I did a lot of reading prior planning the trip, however none of the websites mentioned about the rip off one can encounter when you reach Govindghat. We parked our car at the parking lot and hired a jeep to take us up to the place where one starts the trek. The parking lot attendant asked us if we would like a pony to carry our luggage while we did the trek. We later found that we could get a pony for 700 Rupees while he charged us 1600 rupees.
Once the jeep drops you off, one has to pass rows and rows of ponies , the place reeks of urine and there is pony dung all over the place, it’s actually nauseating.
If you are going to do the trek up to ghangria on foot be prepared to endure the nightmare.
I would think that it would be sensible to have an area where the ponies are kept And the they can be brought as and when required by people rather than have them on the route.
The local government should certainly look into this.
There are people hired to clean the route but they harass you for money rather than do the cleaning. Even at Ghangria one has to deal with pony dung all over the place.
Thankfully on the trek from ghangria to valley of flowers this nightmare is avoided.
