Hotel Shikisai is a great option if you're after a high quality, authentic Japan spa resort free from packaged tour groups, to explore the area for a couple of days, without breaking the bank. While the hotel is starting to show its age, the lobby and rooms are kept in extremely good conditions. Our rooms, which overlook the forest, was large, clean and well equipped - a great spot to retire for the afternoon for some green tea and snacks.
Being a hot spring resort, there is a variety of hot pools which was not crowded during our visit, and which any visitor should make use of.
Kaiseki meals for dinner are included with the stay and they vary daily, which adds to the experience. The courses were very tasty, and in keeping with the theme of a health spa complements the detox experience (although not necessarily all would suit a western palette).
On the downside, their DVD selection could be improved (there is not much to do otherwise at night); the wifi did not work during our stay and there was no 4G connection around the resort either, which in retrospect was not so bad making it a digital detox!
Overall, a great stay at Shikisai in a beautiful and interesting part of Japan.More
