“Beautiful Resort and Spa in a Secluded Location”
Reviewed 16 January 2012

The Mangosteen Resort is a small boutique resort.

It is beautifully designed and very well maintained. The rooms are actually bungalows...you get your own little hut! It is a very relaxing and comfortable environment. The rooms are very spacious. You a hammock right outside your door and you have a private outdoors jacuzzi and shower area. The resort amenities are minimal...in addition to the spa where you can get pampered (for a price!) there is really only the swimming pool. It has to be said that it is a very nice pool available 24 hours a day. It is an infinity pool with salted water, and surrounds the restaurant at the middle of the property. The pool also features a water bar with stools built in to the pool. Very nice. The restaurant is decent. Prices were high and while nothing was outstanding, nothing was bad either. The service at the restaurant, as with the rest of the hotel, was excellent. Some problems with English, but everyone was friendly and helpful.

The resort is in the southern tip of Phuket (Rawai), and located in a very odd location. It is not really a resort area, and the surrounding area seems very local, small grocers and restaurants. In this sense, the resort is quite secluded (from the types of things people usually want to come to Phuket to see). Walking is not an option in the frantic streets of Thailand, so you either have to get a taxi or rent your own car or scooter. Just as a reference, we went to see "FantaSea" a dinner/stage show with elephants and it was near Kata Beach, on the west coast of Phuket. The journey there (mostly because of the traffic) took an hour and a half and same for the way back. And so, staying in Rawai definitely felt secluded. Depending on your perspective, however, that could be a very good or bad thing. If you are there to relax and not interested in seeing much else it is perfect. However, if you want to be able to leave the resort and walk around, it's not really that kind of place.

We spent four days for our wedding anniversary and really enjoyed being at the resort. However, beware the English-speaking salesman/saleswoman, as they really put a damper on our holiday. They are there to sell you a "membership" to the resort (they insist it is not a time-share) and they will NOT take no for an answer. When they first spoke to us, we wanted to be friendly and told them we would think about it. In hindsight, we should have given them a firm "no" at the beginning even at risk of sounding impolite. They are nice people, but everyday we were pestered with aggressive soliciting and it was extremely off-putting, to the point where it made us not want to return in the future. So...take my advice, put on your thick-skin, regardless of what they say, just give them a "no" in the beginning, skip the "pitch" if you can, and avoid them for the duration of your trip.

Pros:
Seclusion--Quiet and away from the hustle bustle
Beautiful Ambience and Design
The resort is small and never feels crowded
Excellent Service

Cons:
Seclusion--Quiet and far away from everything. It is not possible to walk around outside the resort.
Restaurant--Food is mediocre and expensive
Relentless Salesman/Saleswoman

Conclusion:
A beautiful small-sized resort in a non-touristy area of Phuket. Excellent property and excellent service. Great for a relaxing holiday by the pool, somewhat lacking if you are looking for more.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a Jacuzzi!

Like many others we took advantage of the $199 for 7 days and yes endured a bit of frustration with getting replys to make our booking (But fairness to the resort I am sure they were inundated) Once we did get a reply, we asked if there were upgrade options and paid extra to upgrade to a Royal Jacuzzi Villa.
We arrived tired due to two delayed flights, on arrival we were greeted by friendly staff and checked in quickly. We were taken to out room, which wasn't quite what i had requested in my booking as I requested a balcony and sea view.
The next day reception advised us they would take care of things and on return from the weekend market they had moved our bags to an upstairs room. Wow!!!! now this was great, a sea view,,spa on the balcony,,flat screen TV etc.... Yes it is a villa they use as a display room (Room 310 I think).
Our best memory is sitting in the spa during a storm, with lightning, thunder and rain swirling around us, whilst enjoying some nice drinks...
Here are just a few points in reply to many negative reviews on here:
# Yes we were asked to be shown a presentation for marketing purposes, but you can say no! and once we did nothing else was mentioned during our stay..
# Location, before you book google and I sure you can see it is out of the way.. And that is a great part of the attraction here, if you want the hussle, bussle and party atmosphere stay in Patong.
# Getting around, easy hire a car. We booked a car to pick up/return to the airport and it only cost approx $200 for the 7 days. Phuket is not hard to drive around, you just need to know where you are going and yes take care as there are some crazy drivers/riders.
But hiring a car you can really see Phuket, we went to floating restaurants, monkey temples and many other out of the way places which were much more enjoyable than any tour we have done there previous visits.
# Yes the breakfast is a bit pricey and so is the restaurant meals, but its easy to but local fruit etc and have a lovely breakfast on your balcony/deck. Plus with a car you can get a local breakfast for 100-200 Baht (AU$3-6) and there are great restaurants where you can get great meals including many drinks for 500 Baht (AU $16) or no different than good restaurants at home you can pay big $$ e.g. Baan Ram Pi (Over looking Patong Beach) where we paid 5000 Baht (AU $160) but for a 5 star meal and great bottle of red wine.
Like everything in Phuket there is something for everyones taste or budget.
# Drinks, the resort has a Happy Hour every night from 5.30-7pm with 2 for 1 cocktails...Between the 2 of us our record was a combined 10 in 1 1/2 hours and a reasonable cost of 1200 Baht (AU $35) not bad for 10 cocktails....

