The hotels on the drive to this hotel are fascinating and all pretty large. Then you pull up to Mardan Palace and realize that you're not in Kansas anymore. The property is magnificent and worth whatever they're charging. Check-in was done from a sofa and we were walked by a staff person to wherever we were asking about. Considering the size of the place, all of the restaurants were much better than expected. The buffet was, as we told our friends, like five star food in a buffet setting.
The only drawback was, from a westerner's standpoint, the gregarious behavior of the guests coming from behind the former Iron Curtain. There is a rule that trousers and collared shirts should be worn at dinner unless of course you happen to be an oil magnate with a prize wife, in which case you are welcome in a soccer/football jersey, shorts and flip flops. And, feel free to speak loudly on your mobile phone for everyone to hear. A small price to pay to have had the pleasure to stay here.More
