Owner description: Located on the banks of the poetic Thu Bon River, in central Quang Nam province, 30 kilometers south of Da Nang, Hoi An ancient town is an Eastern oriental classic captivation. With the strategic location on the banks of the great river, with one seaside border (East), it used to be one of the major trading centers in Southeast Asia during the 16th century due to the early western trader occupying period.

Walking the old town and stopping off in various shops/bars/coffee shops is really nice, both in the day time and at night.

However, the daily influx of tourists really detracts from the experience. Hoi An was by far the most touristic place in Vietnam that we visited.

Thank Rob E

We love the old architecture and that they are maintaining it, however sad that it has become so touristy and being ruined by having a souvenir, tailor, leather or t-shirt/ dress shop everywhere. Wish they could keep it more authentic. It was really busy with bus loads of tourists coming in. Maybe try going on a weekday.

The full moon festival was on which was so lovely with a boat trip and letting paper lanterns go on the river but hope they are cleaning it all up after!

In summary it’s definitely worth going but sad to say that it’s no longer the lovely authentic experience.. hope they can improve that for the future!

The ancient town is touristy but definitely worth going there.
The atmosphere is relaxing and you can take great pictures there.
The market at night is exciting and you ca make a wish sending a ship with a candle down the river.

Old city charm and photographic opportunities aplenty. Would suggest visit prior to 9am. Then it gets busy. By evening the place is thronged by busloads of people. Get hold of a map and take the interconnected alleyways. If you get the chance eat in the marketplace. All the local dishes at ridiculously inexpensive prices, served up by happy smiling cooks. We couldn't resist return visits.

I was disappointed with Hoi An. I had heard so many great things and really all the Ancient Town has are a bunch of stores and restaurants! It's difficult to appreciate the ancient architecture when all you see are clothes and souvenirs!