Room Tip: # If you have the $199 deal, see what upgrades you can get for a small cost # If you do upgrade req...

Like others, we took up the $199/7 days deal. We travelled to Phuket for the Laguna triathlon and thought this deal was a great way to extend our stay to be a 12 month late honeymoon and last holiday by ourselves before we have a baby in January. We both work hard, have not had a holiday for 12 months and this was "our time".

The atmosphere, however, spoiled our holiday. I would have overlooked the old furniture, tiny old television, couch that the ends fell off, poorly functioning shower and exhorbitant breakfast price. But from the moment we arrived up the stairs, we were "confronted" by a slimy salesman feeding his pitch about what restaurants they supported and we should eat at and how we were obliged to give up at least 1 and a half hours of our time to hear their time share talk. "it was the least we could do"

Like an earlier review, I also adjusted my age as my wife was over 30 and I was not. This was fine until we declined the salesman trying to sell us a time share. They were good about it in the end though and promised to let it slide(provided we listen to their speil). We endured only about 10 minutes til the salesman dropped his bundle when we kept giving him a flat no so he sent us on our way.

Had this been the extent of it, I might have been able to overlook the other shortfalls, but there was a team of these salesmen pestering guests as they ate breakfast, laid by the pool and went about trying to enjoy their holiday. it made my skin crawl and spoiled the experience.

The location was a little out of the way, but we wandered down the road, hired a scooter for 150 baht a day and that gave us the freedom to go anywhere so location was no longer a problem. It was nice and quiet and the pool and view were also nice.

We didn't eat much for breakfast but paid the exhorbitant price for the convenience (definitely not 5 star quality).

Had I known what I was in for, I would have happily torn up my $199 voucher and paid for a week elsewhere. We had a great time in Phuket, Naiharn and Rawai were great and good to be away from the craziness of Patong but the hotel was the sour part of our trip.

We took advantage of a cheap holiday for my birthday $199 for 7 days. The resort had a beautiful view of the ocean from our Thai Villa and the pool. The garden needed a makeover as did some of the accommodation. The resort provided a bus to take us to the beach as it is too far to walk. We met a lot of Aussie's taking advantage of the special so we shared a mini-bus to sight see and check out the local restaurants at the Pier. Then we would retreat to the lovely pool and bar for a drink. Our room was private and comfortable but was a little tired. The Restaurant was good for Dinner but you need a change so we ate where the locals go as well.Breakfast was disappointing as there was not enough variety, others went for a walk to find a cafe for something different.Overall we enjoyed our stay it was peaceful and away from Patong and all the noises, but only a 1/2 hours drive if you so desire.

Room Tip: Pay extra for an upgrade as the room will have a spa and a Better TV.

I agree with most other reviewers below. Bargain for $199/7days. Pool is lovely. Food in restaurant enjoyable. The appearance of resort is "quaint" and "cute". The sound of water flowing from fountain is pleasant sound while you are checking in.

However, a couple of comments:
Renovation needed. Our shower was blocked and still unsure of hygiene of shower with rocks in it, instead of proper tiles. The furniture is also old and would have been great 20 yrs ago, but maybe not now.

Better trained staff would be helpful. Staff at this hotel were pleasant enough, but didn't "anticipate our needs" the way you can become accustomed to at other 5 star international properties in Thailand.

I don't think they can do much about the out of way location. Go here if you want to relax and don't wish to party. Otherwise, if you are prepared to walk there are nice local restaurants around. Otherwise, only 200baht to rent a scooter all day, and nothing is an obstacle then. But do drive safely as driving a scooter is different to car, and the laws may not be what you are accustomed to. We saw one tourist almost get hit at a roundabout in Chalong. We had a blast though.
Just be aware of time share presentation. They can't afford to offer accommodation for so cheap without there being some catch.
