We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Kayu Sugih with it's traditional Bali surroundings and wonderful service.
We would certainly like to stay there again.

Kayu Sugih is hidden away only a few mins walk from the beach in Sanur. Off the main street and down the well manicured bamboo laneway is the welcoming 'Guest House' of Kayu Sugih. That's exactly what it is - 'welcoming'. Agung & his family go out of their way to make you feel welcome and comfortable. Our room was absolutely beautiful and immaculately clean with a sitting room for added comfort. Each morning breakfast was served almost immediately after you sat down in the peaceful dining area. Agung, his wife and family are always happy and waiting to help with anything you need. Coffee and Tea brought to you anytime of day upon request. Kayu Sugih is only a few mins from the beach. It's just a matter of crossing the road and through an open walking path to the Bonsai Cafe where there is a walk way directly onto the beach. There is no pool yet, at Kayu Sugih but Agung has arranged with the Hotel a few doors away for his guests to use their pool & facilities. Sanur is unlike any other part of Bali we have been too It boasts a quality all of it's own. The beautiful beach aligned with palm trees and open restaurants goes on for endless miles. The atmosphere in Sanur at night is charming with several bands playing at the different restaurants. There are also many good restaurants on the beach that do the same so it's just awesome humming along to music while you enjoy dinner. 'Kayu Sugih' was also excellent value for money. Transport from the Guest House to the Airport was at no charge. Thank you, Agung and family for looking after us so very well. We will always remember you and our most excellent & relaxing stay at Kayu Sugih and we shall definitely be back to stay with you again in beautiful Sanur. Really great place to stay. Best wishes, Paulette and Ray.

Kayu Sugih was in a great location.....down a beautiful bamboo-lines entry drive just off the main tourist road in Sanur. It was not on the beach, but there was very easy access once you find the cut-throughs to the beach. We walked through the Bonsai Cafe access and enjoyed the added feature of viewing an amazingly huge collection of very old bonsai trees behind the cafe. The hotel is in walking distance to many shops, internet cafes (no computer available at the hotel), and restaurants. We had reserved a room with a fan, but in our three week trip around the island we found it difficult to sleep at night in the heat without airconditioning (which is unusual for us, we nornally avoid aircon). Fortunately they had an aircon room available, which also turned out to be a much larger room with a sitting area for relaxing and staging luggage. Everything was very clean and the garden setting was beautiful. Our host and the staff (his relatives) were very pleasant. Breakfast was good. There is no pool but our host made arrangement for us to use the pool at another hotel that was close by. We really enjoyed swimming and relaxing during the intensive heat of the afternoon. We hired a driver to tour us around for a day (think it was our host's cousin). After our three night stay, we were transported back to the airport by the same driver for no charge. This was a great place to stay!

Room Tip: The airconditioned rooms are much larger and it was so hot that the aircon was necessary for a good...

Although this property is not on the beach, don't hesitate to book here. It is a short walk to the beach an village and very central. The rooms are beautiful and all the rooms have a porch and walk out into the serene garden. The breakfasts are served here and is something to look forward to. The hosts and staff are very helpful and extremely friendly. We were picked up at the airport by Agung and he was waiting for us for a while, but we were welcomed with a smile.

Room Tip: We had a room with AC since it was August, we were glad we had it.

We arrived on New year’s eve for 3nights. I booked KS based on its pole positon on Trip advisor,to the exclusion of a swimming pool!...and i love to swim!

The Reservation...
----------------------
The booking process and subsequent email correspondence with Agung was prompt and seamless. We were only offered the AC suite(Room2) at the time of booking, which was 80usd inc variable daily breakfast, which i thought was quite expensive for a 'guest house' with no pool but it was New years eve afterall and it was also SUITE!....(more on that later) We did get a free airport pick for staying 3 nights.

5* Reviews
---------------
I have to say i was quite excited to stay here as the reviews were all 5* and in hindsight i shouldn’t have been so naive because I subsequently learned some bad press about KS prior to travelling, known to the TA community, that in the past friends of KS management had been asked to write exceptional reviews,(all 5*) naturally to keep them at the number 1 slot. I believe this to have been previous management(?). So i would like to offer you my honest and thorough account of how i found KS.

