Owner description: Japanese garden 'Koko-en' was constructed in1992 at the exact site of Nishi-Oyashiki(Lord's West Residence) with Himeji Castle, one of the world cultural heritages, as a background. The area of this garden is about 3.5 ha and it is composed of 9 difficult garsens, built on the archaeologically excavated site of samurai houses and roads. Using the gardening techniques in the Edo period(ca.1600-1860) as a good model, 'Koko-en' creates historical atmosphere with the magnificent view of Himeji Castle. We hope you will have agood stroll and feel history in 'Koko-en' with Himeji Castle.

I really loved Kokoen garden! It was very relaxing to walk around it, and around mid-day there were hardly any people there. The different themed areas in the garden are very interesting, and I’m sure there will be always something to see, no matter what season you go. There is also a small tea house in the garden where you can enjoy traditional japanese tea and sweets for 500 yen.

When you buy your ticket for Himeji castle get your ticket for the Kokoen-garden at the same time, its about a 20 min walk from the castle to the entrance , lots of small gardens within a garden, ponds tea houses and its a really nice walk through a japanese garden, you seem to think its part of the castle grounds because its so close, but its a separate area, love the large koi carp in the ponds ,lots of them ,also a lot of bird life around the gardens, on the way out get your stamps as a souvenir from the desk nr the entrance

But if you buy combined tickets with the castle it is almost with no costs (40 yens more). If I pay 200 yens just to enter the garden I would feel as I've lost 200. The walk takes about 30 mnts and there are two places nice enough to stop for a while.

This garden compromises of many themed subgardens. It was very intersting to strive through them all.

This is a must visit when you're in Himeji! After Himeji Castle, just go over to Koko-en that locate right beside to behold and experience the peace and tranquil environment. There're many sections of garden where you can explore one by one. Dining in a restaurant that overlooking the koi pond and mini waterfall was sucha blessed moment throughout the day. Plus point is you don't have to push your way through throngs of tourists here.
