We were a large group of friends holidaying at the nearby resort of Karon Beach. Wanting to explore a bit further afield we spoke to an operator of one of the local long tail boats and they suggested a ride to Freedom Beach.
The next day, we hired a couple of Long Tails and made the short trip to the beach. The boat ride was good fun and gave us the chance to site a bit of the local coastline. Arriving at the beach we disembarked and arranged a time to be collected for our return trip.
First impressions of the beach were extremely positive; crystal clear waters, a clean white sand beach and a backdrop of palm trees. This was the type of beach we had been hoping to discover whilst in Thailand.
As we had set off early, we were among the first of the days visitors. As we were walking up the beach we were greeted by the owner, who was conducting a litter pick. As we had young children with us, he advised us where to pitch up so that we could take advantage of the afternoon shade as it became available.
You can tell the pride that the owner had in the beach, and he came over to talk to us on several occasions. His stories about when the Boxing Day Tsunami hit were both fascinating and frightening!
There is a beach bar on site that serves food and drink, although we brought our own with us on the boat ride.
There is a section of beach that is roped off for snorklers. It was in this area that we taught our 7 year old daughter to snorkle. She said it felt as if she was swimming in an aquarium!!!
Although the beach filled up as the day went on, at no point did it feel overcrowded and there was plenty of space both on the beach and in the water.
All too soon our boat returned to take us back to Karon Beach.
A very enjoyable day out on a secluded and picturesque beach. We would definately return if we ever visit the area again!
