We went to Naoshima, Toshiba and Inujima and Inujima was by far my favorite. Almost no tourists go there and you really feel then integration of a beautiful, typical Japanese island village incorporated with the Art project. I found the installations far more interesting and there were many of them. The island itself is lovely to walk around.

I spent 6 days for Setouchi Triennial 2016 and Inujima is the island I love most. Unlike the other popular islands such as Naoshima, Teishima and Shodoshima which you need to take a bike or take a bus to tour around, basically you can just walk around the whole island on foot in a few hours. There’s also better ferry arrangement, when you get on the island by high speed boat, you can get a “entitled” return ticket so you are entitled to get a ferry return ticket in a designated time. I was so stressful to visit other popular islands earlier as I need to arrive the ferry 45-60 minutes to queue up for the return ticket.

My favourite exhibition is Inujima "Art House Project" A-Art House / "reflectwo" and C-Art House / "Ether". There’re other permanent exhibitions here like Inujima Seirensho Art Museum which you can still visit though the triennial 2016 has ended. I found the first part of exhibition getting in the dark tunnel is very amazing as you will see a different thing when you look backward. The Art Museum used to be an old copper refinery along the coastal line but it becomes an interesting museum now.

Another highlight is the Inujima Dog House Project with a big mosaic dog lying outside a white house. Inujima is such a peaceful island but there’re a lot of interesting things you can explore. There are so many outdoor art pieces in this rural village. Next time probably I should stay overnight here.

We had enjoyed our day at Naoshima Art Island and decided to stay longer and visit two other nearby islands with art installations also sponsored by the same Benesse Art Project: Inujima and Teshima. The right decision! Inujima had some remarkable works in established sites including a complex groups of installations in a former copper refinery. The visit to a tiny island community added to the experience. And Teshima was something else!
