The positive side of this hotel is the spacious rooms, the location, and other smaller courtesies like a safe-box in the room, a well-working free wi-fi system, helpful reception, and other compliments like a bathroom basket including a shaving and dental kit, some soap, a comb, etc. In my room there was also a hairdryer, some Kleenex and a minibar. The biggest advantage is the location: there is a change shop just up the street (with the best rates in town), two shops nearby (a “stolichny” up the street, which does not sell alcohol, and the Silk Way Center down Tole Bi street to the left, but there are also some small shops nearby open until 21 PM). Buses 32 and 99, and trolley 9 run nearby, and the cable car station for Kok-Tobe is not more than a 15-minute walk from the hotel. The disadvantages are poor lighting in the rooms, scarce maintenance, a hard bed, badly adjusted TV-channels, and lack of soundproofing: you will hear everything that happens in adjacent rooms or in the corridor. I had some further observations: the hot water arrived slowly to the tap; at breakfast, the staff neglected the buffet table so one of the guests, who spoke Kazakh, told a waitress off, which was very awkward; although there was a restaurant (and other reviewers mentioned it, too, in previous reviews), I did not see any guests, so I decided not to try it (perhaps it is only open in the summer). The hotel offered free transfer from the airport, but not TO the airport; I paid 3000 tenge for that. But it was fine, and a wake-up call at dawn was also finely performed. In general, it is not a four-star hotel, but its prices and the good location offset that. I did not have any problems during the week I spent there. Also, they were ready to change my room when I asked for a room on the quiet side on arrival.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel ("quiet side").

we stayed in superior suit. Room is big with big bathroom and bath. In the heart of the city. Overall experience was good. Despite big room and comfortable bed interior seemed old and in need of refreshing. Balcony was so small I was just laughing went I was checking it out. If for few days thanks to good location it is a good place to stay in Almaty. If you need something fancy and with a good bar check other places. If you need place to sleep and have access to the city is perfect for its price.

They lost our booking each time we came despite reminders and confirmed bookings. So we got the left over rooms with no Aircon and/or no mini-bar refrigerator. The service desk wanted to blame us for late arrival but we had indicated arrival time clearly. Otherwise rooms clean and comfortable. Good central location and reasonable price.

There is no hot water available and to buy it on the restorant cost 900TT. The breakfast are included small tomato, have cucumber, and some salami. Not something that can satisfy the hanger.

The room are clean and the location is exelent.

Almost perfectly located in a tree lined avenue in downtown Almaty this property manages to preserve Soviet styled luxury. From the suspicious rough security men at the entrance, the cold but dependable receptionists, the thick carpeted hallways and the large comfortable rooms.

This was once a prime Soviet luxury hotel but is largely forgotten these days. But the current room rates are a steel and for those with a curious sense for Soviet nostalgia this might be just the opportunity you were waiting for.

Breakfast will leave you with a loss for words and makes you think you made a wrong turn and accidentally ended up in a factory cafeteria.

This hotel has quieted down a bit these days. The automatic air refresher dispensers in the hallways are the only memory left eradicating smells of years of chain smoking men in polyester suits. Now the only noise is that of traffic in front of the hotel.

I love these kinds of hotels; an increasingly rare breed of accommodation, stylish, clean but showing all the wear and tear that is so obvious and comes with the age. I love the thick plush curtains, the golden lamps, the wooden floors covered with thick carpets. Almaty is a city of change; I just wish that some memories could remain forever.

On my next visit to Almaty I will stay again at the Ambassador; if it still exists. But you probably guessed it already, I love Soviet nostalgia!
