Reviewed 5 February 2011

Booked into this hotel in the penthouse, had to manage suitcases upstairs to fourth floor. Room was ok but showing its age. Building site was our view from the balcony, worked all hours and in the morning the cement mixers started and non stop banging. I think if you were on ground level and in the rooms to the left of reception it would be fine but still pretty basic. Moved hotels after one night and went to its sister hotel The Kumala Pantai which was trice the price but 10 times better.

We stayed for 3 nights in deluxe room. I booked this hotel by email. They were good at taking reservation by email and their response was pretty fast.

Kumala hotel is a kinds of budget hotel however they have lovely garden and renovated clean bathroom. Our room was not so specious, however this is a good option for budget travelers. Beach is walking distance, nice day spa nearby, tons of shops and restaurant in neighborhood. I will stay Kumala again if there is change to come back to Bali.

First of all this review is for the Kumala Hotel/Grand Kumala, NOT Kumala Panti and I found it frustrating when researching this property that many reviews and pics for the two very different properties were mixed together on a lot of websites.

This was mine and hubby's 3rd trip to Bali since September and so we were very aware of our budget this trip.

Location of the property is pretty good, positioned very close to Double 6 to the left and right to Kumala Panti and Jayakarta. Lots of restaurants and shops within a very easy walking distance. (Although to be honest I did miss staying beachfront).

Nice gardens and well looked after.

Two pools, both of which I would have liked to drain and give the tiles a scrub but the water in both seemed clean and we swam every day.

We had a deluxe room and it was very big, fantastic huge bed, safe, large wardrobe, aircon, fan, TV. No hint of that musty Bali smell sometimes found in rooms.

A large bathroom, big vanity with lots of room to put all of your toiletries, huge shower, but no bath (not that bothered me at all.) Cleanliness of the bathroom was not a problem, I would probably rate it about the same as the standard at Puri Raja or Jayakarta as an indication.

We also had a large balcony, all the balconies are shared so you have to walk along them all to get to yours if you are at the end but we were only in a block of two so it was fine.

Breakfast is near the pool at the back of the hotel, it was toast, fruit, always an Indonesian dish, tea coffee, juice and an egg station. It was ok, nothing flash but for the price of the accommodation it was fine.

Staff are not overly friendly or helpful, not that they are rude its just that they are just doing their jobs although after a few days there were a few more smiles from staff. Also its the only place I have ever stayed where you see the staff laying on the lounge in the communal TV room relaxing and having a smoke!

We stayed there over the crossover from high to low season and our price per night averaged $48 aud, for that price we thought the Kumala Hotel offered fantastic value for money.

We would certainly stay there again if looking for accommodation in that price range, and it would have been cheaper if not for high season, also the fact that we had a deluxe room added to the cost, still we felt it was excellent value for money.

There were no big problems and we had a very pleasant stay.

We did not look into any of the other room types, standard or superior.

Also we brought a cheap plastic kettle and some cups and coffee tea etc as this is not supplied.

There was a large range of people staying there from older couples to young couples, a few families with teens, a few groups of couples and lots of Europeans of all ages. Also there were a few older ladies staying there on their own. It was very quiet of a night which was nice.

Also free wifi around the front pool and in the Lobby.

I was not expecting anything too much and I was pleasantly surprised, it certainly isnt anything flash but it was more than ok for what we wanted to spend.

They have a number of rooms. I stayed in the cheapest room (300.000 IDR/30USD during high season), no tv, no fridge. The other rooms have these and look also a bit nicer.

The room was ok, basic but spacious. OUtside there's a little veranda with two chairs and view at one of the two small swimming pools. The aircon in the room worked fine and the shower was very nice. The provide towels but you should bring your own shampoo and conditioner.

The beds were comfortable but the bedsheets have been in use for a while so though clean they are some small stains on it. The cleaners could do a bit of a better cheap when they are cleaning the floor and in the corners of the room.

Breakfast is included. Buffet style with eggs, bread (toaster), jam and nasi goreng. The tea is ok but the coffee was 3 out of 5 days absolutely horrible. Dunno what made it good the other two days. The breakfast is at the second pool and a nice place to have breakfast.
The place has free wifi (fast connection) and kinda of a living place. The swimming pool is clean and you can sunbath around the pool cause the pool has sun from 8am till 4pm.

The service was good. Around the hotel are few restaurants and the beach is around 4-5min away. Also closeby you have the nightclub double six.

My wife and I had planned to stay at the Hotel for 10 days last month. We’ve stayed at the Hotel several times before and found the Hotel to be quiet, relaxing and great value for money. The last two times we stayed there (1998 and 2002) we stayed in rooms facing the pool at the back of the hotel. I requested one of these rooms when I made my reservation over email. I got prompt a response back saying the room we requested had been booked. When we arrived we found that our room was not at the back of the hotel – not so much an issue. But the room they had reserved for us had an overpowering smell of damp. We spoke with the lady in reception and explained the situation – in broken English we managed to work out that they would give us a room for a few days (at a higher price) at the back of the hotel and try and find us another room. We ended up getting a room at the back of the hotel which we originally wanted but it had two single beds when we wanted a double/queen/king. Later that day when we back to reception and spoke to someone else they told us the room they had moved us to was booked in a few days time. Only option was to take the damp room or upgrade to one of the suites – 3 times the price!

So what was supposed to be the start of relaxing holiday turned into a pain in the neck trying to find another hotel to move to. Luckily the hotel has free wifi and I had my laptop – thanks to tripadvisor we found a nice hotel in Seminyak – Mutiara Bali 

Another gripe was that we planned to go Java for a few days and asked the hotel staff if we could store a bag at the hotel while we went away of a few days. The hotel staff told us they didn’t have any room – which meant we had to store the bag at the airport. Although I should point out that the staff knew that we were intending to go to another hotel – I guess quality of service drops when you’re intending on changing hotels.

Our understanding is that the hotel was rebuilt after a fire about 14 years ago so when we stayed the previous two times the hotel was relatively new. What we found this time was a fair bit of wear and tear – shower curtain rail coming off’s it’s hinges, chipped paint, mold on the shower curtain and bathroom door – the stonework on the waterfall in the pool had mold growing on it. It’s a shame that they haven’t maintained the condition of the hotel.

So read this review and make of it what you will. We wont be staying at Kumala again.
