Back in Thailand again, but first time in Chiang Rai. Read some of the mixed reviews of The Legend, we thought we would give it a go. We booked a deluxe studio room for our 4 night stay, which are large, and have a semi open air shower room. There is plenty of places to put clothes, bags, etc, but nothing next to the bed, and no clock. Overall, the room is a little quirky but still works. A nice big rain water shower head in the bathroom would have been a nice touch as there is plenty of room. Reasonable pool area, didn't get chance to use it very much as raining all the time we were there. Staff at breakfast were really nice, we built up a nice rapport with slightly longer stay. Great setting overlooking the Kok River. Buffet breakfast not the biggest or best, but adequate. Great spa, probably the best value hotel massage we have ever had. As usual, with all resort type stays, food and wine a little expensive. No wonder people go out to eat and drink. Night market and surrounding area great for food, very cheap. Good massage parlour and very respectable was the Lanna (alongside Cat Cafe). You can walk down in 15-20 minutes, Tuk Tuk back 100 bahts, or take the hotel shuttle bus. You can always pick faults if you look hard enough, dirty plate left outside room, coffee tea not topped up one day, no sign of management at all! A welcome drink at check-in would have been a nice touch. They key was just taken at check-out, there was no "hope you've had a nice stay, come back soon" etc. A few little tweaks could greatly improve the overall stay and these do not have to cost the hotel any money. All in all, it is a reasonably good 4 star property, and we will certainly consider it the next time in Chiang Rai.

PS You must do the day tour to Myanmar and the Mekong. Just crossing the bridge into Myanmar on foot and passing through the checkpoint is like a scene out of a film, and a slight step back in time. Remember your passport.

This felt like a faded colonial hotel but it isn't that old, just rather tired. Our whitewashed studio room was sparsely furnished with a strange configuration of separate rooms for the shower, loo and wash basin. The room was also very dark due to the overhanging trees and nearby rooms. We did have a small terrace alongside a pond but the mosquito count was high considering the temperature was modest so we didn't sit out for long. However the main issue was the deafening song of the incredibly noisy frogs in said pond. It sounded like a pneumatic drill was being used nearby!
The self-service buffet breakfast was good but the restaurant is open air so we needed puffa jackets and socks in February. One thing worth mentioning - the 'walking street' and night markets are within easy walking distance although the hotel seemed to think that a taxi was necessary.
Overall, this is probably the nicest hotel in Chiang Rai but it was nothing special and we were glad we were only staying for one night!

We love small and authentic hotels that reflect the local surroundings and The Legend was perfect.
We had not visited Chaing Rai before but have been all over Thailand so know that standards are usually high and we were not disappointed.
We arrived early evening and went straight to dinner and enjoyed a great buffet of Thai classics with a northern twist as well as some European dishes all cooked very well if you are the type to crave sautéed potatoes and cauliflower cheese in Thailand We aren't !
The coconut milk home made ice cream was to die for as was the coconut milk puddings at breakfast.
Our room was spacious and had a huge wet room and nice verandah with swinging chair...the gardens and pools are lush and the staff team consistently friendly and helpful..no complaints at all.
We caught a Tuk tuk to the amazing white temple by ourselves, and the hotel organised a great trip to the Golden Triangle for us..both good days out.
We liked chilling out in the pool watching the river although there are a lot of ants around the sun beds so just keep a look out.
One criticism was no drinks service by the pool...but only short walk to the restaurant.
The spa was fab and we loved the fresh coffee scrub and massage and outdoor sauna.
This is a great value peaceful friendly hotel and we can highly recommend it ...it eased us nicely into our holiday.

This gorgeous resort sits on approximately 5 hectairs right on the magnificent Maekok River with rolling lawns, huge established shade trees and lush gardens. The open air dining overlooking lush trees and the river is relaxing and peaceful. Suites nicely furnished, spotlessly clean, with fresh flowers daily.
Great music 6 nights a week with their in-house guitarist.
Food is very mediocre and expensive.
Communication has been frustrating as none of the staff speak English which is incredible in a resort of this caliber.
Booking tours from here is expensive, frustrating and confusing due to the language barrier, there is a brief and confusing write up on tours available with no indication of how far, if it is applicable for frail or elderly travellers, what to take, how long etc.......
This resort has a very casual relaxed atmosphere which is nice, HOWEVER the lack of communication was a problem.

Room tip: Any accommodation facing the river is great.

We only stayed here one night on our way to Laos. We where met at the airport and taken to the hotel, we were met by helpful friendly staff who took us to our room. The room was clean and beautifully presented. The room had everything you could need so it did seem a bit cluttered. Due to our late arrival we ate in the Thai restaurant in the hotel. The food was ok we had spring rolls for starters then fish. We were the only people in the restaurant so there was not much atmosphere. All the staff where helpful and friendly.
