If you like ancient ruins, then this is the place to go, go early in the day, before the coaches, very atmospheric, monks chanting and lots of flaura and fauna, flowers, chipmonks, birds and buttlerflies. The Olympus of Varanase.

“Worth a visit after the Ganga”
Reviewed 13 April 2012

Sarnath is an interesting archelogical site. It is the place where Buddha preached his first sermon after attaining enlightenment and becomming a buddha.

Ashoka, a great emperor, built stupas and monasteries on this site which are now in ruins. Artefacts from these buildings are in a museum on the site and are worth a visit.

At Sarnath there is the famous Ashoka pillar of polished sandstone whole lion capital has been adoped by the Rupublic of India as its State emblem.

“clean and calm”
Reviewed 13 April 2012

A nice haven of peacefulness with greenery. Despite busloads of tourists Sarnath was very pleasant and peaceful. Unlike many of the temples Sarnath had a spiritual feel.

“Quite a revelation when you see this”
Reviewed 12 April 2012

I had always assumed that Buddhism started further East than India having been to many Buddhist temples in the Far East. So, to arrive at the place where Buddha gave his first ever sermon was quite a revelation. To think that here, in one city, we get to see the place where every Hindhu wishes to die and be cremated as their most holy place then see where another great religion commenced is quite extraordinary and interesting.
The museum, grounds and monuments are very worth a visit.

“Peaceful and spiritual”
Reviewed 10 April 2012

This is an amazing place and our guide happened to be extremely knowledgeable in the museum so that a large crowd came to listen. It was wonderful to see all the Tibetan Buddhists walking round the stupa and a great way to spend Christmas Day