Kayu Sugih a peaceful haven...
--------------------------------------
The 5 rooms are set around a lovely tranquil garden with a focal point of a charming traditional balinese style building where breakfast is served. ...
I have to tell you that as we slept in late on new years day after the long flight from the Uk , it was 2.30pm when we rose & i was certain we had missed breakfast! I opened the door to our room and in seconds one of the staff members, Carla popped out from around the corner....with a big smile on her face and asked would we like breakfast?! I was really impressed with this given the late hour!
So we had a nice breakfast of eggs, toast, fruit, tea and a lovely smoothie and listened to the birds chirp happily(the garden is truly a delight and has a lovely feel to it, not to mention the wonderful smell of Frangipani!) and the gentle patter of the rain!......we read our books and breakfast merged delightfully into afternoon tea! (they offer this daily every afternoon as no tea&Coffee facs are provided in the room.)

Define a SUITE?..
---------------------
My opinion was begining to soften by this time as to be honest i was a little disappointed with our so called 'suite'.. Lets just say, it wasn't what i expected of a suite.
It also should be noted that KS have a 'blog' site and not a website & there are limited photos which do not give you a clear idea of the room you are booking.

The 'suite' in reality was a just small bedroom with no windows and a smaller room in front of the bedroom with a ceiling fan separated by a door that you could push open easily, even when the sliding lock was pulled across. It was probably meant as a living area but offering no real 'comfort', with just a couple of ‘benches' and a coffee table. There was also a fridge, which was really useful .
The space was a bit of a ''waste of space '' to be honest and we didn’t use it at all. Suite number 2 ,unfortunately, didn’t have the lovely front terrace with chairs the other suite and standard fan rooms had and from the outside they looked more inviting and gave you the option to sit and read in the lovely garden.( you can see this from the various pictures on TA) I also understand the bedroom area is bigger in the standard fan rooms too. There were some Japanese ladies who seemed to spend quite a bit of time on their terrace, where they took their afternoon tea & it really did look like a nice space ( NB they would have paid less than us (?)

If i can offer one other positive out of room2, that might suite any light sleepers out there, is due to the window less bedroom being at the back and closed off from the little room up front, is it can act like a cocoon and may be one of the reasons it was so quiet and we didnt hear a sound hence we slept till 2.30pm in the afternoon on the first day!

Despite the issue with the 'said' SUITE - some incidentals to note....
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
'Everywhere' was spotlessy clean.. and the staff were lovely.

The bed and pillows were sooo comfy and we had great sleeps, the room was a bit clinical and lacked a homely feeling so a couple of balinese pictures for the wall would work a treat!

You had to be a 7 foot tall basket ball player to reach to hang your clothes – i thought this was quite funny since the Balinese are so tiny..fortunately, i had a six footer at hand to hang my dresses ;- ) The bulilt in wardrobe was for some reason set really high on top of the drawers.

The shower, toilet and sink area although very small, were adequate, and the shower had plenty of hot water with good pressure. There is no door and just a shower curtain acting as a partition.
There was no safety deposit box, just a lockable drawer in the wardrobe. But if you had any concerns about that i think Agung has a place to store for you in the reception area.

Great location in mid north Sanur opposite Besakih hotel and next door to Ducks Nutz down a lovely bamboo paved long entrace which leads to Ks and the luxurious 'Pavillions' property who i think probably provide the security.Ten mins max stroll to the Beach.

So all in all a peaceful and pleasant stay...3 nights were enough in the absence of a pool. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend though - it really just depends what your key criteria is.

I found Sanur accomodation to be expensive when i consider the standard&facilities and price we paid around the rest of Bali.

On a final note........
------------------------
If agung could make improvements in the future and im sure its already on his wish list, would be to lose his carport near the entrance and build a small swimming pool.... oh & re evaluate suite 2 in line with the other rooms....in the spirit of fairness and value for money.

Room Tip: Try to avoid room 2
