If you are looking for a relaxation and doing nothing much, this place is perfect. A secluded place, great river and mountain view, very charming hospitality, rustic ryokan, huge indoor and outdoor onsen, a handsome vine-bridge, pretty kaeseki, ample breakfast buffet, very welcoming staffs.
The small drawback is it is far from Nikko. almost an hour bus ride to the place. Since I relied on the bus, I have to follow the bus schedule.
Very RECOMMENDED

Loved everything about our stay here. Great onsen, wonderful food, and the view from the room was top notch (I think all the rooms overlook the river). Pricey but good value compared to other places I have stayed.

Lovely position, amazing buildings, wonderful history, food to die for & very friendly staff.
My stay there with my wife & her parents was magnificent - I would return in a heartbeat.
Not to mention the onsen, communal bath, vine/rope bridge to dining hall & amazing historical pictures, items, musical instruments etc. Just wonderful.
Was even offered a job at the hotel if I ever returned to Nikko (I'm Australian) & my wife;s parents were showing us around Tokugawa Castle/Museum/Shrine etc. Amazing holiday. Japanese people are so friendly, respectful & know how to look after their guests.

Room Tip: Overlooking river - and the rope/vine bridge leading to the dining hall. Lovely food, great views, amazing historical items/info. Loved it.

The Honke Bankyu retains the traditional Japanese hospitality. Taira clan or Heike, a major Japanese clan of samurai, has been running this Ryokan for hundreds of year. The host is warm, and the service is attentive.

The ryokan stands along a brook, and there is a suspension bridge connecting the main building and the restaurant on the other side of the brook. In winter, one can see the nice ice sculpture on the opposite bank from the ryokan. The ryokan is a spacious and traditional Japanese building decorated in countryside style rather than delicate one. There is a big library on the second floor.

The dinner was yummy. The meal was country style Kaiseki, dainty rather than crude. Sashimi was well-presented in a mini igloo which was the icon of the local snow festival’s icon. The Isshobera(一升べら) of Irori-yaki(囲爐裡燒), which was a “Hamburg” made from ground chicken and miso, was special and tasty. The wagyu beef in the hotpot was tender.

In the evening, the ryokan’s shuttle bus sent guests to the riverside snow festival site. Thousands of mini igloos with lighted candles inside arranged themselves all over the dry riverbed, igniting a gorgeous and romantic night scene.

The onsen was upon the brook, which was not big but comfortable. Also, the private baths were available for rent.

This Classic Japanese ryokan was a shining pear of our itinerary.

Overall - top-notch customer service. All the staff are extremely polite, friendly, and helpful.

We absolutely enjoyed our 2-night stay in this beautiful historical ryokan. The private onzens are so relaxing, plus you have a view of the river and surrounding hills. Definitely one of the best onzen experiences that we had.

The food was also amazing. As with other traditional onzen ryokans, the dinners were luxurious. At this place they have their unique style of bbq and other food items and that made it very special.

Apart from all the good things that you'd expect from a top-notch onzen ryokan, I have to stress that the most impressive thing about this one is the staff, they really made us feel welcomed and pampered at all times. Thank you everyone at Honke Bankyu, hope to see you guys again!
