This was my second stay here and I didn't really enjoy it at all this time. Firstly, be careful of room rates - there's not really a set fee and they are big on commissions to touts. You can really bargain your room down - in fact, if guests all told each other how much they were paying for their rooms, they might be quite shocked at the different tariffs for similar rooms. Secondly, the place is getting more and more run down as maintenance doesn't seem to be in their vocabulary. Rooms are grotty with beds that are very uncomfortable, no sheets (as is the case with budget places) and the bathroom reflects the budget nature of the establishment. Food at the rooftop restaurant is good if you order standards like Dahl or Palak Paneer (excellent) but don't get adventurous or you might find the food inedible. Don't ask for any help or you will pay big commissions and avoid any "free" tour to show you where the ghats are. The pros: people running the place and working there are friendly enough as long as you sneak around organising your own onward travel, sight-seeing etc. We got bad looks each time we went across the back lane to the lovely little hindu restaurant which is very clean, with very honest and polite staff and excellent food at much cheaper prices than this hotel. We only stayed two nights and and were very happy to get away. Perhaps I am being harsh because I am over staying in these holes. However, I did look around at other budget accommodation in Varanassi just out of interest and I think much better is available.

This guesthouse is situed near the most southern ghat, good location. People here are less agressiv to tourists. The restaurant on the top is great, really good food and friendly service.
The rooms are unfortunatly not as good as the food, only functional (a bed a chair a bathroom but hot water) and not really cosy.
The biggest problem here is that the staff is always trying to "help" you with advices and guided visit/boat tours/concerts and what ever but it is important to know that they take commission for every service they will give you. Seems not be intressted to give "free" advices.
So, carefull!

We booked this place when we where in Agra via a guy who booked flights for us, it sounded ok. But after the long journey to Varanasi and getting to the hotel we were not very happy with it. We had to go up about 4 flights of stairs, tiring and no-one offered to help with the bags. The room was very hot and the AC not working as the power was out, yes I know that cant be helped and the AC came on later but basically we were never going to spend more than 1 night here. Strangley though the rooftop restaurant was great.

They claim to have a view of the Ganges but its not really visible except on the very top roof. But the view thing is weird in Varanasi, the whole town is on one side of the river, including the Ghats so a veiw of the river isnt much good, unless you are right on the river and can look down at it.

Anyway we stayed the night had a rubbish sleep on the hard bed and got out of there to a 4 star hotel the next day. I think we were sort of done with cheap backpacker places at that point so the Sandhya was always going to get short shrift from us.......if only the AC had be working it might have been different.

or, like you wrote, if there were no power cut it may give you different feeling.
we feel very sorry.

our hotel face to main road of old city.you can see the view of the Ganges River from roof.
anyway after 1 night stay you siffted to big hotel,if then you got good facility there and enjoyd varanasi stayment it also our wishes.

I arrived in this hotel because the owner have many friends in other hotels and they organise your trip "free" as they tell. But it'is false, they take comission on that ! Almost, they have an army of rickshaw and gides who follow you to show youthe gathn but with a stop in silk factory.
I was travelling with "routard guide french book" and all they said was false. Prices at the restorant are minimum 50 roupies, they don't have internet, but there is one in the same entrance, and they have rooms without bathroom.
I try to use their service to by train ticket, and they forget to by it. I was supposed to wait 1hours more after check out to have it because they don't want to give me money back...

So don't go to this hotel, there is a lot of other's one in Benares !

Sandyha is hidden down a back street near Shivala Ghat in Varanasi. It's easy to find off the main street, just walk down and look for the mint-green balconies above the shops.

We found this place through a rickshaw driver taking us here against our wishes which happens a lot in India. When we arrived the owners came out and told us to look around, we were at first reluctant but then they said the price: 200rs a night. We had to have a look at this price and were pleasantly surprised: the rooms are large, basic, clean, have a fan, private bathroom and balcony. For 200 rs this place was a miracle, we've paid double for half as much in more trendy 'Lonely Planet' places (this place isn't in the book hence the un-inflated prices).

The rooms also have a nice new bright pink paint job which makes them feel a lot cosier and cleaner than the usual grimy cream you encounter everywhere else.

The owners here are 2 great guys who are very relaxed and laid back about everything and can offer useful hints on where to go and what to do/see in the surrounding areas.

One thing to be aware of though is that this place tries to sell you tours and trips and other thigns. They have their own boatman to take you up and down the ganges- the price is fair at 200rs but you can do better down the ghats if you ask around, some will go as low as 80rs for a 2 hour journey. Also, when i wanted to post something they were going to charge me 150rs for wrapping it- i haggled them down to 70 rs which was a much better price, so it's not in your face, and i suppose it's fair, but it is something to be aware of.

Basically, I don't think you can do better in Varanasi for dbl this money. We looked around the Yogi and the Shiva and they were smaller and not as clean as the Sandyha, and not as pink!

Oh, the restaurant here serves up some of the best food i've had in a guesthouse- it takes a while to appear, but it's worth the wait and the prices are fair. And when we left, the bill was 1,360rs, but he rounded it down to 1,300rs and wished me a good trip with a handshake and a smile. Nice guys all round and definately recommended.
