“Lovely. but could do with some renovation”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2011

I stayed in Ulun Ubud in Sep 2009. The hotel was lovely, peaceful and quiet with abundance of greenery and local decor. It was really exactly what I was looking for at that time so i can't complain. however even in 2009 it was obvious that hotel needed some renovation. rooms were a bit outdated however boasted marvelous views and everyone from driver to check-in to room service were the most friendliest people i've ever met.
now, i have to say that STAIRS at ulun ubud are not for the faint hearted! starting from morning run for breakfast and then couple of up and downs and then ups again during the day definitely toned me up and during first 2 days i was so thankful for various benches next to the stair runs! :)))

there is a lovely spa just opposite the hotel across the street and numerous bars, restaurants and shops throughout the street. awesome location even if a bit far away from the centre of the city.

oh, forgot to mention that i've experienced my first earthquake while at ulun ubud. glad to mention that nothing fell down or was ruined!

Room Tip: if you are not fit, DON'T get rooms down the stairs!!! :))

I stayed here in April and found this hotel to be very quiet and peaceful - something which I appreciated very much after being tired of all the traffic noises from other places I stayed at in Ubud. My room (No 101) was the one nearest to an amazing rivergorge where you could sit from your terrace and enjoy wonderful views of the river, jungle, ricefields and birds. No traffic or human noise - just silence! The hotel itself is a little run-down so the best tip is to check out the rooms before you choose one (some of them have mould problems). The service was very good and the food ok. I recommend this hotel to those who want peace and quiet but still want to be quite near Ubud Center (they provide a hotel shuttle) - be aware though that there are many steps.

Great place with beatiful view, great service, the staff is very kind and they have a service to bring you and pick you up with the car free!! Nice swimming pool, very clean and amazing atmosphere! The room was simple but ok, only the maintenance is a little bit careless and there are a lot of stairs...but I hightly reccomend it!

Sadly as stated in earlier reviews, the resort "could be" absolutely gorgeous. We stayed in the suite on the pool level and we were disappointed when we arrived. The suites/rooms need a complete renovation. The smell in our room was awful and the mold unacceptable. A constantly dripping air conditioner should be fixed for the pool of water on the floor is adding to the problems. The filthy, moldy venetian blind in the bathroom should have been thrown out long ago and the bathroom scrubbed from top to bottom. A stained canopy cover on the bed is just not inviting. Our thoughts after staying 5 nights were that the owner is running the resort into the ground. It is very sad because the view, the location, and the construction could and should be one of the nicer resorts in Ubud and it's simply not. Some rooms have been abandoned and it appears that less than half the resort is operational.

The staff however are a gem. All are polite, friendly and most helpful. They deserve better.

20 Years ago myself and a friend took my first overseas trip to Bali. Luckily we chose Ulun Ubud to stay in. I have never frogotten that trip. The location, the staff, the view, the pool etc.. etc.. Finally 20 years later i was able to finally take my partner and two children to this beautiful place. (Boys aged 7 and 2 and a half.)

With all this history there was a lot of pressure on but it was not a dissapointment. My partner and children instantly loved the place and we were made to feel as welcome as I had been 20 years earlier. (we stayed 9 days)

The look of the hotel had not changed- especially the entrance and outside of the bungalows and the pool. However, after a couple of days of staying there it was clear that no major maintenance had been carried out for a long time and this is indeed a shame. (see other recent reviews.) Especially as we discovered that not all the rooms could be let out as they were in such a bad state and a lot of the old antiques were lying unrepaired and had been replaced with newer furniture.

We had rooms 202 and 204 as a family room and it worked well for us as they were big rooms not far from reception. They only had showers and one of them was blocked so the water did not drain away properly. The windows were very dirty and the overall standard of the rooms was maybe 2 stars! However, we were able to overlook it all as it was such a great location. So quiet and spectacular a view. And the staff are so friendly and welcoming. Patient with tourists (though some seemed a little embarassed about the state of the place ).

We paid $100 US a night for the 2 rooms which is probably expensive for Bali for the standard but honestly i would not want to stay anywhere else.

Hopefully the owners will heed the feedback of customers and invest in updating the rooms and maybe the restaurant and it can return to it's former glory as Ubud can only increase in popularity. It would be a shame to let the hotel deteriorate and equally also to renovate it so much that it lost it's charm. So hopefully the owners can strike a balance.

We will definitely return.......
