“Experience the Ganges”
Reviewed 3 July 2012

You find yourself right on the Ganges here and you can choose to walk along it or sit and watch life
unfold from the terrace. Varanassi is an amazing place - and not for the feint hearted - which makes this havelli a nice place to rest. The food was very expensive I found but the rooms were clean and the staff very helpful - delightful in fact. This seemed like quite a new property and in time will be more comfortable with itself. Do not miss the evening boat trip it is special.

I was looking for very good place on the Ghats , and was pleasantly surprised with this boutique one albeit they were undergoing some small maintenance when we went there.
Pros:
• Very Clean (Rooms and Bathroom)
• River Facing
• Fast & Good Service
• Got their Own boat (so can use it any time)
• Boat Pickup facility from Assi Ghat – Vehicles can reach this place – so no need to pass sometimes dirty bylanes.
• Vegetarian
Cons:
• Relatively Small (<15 Rooms) – Sometimes very helpful too
• Relatively Expensive
• Limited kitchen

I travelled with one friend for one weekend night in Varanasi, and we stayed at the Suryauday Haveli on the basis of the fantastic reviews on this site.
This hotel has many things going for it: its location just outside of the old town is ideal, walking distance from all the sights, but not too close to the action. It is spotlessly clean, and the rooms are nicely decorated. The shower works great, with tons of hot water and plenty of water pressure. The cherry on top is the complimentary evening boat trip at 6pm, with a guide showing you all the main sites from the river at sunset, including the evening fire ceremony.
There were two downside: first, we were awoken early in the morning (around 3 or 4 am) by lots of noise just outside the hotel, mainly street dogs barking and the call to prayer by the local mosque. Second, staff, although very friendly and polite, were also pretty unhelpful on several occasions. For example: Taxis cannot access the hotel, and one has to spend 5 minutes walking through narrow streets to get there. So we called them when the taxi could not get any further, and they told us not to move because they would come pick us up. It took one hour for the staff to come and get us. We were not happy when we found out that we had been waiting all this time 5 minutes away from the hotel. Also, we had booked the morning boat trip and were told to show up at 4.45am. In fact the other passengers had been told 5am, and did not show up until 5.15 am anyway (along with the boat man). I would have welcomed those additional minutes of sleep, had I known. When it was time to pay the bill, it turned out that the quoted price was without taxes. Not a huge amount but annoying - if I am told that the price is Rs 600, I don't expect to have to pay Rs 675. Finally, when we asked them to book us a taxi back to the airport they quoted a ridiculous price, saying that due to the elections prices were very high and we would not be able to find a taxi outside. In fact we found taxi outside immediately, which cost us 4 times less than the hotel price.
In summary, a nice hotel, but be prepared to be awaken at dawn, and take everything the staff says with a pinch of salt.

Room Tip: We requested (and obtained) a big window room, which had a nice view and costs the same as the rooms...

Varanasi is one of the most awesome places we ever met. Just sit down on the roof terrace of the Suryauday Haveli and let the whole "scenario" influence on yourself...We had the nice corner room on the ground floor. The service was very friendly and the food was very good. It is a special place! Go and see by yourself & "enjoy" Varanasi.

My friend and I traveled for a month throughout India. After arriving from the USA to Delhi for only one night, we flew straight to Varanasi. All I can say is "Wow" - we had no clue what to expect. Varanasi is a combination of both chaos and intrigue. It really "gets" you. You're either going to love it or despise it.

My traveling partner and I both agree that in looking back on our trip, Varanasi was our favorite & most interesting place to visit. We stayed here at Suryauday Haveli -which is an oasis in a very very hectic place. Attached are pictures of the outside, the charming inside courtyard, our room, and views from the water.

We hired guides through Delhi Magic (search for Delhi Magic run by Deepa here on Tripadvisor). We were two women friends traveling together in India and she arranged a FANTASTIC guide for us named J.P. Mishra. He was a great guide that went beyond our highest expectations and really brought Indias history and culture to life for us. It really helped us in the remaining weeks of our trip to better understand India.

This hotel was a sanctuary. The food was great and delicous. We did not get sick. The rooms were clean and bed were comfortable. The staff went out of their way to be helpful. This is definitely the place you want to stay. No question about it. It is a safe and guarded fortress in a very stressful, crowded & dirty city.

I can't say enough nice things about the great time we had here. The management and all staff seemed genuine and wonderful. I give it 5 stars for the value you get here (compared to other hotels in Varanasi). This is not a 5 star property -but the service is excellent and it is very clean - and the food is very good. It was slightly pricey (as are many of the hotels in India, suprisingly). But once you get to Varanasi, you'll be glad you paid a bit extra to be here. Also, the musicians performing at night in the courtyard is very atmospheric and nice.

Room Tip: cars can not travel all the way up to the front of the hotel due to streets getting super narrow. S...
