Premier Hotel -CABIN- Matsumoto

Less than a 5 minute walk from the train and bus station, Toko City hotel is very well located for the traveller, especially when there's heavy luggage involved! Downstairs at the hotel entrance (the lobby is on top floor) is a 24-hour convenience store. Staff are polite, but don't speak a lot of English, but this wasn't a problem. Rooms are small and pretty basic, but clean, as is the bathroom. Rooms are quiet. We asked for a non-smoking room- this was catered for, but thoughout the corridor we could smell cigarette smoke. There are coin-operated washing facilities available- very handy. Bonus is free wifi- no need for passwords. Free drinks are available in the lobby. We did not eat at the hotel, so I can't comment on the food. The hotel is easy walking distance to the castle- I guess less than 20 minutes- and the streets with the old-fashioned houses. There are plenty of restuarants in the town too.

This was the cheapest accommodation in our trip to Japan, but it was pretty good, and I would recommend staying there if I had to stay in Matsumoto again.

BTW on Wednesday some shops in Matsumoto close.

The Toko City hotel is right across the street from the train station – so it’s really easy to get to. It is a little strange for them to have the lobby on one of the higher floors, but no problem at all. The staff was very helpful when I needed to find a chiropractor/massage therapist due to back pain.

I was surprised at the size of the room. This is the only hotel during our whole stay that contained two beds. Also, the beds are firm like a futon, so no worrying about soggy bed back issues. Yes, the rooms might have a “dated” look, but we were in it for the comfort not the style. Note: the bathroom is a little cramped - but nothing that would turn me off from the convenience of the location, price and cozy beds!

The breakfast is a little more Japanese authentic than you might find in Tokyo – the eggs are RAW – not hard boiled as I assumed (oops!) – and are meant to be broken over hot rice. Still, once you get the hang of it, it’s rather lovely.

Matsumoto is a pretty small town, so everything is really walkable from the hotel. I recommend “Vamanos!” a surprisingly authentic Southwestern style "Mexican" Restaurant a few blocks from the hotel. Having been raised in northern New Mexico, I can safely say that this restaurant is worth visiting!

This hotel was situated right in the middle of Matsumoto City, across from the train station and near shops and restaurants. Only 1km from Matsumoto Castle, it's location was really the only thumbs up for me.

I was disappointed by the value of this hotel, I am not sure if all hotels are expensive in Matsumoto, but this was definately the worst we had it in our 3 weeks in Japan. The lobby was located on the 10th floor which was interesting with hotel rooms in floors below.

The view was impressive, however the bed was firm, the whole room was covered in ugly and dated decor, and it felt more like a student dorm. The bathroom was like something you would see in a boat and very small. But worse than that, having a shower with air pockets was like wrestling a cobra first thing in the morning. I thought the whole bathroom was going to explode. And again, the room was just so HOT, in the middle of winter we had to turn the heating off.

We stayed in the Toko City Hotel Matsumoto for a 1 night stay, breaking up a trip to Tokyo with a trip to see the mountains Matsumoto castle. The hotel is easy to find from the train station (there's a plaza in front of the train station, and the hotel is directly across the plaza from the station). The rooms were clean and the water was hot. On the other hand, this was one of the smallest hotel rooms I've had in Japan. There was barely enough floor place for two people to drop their backpacks (it was only possible if the backpacks were arranged a certain way and standing up). There was a desk with wired internet (not wifi), and the room had a LAN cable to hook up to the internet. There was also a spectacularly hard mattress, but that's pretty common throughout Japanese hotels.

It was one of the cheaper hotels offered by the tourist office in the railway station, and is just across the road. Functional and clean. Wired internet in the room worked. There is a breakfast (extra charge) room on the 10th floor (along with reception!) with a great view over to the hills beyond and overlooks the railway station. There is a convenience store beside the entrance, and many other shops close by. It is about a 1km flat and easy walk to the castle. To save time we took a taxi from the other side of the station (a little closer) to the wood block museum for 1500yen, and then the local train back to town on the first afternoon and viewed the castle illuminated at night and then a visit the next morning The hotel held our bags till we walked back, and then we strolled across the road for our next train.
