“Beautiful setting, beautiful villa and private pool, beautiful food and service!”
Reviewed 22 July 2012

This gorgeous property is set on a very steep river canyon along the banks of the river Ayung. Each "room" is actually a Villa with it's own private pool and secluded privacy wall. You feel like you are transported to paradise, but with white glove service! The check-in is done in your own villa while you enjoy a welcome cocktail! No one expects you to walk the steep property so you call a porter to pick you up in a golf cart for anything! Breakfast and high tea are included and you can have either at your villa or restaurant. Breakfast is served on the highest level of the property near the lobby and overlooks an idyllic view of the rice paddies that are across the river. Lunch and dinner are served along the river at the Swept Away restaurant, also picturesque. The food is amazing. There is a cooking class offered by one of the resort chef's that we took part of that was a major highlight of our stay. They first gave us a tour of the Ubud morning market and then latter we cooked several authentic Balinese dishes which we all ate for lunch, delicious! We traveled with our 18 month old son and the resort erected a safety fence up around the pool just for him! Also they supplied us with a beautiful crib, with Winnie the Pooh bedding that we regretably could not use due to his age, this crib is more for infants not yet pulling to a stand or walking. Instead they supplied us with another bed for him and that worked out great! While the setting is so incredible, I've never stayed in a private villa before, what really made the resort so unforgetable was the service. From the porters that would drive us up and down in the golf carts to the restaurant service staff to the concierge to the management, everyone really made us feel like they were bending over backwards to please and would do so with such a genuine spirit and a smile! Everyone was so accommodating of our son and doted on him the entire time. We loved it so much that our once in a lifetime trip to Bali .... infected us so much that we are returning again in the same year, this time in August!

Room Tip: They are all good! In rooms along the river, you can hear the water splashing near by, you are close...

From the arrival to departure, the staff at The Samaya were wonderful! Attentive, helpful and very very friendly. The location is stunning, with views over Ubud rice paddy fields. The romantic candle lit dinner by the river was very special, a memory that we will always treasure. The food was delicious, great service and they prepared a menu with our names at the top. Also they have a decent selection of wine and champagne to go with the meal.

We chose to have breakfast at the restaurant which overlooks the rice fields. I really recommend the bread and pastries selection they have there (made within the resort). There is plenty of choice and also the afternoon tea (scones especially) is definitely not to be missed. Absolutely delicious!

The pool in the villa is very deep and a good size. I like the way they designed the garden area with a gazebo - Perfect place for just spending a relaxing afternoon. The villa was always quiet and very private. The bathtub is also a jacuzzi which was great!

We can't wait to go back again and will be definitely staying at the Samaya.

We stayed at the Samaya on July 5-8 after a three night stay in Seminyak. We were blown away by the property once we arrived as it really is breathtaking how beautiful the complex and surroundings are. The resort is tiered so check-in is the top most level, with the breakfast restaurant one level below (excellent view of the rice terraces in the distance), and villas all the way down to the Ayung river valley. The gym, spa, and lunch/dinner restaurant is also on the bottom most level.

The hillside villa is beautiful, with a generous sized pool, outdoor cabana, and large indoor living spaces. It is wonderfully adorned with many amenities (the mosquito repelling incense was very much appreciated, while the silky bathrobes felt luxurious). The complimentary breakfast was excellent, with a lot of, albeit Western, options. We chose to have the breakfast in the restaurant every morning to enjoy the view, though it seemed a lot of other patrons decided to have it in their villa. The complimentary afternoon tea was also delicious, and came with a sampling of tasty pastries to have with your tea. We enjoyed meals from the on-site restaurant and enjoyed everything we had. Overall, we were thrilled with our dining options.

We did not try the free shuttle to Ubud center since we had hired a driver to show us around, but the resort provided pick-up as well, which is something that is much appreciated considering the resort is on the outskirts of Ubud. What we did take advantage of was the free buggy pick-up to take us up to the restaurant or back to the villa, since the resort is built pretty steeply.

Some nits that I found could be improved was that the for-pay movie selection is quite poor, with the one movie we actually picked (The Time Traveler's Wife) malfunctioning about 1/3 the way through the movie. Also, the service was sometimes spotty. Considering the relative small number of villas, the buggy service sometimes took long (20+ minutes), the private butler service line took 25 rings before someone picked up, and the dvd delivery took about 30 min (we were told it would be 10 min). Another tip is that the roads throughout the resort is shared, public space. We overheard crowds of locals loudly walking through the resort while we were laying outside in our gazebo area (view is obscured by trees and plants but not the sound).

Advice I would give is to get a villa near the top, since that would provide easiest access to the restaurant and to leave the resort.

Are you headed to Bali...then there is only ONE company to stay with – Samaya Bali. They have a resort in Ubud, in the jungle, nestled on the banks of the Ayung River that will take your breath away. We arrived and were greeted like royalty...and they treated us like that the rest of our stay. Our butler was Joe - she is AMAZING! Our every need was cared for - she even worked with Mrs. Ningsah in the management office to order in the only microbrew in all of Bali (Storm Brewing) for our villa. The villa was like a piece of paradise with our own private infinity pool. The pics barely do it justice.

For the final night, I asked the hotel manager (Wayan - what a guy!) to put together an unforgettable dinner for my wife and I. Talk about going above and beyond…
Our butler came to get us just before sunset and walked us down to the banks of the river where we sat on a couch at the water's edge, surrounded by 100 lanterns in and around the water, and were served cocktails and amuse bouche while the sun set. Then we were guided up the hill to a small grass plateau overlooking the river - with hundreds more candles and lanterns - to a table decorated with a Balinese-lovers statue that was hand-selected and painted for us...and were served a 6-course gourmet (I'm talking Waygu beef here!!!) tasting menu paired with wine and cocktails. When we returned to our room, our jacuzzi tub was filled with flower petals, there were chocolate-covered strawberries and sparkling wine...it was like a dream.

Next time we go to Bali - this is where we'll spend the first few days unwinding. Then we'll head the the Samaya in Seminyak on the beach front for fun in the sand. Rates start at $400US/night - and the experience is really beyond words.

I've done my best to describe The Samaya...but I promise I haven't done it justice. This is the finest place we've ever stayed. I still carry a $50k rupiah note in my wallet...counting down the days till we return to Bali...where we will stay at the Samaya...they have a piece of our heart there.

Room Tip: 16 villas to choose from, 1-3 bedrooms, private pools. Definitely stay for as many nights as you c...

The Samaya, Ubud is a hidden paradise in tranquil settings and our three-night stay was the perfect start to our honeymoon.
Located in the hills, about a 20-minute drive from the centre of ubud, the hotel offers stunning views of the rice fields. The accommodation and grounds are beautiful and offer total relaxation and serenity - after a gruelling 26-hour journey from the UK I couldn't have asked for more. I was so impressed with our villa on arrival that I mistakenly thought we had been given an upgrade!
The spa, which overlooks the Ayung River, is the best I have visited and the treatments are excellent and totally relaxing. Also highly recommended is the afternoon tea, which is served at Swept Away, the restaurant next to the river.
The lovely team at The Samaya helped make sure we enjoyed a first-class break and were always on hand to accommodate in any way they could.
Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer here!
