within the Samburu reserve

The Lodge itself is of a very high standard, with fabulous food, a lovely swimming pool and a superb deck for taking breakfast, lunch or a sundowner. It was being managed by Mike and Agnes when we were there and they were very genial and knowledgable hosts, with nothing being too much trouble. The staff that we met were all courteous and helpful and it was a privilege to meet them and learn a little about the Samburu way of life

I think that the combination of local wildlife and cultural activity combined with the ability to access Samburu is a winner and makes Sasaab stand out in this part of northern Kenya. I would certainly recommend Sasaab to anyone who wants to combine a great wildlife experience with a feeling of helping the conservation effort locally. And of course, you are based in one of Kenya's top lodges while doing that.

Room Tip: All rooms are great. Perhaps 3 and 4 if you want a shorter walk to the main area or 1 if you want total privacy

Thank you so much for writing this fabulous review. We are delighted to read about your stay at Sasaab and all of the wonderful wildlife encounters that you experienced during your time with us! As you mention we are located outside of the reserve, although it is an hour drive to the core area of the reserve the freedom of being located in our own private conservancy makes it well worth it! We can do night game drives, fly camps, camel, quad and walking safaris - all of which would not possible if you were to stay within the reserve. Our presence in Westgate conservancy is critical in protecting and conserving wildlife corridors by providing an alternative income to the communities that live here and by managing the land in this area. The team will be delighted to hear that they did such a good job and we all hope that you will come and see us again.
