Description: Brown Bread Bakery and Organic Food P.Ltd is the very first organic bakery with restaurant in India with branches in Varanasi and Delhi. Since 2015 we started also a Vegan restaurant Varanasi. The company supports the projects of Learn for Life by using the profits for funding the school and to provide fair working conditions for all the staff. We use as many organic ingredients as possible for our products. All our bakery items are made from different kinds of organic grains which are always grinded freshly. The grains, the rice and the lentils are produced by certified small farmers which we visit and check regularly.

“Fresh food but smelt badly in the restaurant..”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2012

This restaurant is doing good things for the Indian people who are disadvantaged. The bread & cheese were nice & fresh. The staff were polite. Quite a few things unavailable on the menu however.
The restaurant is upstairs. I went during the day, & the toilet is in the restaurant-it smelt horrible!!! The whole place stunk of urine the entire time. Such a shame. They could've lit some incense maybe?! Also not much natural light.
Would consider returning again, purely for the fresh healthy bread varieties!

“Avoiding Confusion”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2012

There is a lot of confusion surrounding the brown bread bakery, and this is because there are two legitimate brown bread bakery stores as well as some other restaurants who are just cashing in on the well known name.

Both the the real brown bread bakery stores have the same menu. However, in my experience in both stores, very little that was offered on the menu was actually available.

The menu was also a little expensive and quoted without the taxes added, which if you not careful will surprise you when you receive your bill.

The one store is significantly cleaner than the other. This store has a nice rooftop, but is caged in to stop the monkeys from disturbing you, which ruins the view a little. The service was average for India, as was the quality of the food. Still it was a pleasant experience.

The second store was much worse, it was very dirty with dust covered drinks served. We saw numerous rats running across the floor, in the kitchen and even on the cushion seats which we were sitting on. When we told the waiter this he laughed and said its ok- The service was also really bad.

The redeeming factor for both restaurants was good quality free wifi.

We moved to a new location which is opposite of the old location mentioned in Lonely Planet. There is only one Brown Bread Bakery Restaurant in Varanasi (at Tulsi Ghat on Shivala Road we run a small organic shop), the other one is in New Delhi Pahar Ganj. Just check out the sign board shown on Trip Advisor.
We had to cover the rooftop with a cage because the monkeys attacked the customers. We are sorry for the confusion about all the other restaurants popping up in Varanasi misusing our name. Also the restaurant in the old location has nothing to do with us, they just kept the name and the menu when we moved out!

I went here after reading the reviews I was going to eat but the place was literally crawling with flies so I had a quick coffee and left.

The gardener brought some compost fertilizer because i told him not to put any chemicals. This attracted lots of flies! We now covered it with another layer of fresh soil which keeps the flies away.
We are sorry for the disturbance. If you don t like to sit on the roof you can choose one of the 2 floors downstairs.
Thank you for your visit

“I don't understand these reviews”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2012

This review is for the real Brown Bread Bakery, not the 'impostor'.

This restaurant is extremely hard to find - while there are a million signs along the ghats directing you to it, they're hard to follow and you'll eventually have to ask someone for directions. It's far away from the ghats, and you have to fight your way through tiny side streets to locate the restaurant. Then after you finally find it, you have to walk up 5+ stories to reach the rooftop seating. Along the way, you'll see the kitchen which looks extremely dirty / unsanitary. Then when you reach the top, you'll find little seating, a dirty low-hanging net/screen above your head which ruins the atmosphere (but which I'm guessing keeps the pigeons out), and hundreds of little flying bugs swarming around.

In terms of location and atmosphere, Lotus Lounge is 1000x better.

“Better than most”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 March 2012

If I was back in England this would probably only get an average but here in Varanasi it surpasses the other places we've tried for having fresh food & friendly staff. Plus a lovely rooftop that is a welcome escape. The only downside is its a little pricey compared to others but I would recommend you try this place for sure.
