Not for the faint~hearted! Be prepared to step on messy/muddy grounds in long queues, even though you may have a confirmed ticket. The energies inside is amazing. Also be prepared to push and shove your way through to make your offerings. It's advisable to go with a local or other company. It can be overwhelming otherwise. All in all a once~in~a~lifetime experience. Not suitable for kids.

How to reach:- Varanasi is a renound railway station near Mughalsarai. Varanasi has an airport also some 30 Km away from the main city. From the station take an auto (5 Km) for Godaulia which again is 1 Km from the temple.

Where to stay:- There are many guest houses in Varanshi near the “Godaulia” and also near the temple and also at the banks of the river Ganga, some eminent is Jaipuria at Godaulia.

How to do Darshan:-
Prohibited:- Leather belt, Camera, Mobile, Any tobacco Pan Cigarrate, Gutkha etc, any key with remote are strictly not allowed. Every part of your pocket will at least be searched thrice so there is no chance of carrying these. Security is even tighter than is at the airport, and is not like the other Jyotirlings.

The temple opens at 4 o clock in the morning and you can do the darshan and can touch and jalavishek the Shiv ling. There is no dress Code for anyone .Its not much crowded except on Mondays and Shrawan in July & August. However jalavishek is not allowed after the evening hours once the Shringar arti is done by the temple. The distance to the the temple from the river is 1 Km so must watch the Ganga arti in the evening at Dashaswamedh ghat.
The river gets very deep suddenly at the steps and many people have drowned so far while taking the bath so avoid getting down in the river after the first two steps, if you don’t know swimming.
After the darshan of Baba Viswanath one must go to the Kalvaurav temple which again is 1.5 Km from the Viswanath temple, otherwise it is said that you will be deprived of the boon of visiting Baba Viswanath. Other eminent place to visit nearby is the BHU Mandir 6 Km which is just few fts lower than the Qutub Minar as is said., Sankat Mochan 3.5 Km, Durga Mandir 3 Km all in the same way except the Kalvairav Mandir, which is on the other side.
There is no queue in the evening but at that time you may not be allowed to touch the Shivling.

Definitely it draws the attention being one of the oldest temple, also now and then destroyed and rebuilt.

There must be so much History around this temple. So many people come to visit this temple. I would wish if this temple could be re-architected and maintained in much more grandeur way that it deserves.
Also I hope some day: there is a regularization of "Parsad Sellers" and "Darshan Seller Pande(s)".

Thank Rohit S

Kashi Vishwanath Temple is dedicated to the chief deity of city of Varanasi, Kashi Vishwanath. One of the incarnations of Lord Shiva, the temple was originally dedicated to Vishwanath Jyotirlinga, which is present within the temple premises. The Vishwanath Jyotirlinga at Varanasi is among the twelve Jyotirlingas of India having high religious significance.

The present shape of the temple was constructed by Late Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar, princess of Indore, in 1780. A Naubatkhana was built in front of the temple by Collector Mohammad Ibrahim Khan in 1785. The two beautiful domes of the temple were covered with gold donated by Punjab Kesari Maharaja Ranjeet Singh in 1839. However, at present, the third dome is uncovered and government authorities of Uttar Pradesh have shown keen interest for gold plating of the third dome of temple.

Overlooking the whole city of Kashi, the temple is located on the banks of holy river Ganges. A view of burning Vishwanath Jyotirlinga is considered to be the most sacred event by the natives of the destination. The temple was visited by many great saints including Ramkrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekanand, Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, Goswami Tulsidas, Adi Shankaracharya and Gurunanak Dev.
