This was my second stay here and I didn't really enjoy it at all this time. Firstly, be careful of room rates - there's not really a set fee and they are big on commissions to touts. You can really bargain your room down - in fact, if guests all told each other how much they were paying for their rooms, they might be quite shocked at the different tariffs for similar rooms. Secondly, the place is getting more and more run down as maintenance doesn't seem to be in their vocabulary. Rooms are grotty with beds that are very uncomfortable, no sheets (as is the case with budget places) and the bathroom reflects the budget nature of the establishment. Food at the rooftop restaurant is good if you order standards like Dahl or Palak Paneer (excellent) but don't get adventurous or you might find the food inedible. Don't ask for any help or you will pay big commissions and avoid any "free" tour to show you where the ghats are. The pros: people running the place and working there are friendly enough as long as you sneak around organising your own onward travel, sight-seeing etc. We got bad looks each time we went across the back lane to the lovely little hindu restaurant which is very clean, with very honest and polite staff and excellent food at much cheaper prices than this hotel. We only stayed two nights and and were very happy to get away. Perhaps I am being harsh because I am over staying in these holes. However, I did look around at other budget accommodation in Varanassi just out of interest and I think much better is available.
