We chose to experience this Ryokan and were not disappointed. Our large room contained a table and two floor seats and two slightly higher chairs! Meals were served in our rooms and were absolutely delicious. Breakfast was an eight o'clock wake up and the beds were removed by 8.30 so that breakfast could be served in our room! More traditional food for breakfast which was mainly fish! It's a real experience but quite a challenge for us older travellers.

This ryokan is across the road from the shore of Lake Ashi in Hakonemachi. It is easily accessible from Odawara Station via bus (takes around 1.5hrs through the winding roads of the Hakone area), the bus stop is just across the road. The bus is covered by the Hakone free pass (worth it if you're going to be exploring the area).
The highlight of our stay was the food - it is totally worth booking with meals included! Because we can't eat seafood, and one or two other things we did mention this when we booked via Agoda and this was catered for! We had an awesome mix of meat and vegetables served in a variety of ways during our 4 night stay - also it was served in our room. Best meals we had during our stay in Japan! Be sure to be back on time for your meal though, there is nothing else open in the area after 5pm. Breakfast (served in the dining room) was a mix of eggs, salad, noodles, and vegetables.
The room was what we expected: a tatami mat room, which has a low table and chairs (there is green tea and a thermos of hot water left there twice daily), and a TV. The entry into the room has a place to put your shoes (you're provided with slippers to wear around the ryokan), is where the futons are stored (someone comes along after dinner to put them out for you), and there is a toilet and a vanity area. The futons were alright, but a bit uncomfortable if you're not used to them.
The other highlight was the hot spring bath - it's worth sitting in the outdoor bath after your shower, very relaxing!
The staff try their best to communicate with non-Japanese speaking guests and the two ladies who served our dinner and knocked on our door for breakfast were lovely! We know a little basic Japanese which went a long way with some miming.

This was a real experience of an authentic Japanese ryokan (hotel). The room was large with very little furniture, grass matted floor, sliding windows and door, a toilet, wash basin and a small shower. Dinner and breakfast were served in the room. Traditional Japanese cuisine on a very low table, outstanding variety, very tasty and very different from what's on offer in most restaurants. There is a bathhouse in the hotel, separated for men and women, fed by a natural hot water spring. A great experience as long as you are not embarrassed to be naked with unknown people. In total greatly recommend to get a real feel of Japanese culture. We were the only western guest during our 3 day stay. English is a bit of a problem, but didn't create a problem or distract from the overall experience.

We had the most amazing stay here on our two week trip. The hosts were very welcoming (with a matcha tea drink and cake) and our room was great. I was apprehensive about sleeping on a futon on the floor, but the bed was extremely comfy - getting up in the middle of the night wasn't as much of a challenge as I thought! Our room was very clean, with a wardrobe and safe. We had an en suite bathroom (shower room and separate toilet) separated from the sleeping/living area with sliding doors. there were two low chairs to sit on and all meals were served in the main room. (we couldn't manage to sit on the floor, and were encouraged to use the chairs) The banquet food was outstanding. We were novices to Japanese food (other than sushi) and it was amazing - such a variety of dishes each meal. So tasty too. In view of previous comments about breakfast, I was a little worried about the food served, but I had no need to be. Yes there was fish and lots of other dishes - all were typically japanese, and amazingly tasty. This is truly different from any western style hotels, and the standard is excellent. I loved staying here as it was so unusual. The Onsen was also lovely - separate mens and womens, but the three times I used it, I was alone. the outside bath was particularly magical at night. It would have been nice to have been able to share that experience with my husband, but I loved it and did feel very relaxed here. We were the only western couple staying at the time, and we have next to no Japanese language, but we managed to get by as the staff were all so helpful and accommodating - some spoke better english than others (which was amazing given that we were in a slightly less visited place for westerners). There was wifi in reception, but not in the rooms - not a problem for us. I'd go back again!

The hotel is a short walk from the lake where the boat moors. The hotel doesn't look much from outside but the rooms a nicely authentic. The hot spring is very relaxing. Now here is the rub. The dinner arrives and looks spectacularly laid out. However it is simply the worst food we had on our 3 week trips in Japan.
