Hotel Gemini Continental
Ranked #20 of 93 Hotels in Lucknow
Reviewed 28 April 2012

We stayed at Hotel Gemini Continental in Lucknow from April 14th to April 17th and I had to pay 400 USD for the 3 nights which was booked through Agoda. The price included taxes and breakfast. I booked this hotel as it was close to the venue of the wedding my wife and I attended. I travel a bit for work and pleasure and due to this I have been fortunate to stay at great 4 and 5 star hotels around the world and I just want to mention this as it influences the way I review hotels.

The hotel is centrally located in Lucknow, I guess and it took us 45 to 60 minutes to get there from the airport and the taxi cost 400 Rupee (8 USD). Check in was fast and we stayed in room 302 – a luxury room. The hotel is fairly new and it stands out in the surroundings. The room seemed a bit naked upon entry: white painted concrete walls and a wooden floor. A couple of chairs and a small table were located by the huge windows and the view was quite good. Apart from that there was a desk with a chair, a suit hanger, a small fridge with some drinks in it (50 Rupee for a Coke – 1 USD) and a huge 42” TV was on the wall. There were plenty of TV channels to choose from but it was tricky to find the English speaking ones. It was some sort of satellite TV so to get the TV to work, I also had to turn on the decoder box next to the fridge. This was sort of hidden so it made it tricky to change channels. There was also a BOSE CD player but in these days it would make more sense to have a loudspeaker where you could hook up an iPhone or MP3 player.

The bed was huge and quite firm but still good but the pillows were not very comfortable. The aircon seemed to work pretty well and that can be useful as the temperatures can get very high in the summertime. When we were there it got close to 40 degrees Celsius but at least it was a dry heat.

The bathroom was on the small side and it was in a combination of light and dark tiles. There were some amenities but it was not that easy to understand what all of them were. On the wall in the shower there was a dispenser with two liquids in it but they were not labeled in any way so I assume it was shampoo and conditioner. The shower was in a bathtub with a shower curtain. The shower had good water pressure but there didn’t seem to be a lot of hot water left after 6pm.

Breakfast is located on the 7th floor with a great view of the area around the hotel. However, the food itself was not that spectacular – some cereal, a bit of toast and Danish pastry and some local dishes. Even though we were basically the only guests at breakfast most mornings it took forever to get a cup of coffee. There’s an espresso machine near the bar but my wife is convinced the coffee we were served was powdered. There is a laundry and pressing service in the hotel and the service was cheap and impressively pretty fast.

The location of the hotel was great for us as the main purpose was to attend a wedding located right next to the hotel. The hotel has an option to rent a car with a driver for half a day for 1600 Rupee to drive you to the main tourist attractions in Lucknow. There is an additional fee for an actual guide – we just used our iPad for tourist sight listings.

Let us talk about some of the problems with the hotel and room. When I booked the hotel using Agoda it was stated that it included free wifi. When I got to the hotel this was not the case – we had to buy vouchers but when we showed the Agoda page we did get the wifi vouchers without charge from that point onwards. But it was not a very good solution as it included getting a scratch card from reception (they have to note down the card details first), and then typing in a 12 digit username and control number. We had some issues getting connected to start with so patience is also required. I would have preferred to have more lighting in the room – especially a good reading light. There were not enough sockets in the room so it was hard to find a place to charge the phone and laptop. There was supposed to be complimentary water but normally this is placed in one certain place and marked. In this case the placement seemed to be varying (from the desk to inside the fridge) and it was not marked in any way.

Conclusion
I don’t have any experience with other hotels in Lucknow so it is hard to compare this hotel to other hotels. But Gemini Continental is supposed to be the newest and best hotel in Lucknow. The room was totally adequate and for us the location was perfect as we needed easy access to the wedding venue. We also considered the Taj but primarily as it’s the only hotel in Lucknow with a swimming pool, according to our searches.

I decided to stay at the Hotel Gemini on the back of their Trip Advisor ratings and creadentials as 2005's best Lucknow Hotel. It was functionally fine, but did not live up to my expectations. The decor is a little tired and there aren't really any business facilities to speak of - apart from a very slow internet connection for over £10 per day. Colleagues stayed at the cheaper and much more up to scratch Tulip Inn which definitely would get my vote next time.

That said, the staff are warm and friendly, and the roof top restaurant has lovely views across the historic sites of the city.

Room Tip: Ask for a non-smoking room and avoid floor 3 which is just above the function rooms.

I had been to Lucknow for a Days work in Jan 2012. I had to spend a night at some good reasonable hotel. I searched online for hotels in Lucknow & found this to be a good hotel. I checked in quite late @ 21.30 hrs & was quickly guided to my room. The reception formalities just took 2 mins, I quite appreciate that. I was guided to a room on 5th Floor of the Hotel. Nearby area of the hotel is quite Old & don’t expect too much from it. Rooms in hotel are either facing East or West, nothing as such as front facing or Rear side facing. Rooms were large & had good ambience overall. Toilet was full of stuff you would need at the right place with a Bath tub. Food in hotel is very expensive. You may get same stuff outside hotel at a very cheap rate. Do roam around if you get time.

Room Tip: Opt for higher floor rooms

We stayed 2 nights at the Gemini. It's primarily a business hotel, I think - but that means that the rooms have all the key things you'd want or need. The food in the restaurant is great! Staff were helpful, providing maps and directions to places we wanted to visit, and a car for a trip across town in the evening. For those ladies who like that sort of thing, there is a Fabindia shop virtually next door, and the bazaars and restaurants of Hazratanganj very nearby.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Residency rather than the back street!

Gemini Continental is amongst the new hotels in Lucknow. It is very close to the central business district of Hazratganz. Very close to the hotel are Sahara Mall, PVR. There are multiple eating options in hazratganz in case you do not like teh in house restaurant including the famous Moti Mahal. The reason to go to Gemini Continental is lower price point than the closeby Clarks without compromising on the typical 4 star experience.
